Rallying from a 5-0 deficit, the Rangers almost pulled off the most improbable of comebacks, falling short by two goals as the Senators added an empty netter in the final minute to seal the deal.  Through 43 minutes of playing time, the Rangers were unable to get their game on track, particularly apparent in the second period when they allowed three straight unanswered goals to give the Senators a 4-0 lead and cause Tom Renney to use his time out and call Weekes back to the bench.

A late game non-call by the officials, who initially whistled a penalty on Chris Phillips for clearing the puck out on the full, but then overturned, was the final nail it what could have been an opportunity to tie the game with less than three minutes to go.

TURNING POINT:
Early in the second period, the Rangers give up their second goal and appear to lose all confidence less than a minute later when Vermette makes it 3-0

GAME NOTES:
Jed Ortmeyer registered his first points of the season, picking up two primary assists.   Kevin Weekes made his first start since December 21st, nine games ago.  Blair Betts broke a seven game pointless streak, with a goal in the third.  Adam Hall was slated to start the game on the third line, but was pushed down by Jed Ortmeyer from the opening face-off...Hall hasn't scored a goal since November 28th.

Kevin Weekes had trouble controlling his rebounds, but didn't look as bad as the score would suggest.  He could probably have come out on the first goal by Eaves, but lack of playing time probably contributed to that, and an earlier shot that went under him, but rebounded off the post.

Marcel Hossa scored his first goal since November 21st, just his second of the season, Jason Ward his first since December 21st.

Brendan Shanahan hit a cross-bar on the power play and was denied on at least one other occasion by an impressive glove save by Ray Emery.  Shanahan and Darius Kasparaitis collided in the second period, but neither player was hurt.  Brendan Shanahan was just a couple of seconds away from giving the Rangers a chance to tie the game at the end of the first, but could not get his shot off on the breakaway before time ran out.

Henrik Lundqvist came in and faced just five shots in around 25 minutes of playing time.  The goal that he allowed to Daniel Alfredsson proved to be the winner and handed Lundqvist his 13th loss of the season, one more than last season when he allowed just 12 regulation losses in 50 games.

The Rangers gave up just two power plays on the game, but also drew just two.  Neither team was successful with the man advantage.

WHO STOOD OUT:
Jed Ortmeyer seemed to be one of the sparks in the third, and was instrumental in two of the goals and provided some energy.

WHO DIDN'T:
The entire team (including Ortmeyer) came out flat and failed to rebound from a poor defensive performance against the Islanders.  Fedor Tyutin had a particularly rough night, being on the ice for four of the five goals against.  Jaromir Jagr looked listless once again after looking as if he rebounded somewhat against the Islanders.  Michael Nylander failed to take several shot opportunities and drew the ire of the Garden faithful.
