The special teams failed the Rangers tonight, but some opportunistic scoring and a shootout goal by Marcel Hossa allowed New York to claim two points and remain the only unbeaten team in the Atlantic Division.  The win by the Rangers left them as the only unbeaten team in the Atlantic and ruined the Flyers 40 year anniversary, sending the home team to a 0-1-1 record early in the season.

The Flyers were coming off a 4-0 loss to the Penguins and were immediately on the back foot as the Nylander line dominated play before Michael Nylander himself slotted a Marek Malik rebound by goalie Antero Niitymaki for a 1-0 in the first minute.  New York continued to apply the pressure on the Flyers, drawing three straight 5 on 3 advantages, but some strong killing by Philadelphia and an unwillingness to shoot the puck ultimately allowed the Flyers to escape unscathed.

With the tide quickly shifting, the Rangers found themselves in the penalty box leading to Peter Forsberg's tying goal as he darted in on the weak side and converted a Mike Knuble rebound to give Philadelphia a 5 on 3 goal.  Just over five minutes later and Simon Gagne made it 2-1 Philadelphia and a game that had started with so much promise for the Rangers looked quickly to be slipping out of reach.

New York recovered the advantage in the second period with opportunistic goals by Michal Rozsival and Matt Cullen.  Rozsival took advantage of a Flyers defenseman falling over to walk in uncontested before roofing the puck on a slowly developing play, and Cullen the beneficiary of an unusual deflection of the back partitions that caught Niittymaki behind the net.

The momentum was not to last long however.  Geoff Sanderson beat Henrik Lundqvist on the short side for his first goal in a Flyers uniform to tie the game and then Simon Gagne skated unmolested to the slot with just 1:30 remaining in the period and beat Lundqvist to put Philadelphia back in the lead.

By contrast to the first two periods, the final 20 minutes of regulation were somewhat of an anti-climax.  Adam Hall did manage to tie the game up with a fluttering shot that somehow found the back of the net, but his good work almost came undone when Blair Betts took a holding call on Peter Forsberg with just 2:23 remaining on the clock.

Lundqvist and the Rangers were able to preserve the tie, through the final minutes of regulation and then through the overtime period despite being outshot 4-1 in the extra five minutes.

The story then took a strange turn...

With eight goals scored in regulation, it would have seemed as if the shootout was destined for a quick finish.  Electing to go first, the Flyers quickly went through their first three shots, all saves by Lundqvist, while the Rangers for their part had more difficulty hitting the net.  One by one, both the Flyers and Rangers failed to score before the much maligned Marcel Hossa finally ended the proceedings on the 26th attempt.

TURNING POINT:
Marcel Hossa follows up twelve saves by Henrik Lundqvist with the game winner in the shootout

GAME NOTES:
Adam Hall and Matt Cullen registered their first goals as Rangers, Shanahan collected his first assist since coming to New York.  The twenty five shooters without a goal was a new league record, and the twenty six shots needed to record a victory was second only to the Rangers-Capitals thirty round affair last season.

The Rangers have not started the season 2-0-0 since 2000-01.

WHO STOOD OUT:
Henrik Lundqvist overcame a modest start with some impressive goaltending in the shootout.  Karel Rachunek and Aaron Ward had solid games on the defense, and the line of Straka, Nylander and Jagr dominated the play much of the game.

WHO DIDN'T:
For the second straight game it was hard to find anyone on the Rangers roster who underperformed.  There were a handful of unneded penalties, including calls to Rozsival, Nylander and Betts.
