It was simple really.  The red-hot Rangers coming off three straight dominating wins, were taking on the worst team in the league, and a team that had traded arguably their best player just two days before.  Then again, if things were that simple there'd be no reason to play the games.

Once again New York demonstrated a frustrating inability to establish any sort of consistency, and more particularly the ability to play well on home ice.  To add insult to injury they lost Marek Malik (upper body) and Brendan Shanahan (concussion) to what look like substantial injuries, and saw several other players including Henrik Lundqvist (shoulder), Jaromir Jagr (shoulder/back), Adam Ward (hand) and Jed Ortmeyer (face), suffer injuries of varying degrees.

It was an old fashioned dog fight, and the Rangers head coach decided against bringing his top dog (Colton Orr) to the game.  To be fair, the move could've paid dividends if the Rangers had cashed in on any of their six power play chances that resulted from the over aggressive play of the Flyers.  But instead of continuing their hot streak on the man advantage, the Blueshirts again fell into some bad habits, over-passing the puck, passing up chances to shoot and seemingly unable to deal with the extra pressure that the Flyers were bringing to the puck carrier.

Despite spending much of the first 10 minutes of the game on the penalty kill, it was the Flyers who would open the scoring.  Karel Rachunek was unable to handle a puck outside the Rangers blueline, and the ensuing rush saw Aaron Ward get out skated by Geoff Sanderson, who drove to the net to deflect Mike Knuble's cross ice pass behind Lundqvist.  Marcel Hossa responded two and a half minutes later, deflecting a seemingly harmless Dan Girardi shot between the pads of Niitymaki to tie the game.

From then on, there was little to cheer for if you were a Blueshirt fan.  With the Rangers on their fifth power play of the game, Michal Rozsival botched a pass at center ice and then gave up on the play to allow R.J. Umberger to break in with a team mate on a 2 on 0 and register just the second shorthanded goal given up by the Rangers this season.

Instead of responding in the second period, New York struggled to get their offense going and managed just five shots on goal.  The hole got a little bit deeper when rookie defensemen Dan Girardi got caught looking before he had the puck and gave up another odd man rush to the Flyers, with Simon Gagne converting on the opportunity.

Stephen Valiquette took over in the third period, perhaps allowing Lundqvist to recover from a rising shot from Geoff Sanderson that caught him in the shoulder early in the second.  It was the first NHL action that Valiquette had seen since the 2003-04 season, and it certainly looked that way on the two goals that he gave up in the final period.  New York did manage to respond with goals by Petr Prucha and then Matt Cullen, but it was a case of too little too late.

The scariest moment of the game came in the final twenty minutes with the Flyers controlling the game.  Brendan Shanahan and Mike Knuble both got caught looking the wrong way and skated full speed into each other just inside the Rangers blueline.  Shanahan appeared to be knocked out cold, while Knuble also looked unsteady on his feet.  Both players were helped from the ice, Shanahan leaving by way of stretcher.

New York will need to regroup tomorrow against another team they were expected to beat, but will likely have to do so without Shanahan and Malik, and with several other players nursing injuries suffered in the game.

TURNING POINT:
Philadelphia comes out battering and bruising the Rangers, giving them the opportunity to make the visitors to pay on the power play.  Six chances in the first 20 minutes with the man advantage, and New York can't score.

GAME NOTES:
Brendan Shanahan collided in open ice with Mike Knuble mid-way through the third period.  Shanahan was knocked out completely, and Knuble had to be helped off the ice, looking woozy as his team mates escorted him to the lockerroom.  After being taken off the ice on a stretcher, Shanahan was taken to hospital for further tests which look positive at this point.

Several other Rangers also were beaten and battered in the loss.  Henrik Lundqvist sat out the third period after he took a high rising shot off his left shoulder in the second period.  He continued to play out the remainder of the period, but sat in the third.  Initial reports say that he'll be fine to go tomorrow.  Marek Malik looks like he'll miss tomorrow's game, apparently injuring his arm or shoulder after being checked behind the net.

Adam Ward hurt his hand fighting Alexandre Picard and Jed Ortmeyer required stitches to the face after injuring himself while delivering a hit, but both are expected to be in the line-up tomorrow.

Henrik Lundqvist played in his 100th game, but Valiquette ended up taking the loss when the Rangers scored two goals in the third to wipe Lundqvist's slate clean.

New York gave up just their second shorthanded goal of the season when Michal Rozsival mishandled the puck at center ice and let R.J. Umberger in on a 2 on 0 and beat Lundqvist.

Sean Avery drew three power plays for the Rangers, and assisted on Cullen's shorthanded goal.  Dan Girardi picked up his first and second NHL points on assists to goals by Hossa and Cullen.

Valiquette saw his first NHL playing time since March of 2004, also with the Rangers.  Valiquette picked up just the second loss of his career, also both with the Rangers.

WHO STOOD OUT:
Sean Avery again played a strong game, drawing penalties, having a fight and getting an assist.

WHO DIDN'T:
Michal Rozsival's game has been deteriorating of late and
