Prospect Review: 9-24 to 10-1
October 2, 2005

Last season we covered the Rangers prospects with a monthly recap of their performances, including statistics, notes and comments on their performances.  This year we're going to change the format up a little and provide weekly recaps of the best and worst from the Rangers prospect pool.  This week we start that effort with a look back at the final week of September.

Johan Asplund, Goaltender - Timrå IK (SWE)
STATISTICS: 2GP 0-1-0 42/45 106Mins .933 1.70
After starting the season as backup, Asplund saw time in relief when starter Mika Oksa gave up three goals to Linköpings in the first period.  Asplund gave up just one goal and earned the start against Färjestads.  Unfortunately for Asplund his team couldn't provide any offense and he registered a 3-0 loss (including an empty net goal).

Dane Byers, Forward - Prince Albert Raiders (WHL)
STATISTICS: 1GP 0G 1A 1Pts 0PIM +2
A quiet week for the Raiders with just one game, but Byers registered his third assist of the year and now has a three game point/assist streak.

Marc-Andre Cliché, Forward - Lewiston Maineiacs (QMJHL)
STATISTICS: 3GP 3G 1A 4Pts 11PIM -1
Cliché had his three point scoring streak come to an end Friday, but he had a pretty solid week nonetheless.  In two games against St John's, the Lewiston forward picked up three goals and an assist, and was a second star of the game in the second game, a Maineiacs' 9-2 victory.

Ivan Dornic Forward - Slovan Braitslava (SLK)
STATISTICS: 3GP 0G 0A 0Pts 2PIM +1
After a solid start, Dornic seems to have had trouble putting the points up in recent games.  He was shut out this week in three games.

Brandon Dubinsky, Forward - Portland Winterhawks (WHL)
STATISTICS: 2GP 1G 2A 3Pts 4PIM +1
Dubinsky continues his hot start to the season, extending hit point scoring streak to three games and being selected as the Portland Tribune Winterhawks player of the week for his play in the first week of the season.  Dubinsky is currently tied for 5th in the WHL in points and is tied for the team lead in points with 3 goals and 4 assists.

Brodie Dupont, Defense - Calgary Hitmen (WHL)
STATISTICS: 2GP 1G 1A 2Pts 0PIM +2
The Calgary Hitmen played just two games this past week and Dupont registered points in both, extending his point scoring streak to three games.  Dupont also picked up a third star in last Sunday's 5-1 victory over the Red Deer Rebels.

Philipp Furrer, Defense - SC Bern (SWI)
STATISTICS: 1GP 0G 0A 0Pts 2PIM
Furrer returned to the Bern line-up Saturday after missing a handful of games (not sure why).  He picked up a couple of penalty minutes, but is yet to register a point in the four games he's played in so far this season.

Ilja Gorokhov, Defense - Yaroslavl Lokomotiv (RUS)
STATISTICS: 2GP 0G 0A 0Pts 0PIM +2
Yaroslavl dropped out of first place in the Russian Super League, but Gorokhov did manage a +3 rating in their win over Moscow Dynamo

Bruce Graham, Forward - Hartford Wolf Pack Training Camp
Graham finished the week with around 3 goals and 2 assists in five games (it's hard to tell without boxscores) and was said to been one of the young players to have impressed coach Jim Schoenfeld.

Sven Helfenstein, Forward - ZSC Lions (SWI)
STATISTICS: 3GP 2G 0A 2Pts 0PIM
Helfenstein has been pretty quiet early in the year, but picked up two goals in yesterday's match against
EV Zug.  Helfenstein now has four goals in ten appearances this season.

Kim Hirschovits, Forward - HIFK (FNL)
STATISTICS: Did not play
Not sure whether Hirschovits is hurt or suspended, but he missed two games this week with HIFK

Lauri Korpikoski, Forward - TPS (FNL)
STATISTICS: 2GP 1G 0A 1Pts 0PIM
Korpikoski has gotten off to a better start this year than last.  He registered his second goal of the season in just his sixth game, compared to his rookie year where he went 41 regular season games with no goals.  Korpikoski briefly was shifted to the third line for TPS, but is now back on second line.

Radoslav Kropac, Forward - Vitkovice Steel (CZE)
STATISTICS: Did not play
Kropac has missed several games now

Aarto Laatikainen, Defense - Espoo Blues (FNL)
STATISTICS: 2GP 0G 2A 2Pts 0PIM
Laatikainen picked up his first points of the season, with a two assist game against KalPa

Jan Marek, Forward - Sparta Praha (CZE)
STATISTICS: 3GP 0G 0A 0Pts 0PIM -1
After starting the season with 13 points in 6 games, Marek has apparently cooled off.  The slightly built Czech did not register a point this week in three games with Sparta Praha.

Hannu Pikkarainen, Defense - HIFK (FNL)
STATISTICS: 2GP 1G 1A 2Pts 0PIM
Pikkarainen picked up a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win over Ilves Tampere on Saturday and was voted the third star of the game.

Roman Psurny, Forward - Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL)
STATISTICS: 1GP 1G 0A 1Pts 0PIM +1
Just the one game for Psurny this week and both he and his brother scored, extending his goal/point scoring streak to three games.  Roman has now had a goal in each of the first three games of the season.

Tom Pyatt, Forward - Saginaw Spirit (OHL)
STATISTICS: 2GP 0G 1A 1Pts 0PIM +2
Picked up the third star of the game against Kitchener Rangers on Friday

Martin Richter, Defense - Liberec (CZE)
STATISTICS: 3GP 2G 0A 2Pts 0PIM -1
Richter had a good week, getting goals in the games against Vitkovice and Plzen

Ryan Russell, Forward - Kootenay Ice (WHL)
STATISTICS: 2GP 1G 1A 2Pts 0PIM Even
Russell was shut out early in the week against the Calgary Hitmen, but bounced back with a two point night Saturday against the Swift Current Broncos.

Michael Sauer, Defense - Portland Winterhawks (WHL)
STATISTICS: 2GP 2G 2A 4Pts 9PIM +2
As with his team mate Dubinsky, Sauer has had a strong start to the season, registering points in each of his first three games of the season.  Sauer added a couple more goals this week and picked up the 2nd star of the game in Portland's 5-3 win over Kelowna on Saturday.

Marc Staal, Defense - Sudbury Wolves (OHL)
STATISTICS: 3GP 1G 3A 4Pts 5PIM -4
Returned to the Wolves last week and made an immediately impression scoring a power play goal and picking up the 2nd star of the game.  Things didn't go so well for him Thursday when the Wolves got pummeled 9-3 by the Barrie Colts and Staal finished with a fight and a -3 plus/minus rating.  He closed out the week with a three assist effort against Oshawa (all primary assists).  Staal was also selected captain of the Wolves.

Injured Reserve
Greg Beller, Forward - Green Bay Gamblers (USHL)
Beller suffered a broken collar bone before the season began and will be out 8-10 weeks

Trevor Koverko, Defense - Owen Sound Attack (OHL)
Is out 10-12 weeks with a shoulder injury.

Billy Ryan, Forward - University of Maine (NCAA)
The Bangor News is reporting today that Ryan will be hampered early by a broken bone in his foot.  No word on how serious the injury is or whether he will miss the season openers this coming weekend.
