Coming back from a mauling like the one the Flyers gave to the Rangers yesterday can sometimes be a difficult challenge.  At least this time the home team was up to the challenge, holding off an opportunistic Blackhawks team by the tune of 2-1 on home ice.  The Rangers started off the right foot with goals from Martin Straka and Marcel Hossa, and then clung to the lead, despite the usual set of defensive miscues and an inability once again to score when needed.

Jaromir Jagr and Martin Straka both stepped up in the absence of Brendan Shanahan, who was released from hospital today after being knocked unconscious in yesterday's grueling defeat to the Philadelphia Flyers.  Thomas Pock and Colton Orr replaced Shanahan and Marek Malik (shoulder) in the line-up, and the team managed to limit the opposition's offense for the most part.

It certainly helped that the Rangers got off to a quick 2-0 lead, getting the MSG crowd firmly behind them in the early part of the game.  Another defensive lapse by the pairing of Karel Rachunek and Aaron Ward, lead up to a cheap goal by Martin Havlat as he caught Henrik Lundqvist cheating.  But that was all the offense that the Blackhawks would muster in the game, as the home town Rangers won just their 12th game of the season on home ice.

GAME NOTES:
Jaromir Jagr had an assist on the first Ranger goal to extend his point scoring streak to six games (2G 7A).  Martin Straka scored the goal, his first on the power play since January 9th, a string of fifteen games.  Jagr's streak is even longer, going twenty five games back to December 19th of last year.

Matt Cullen extended his season high point scoring streak to four games (1G, 3A) and Straka extended his streak to five games (3G, 3A), while Michael Nylander saw his seven game point scoring streak come to an end.

Brendan Shanahan and Marek Malik both missed the game with injuries suffered in yesterday's defeat.  Shanahan made an appearance at the garden after leaving the hospital to wish his team mates well.

Henrik Lundqvist moved into 16th all time on the Ranger netminder list with his 101st NHL appearance.  He broke a tie with Mike Dunham who had played 100 games for New York before leaving as a free agent.  Lundqvist is close to passing Doug Soetart (103), Andy Aitkenhean (106), Marcel Pelletier (109) and Jim Henry (109).  He also passed Jacques Plante in the Minutes Played category, moving into 15th spot all time, just 280 minutes behind Glenn Healy.

WHO STOOD OUT:
Jaromir Jagr started the game strongly with Shanahan out of the line-up, and was setting up his team mates left and right to begin the game.  Martin Straka could've had a hat trick if it wasn't for some sharp saves by Patrick Lalime and a goal post in the first period.

WHO DIDN'T:
Pascal Dupuis has been an interesting addition to the line-up, but has yet to make much of an impact.  He's also been on the ice for three even strength goals now in the last two games, and has contributed to none since his goal in his Rangers debut.
