Yeah it was the preseason, but it's always nice to get a win against Martin Brodeur and the Devils.  With a line-up that featured only a handful of NHL veterans and no top line offense, the Rangers outplayed their more experienced rivals with some opportunistic play, taking advantage of Martin Brodeur's off-season rust.

Blair Betts opened the scoring with a backhand shot that beat Brodeur at the 4:00 minute mark of the first period, and the Blueshirts quickly pressed their advantage with two more goals from Adam Hall and Brandon Dubinsky to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead at the 8:17 mark.  From all reports Dubinsky's goal was one that Brodeur should've had back, but it did not dampen the enthusiasm of the 20 year old Alaskan who told Newsday that had always been a dream of his to score a goal against Brodeur.

Meanwhile in net Al Montoya stopped 11 of 12 shots for the win before Stephen Valiquette stepped in and stopped all 13 shots he faced in the second half of the game.

If there was any disappointment perhaps it would have been that the Rangers were unable to score on two lengthy 5 on 3 opportunities, but with the likes of Lee Falardeau, Jason Ward, Aaron Ward and Darius Kasparaitis getting power play time, it's probably not wholly a surprise.

Of more concern was a late injury to Nigel Dawes, who took a David Hale clearing attempt apparently off the chin.  Dawes went down to the ice and was initially helped to the bench before retiring to the lockerroom for repairs.  There were no reports in this morning's paper, but it appears at least initially that it is not an injury that will keep him out of the line-up.

The Rangers had two fights in the game with Ryan Hollweg taking on Grant Marshall after Marshall checked Marc Staal into the boards heavily, and then try-out Francis Lessard took on his try-out counterpart Nathan Perrott.

The Rangers and Devils play again Wednesday night (7:00pm - MSG) and the Rangers are expected to ice a completely new line-up.
