It seems that every game you look at recently, the Rangers had a chance to come away with a valuable two points and instead fell short.  This time they failed to convert on numerous chances in the second period with the puck in the Devils end.  Despite outshooting the Devils 22-12 through the first forty minutes of hockey, it was the Devils who held the upper hand 2-1.  No matter how good the chances were, it seemed as if Martin Brodeur was better.  So perhaps it was ironic that Jaromir Jagr tied the game on a simple dump from behind the net that deflected in off Brodeur's stick as he scrambled to get back into the crease.

In the overtime period the Rangers again had an opportunity to take the game when Jaromir Jagr drew a questionable power play to give the Rangers a 4 on 3.  Again the Rangers managed to get some shots on net, but each time Brodeur had a clear view to the puck and made the saves forcing the teams to go to the shootout.  New York went 0 for 3, with Matt Cullen hitting a post and Nylander beating Brodeur but shooting it into his pad.

The Rangers will now have to wait to see what the teams do in front of them.

TURNING POINT:
Perhaps you could argue that the second period was really the turning point, with the Rangers dominating play the Devils for most of the period it was instead the Devils that scored and came away with a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.  The Rangers did tie it up, and even had a power play in overtime, but couldn't get the job done.

GAME NOTES:
Sean Avery made his Rangers debut and registered his first point with the team, along with four shots and a minor penalty for goaltender interference.  Jaromir Jagr scored his 20th goal of the season, making this the 16th straight season that he's reached that mark.  The news isn't so good though when you realize that he's on for the lowest goal total of his career and may not even reach 30.

Bryce Lampman was a healthy scratch with the return of Michal Rozsival to the line-up from injury.

The Rangers line-up was slightly younger than the Devils line-up, something that hasn't occurred for some years.

WHO STOOD OUT:
No one player really stood out for the team, but the Rangers as a whole played a fairly solid game.  Sean Avery was very noticeable in his Rangers debut and generally drew positive reviews.

WHO DIDN'T:
Michal Rozsival and Karel Rachunek are an interesting defensive combination, and one that will continually need support from the forwards.  Both defensemen still look uncertain with the puck at times.  Aaron Ward continues to struggle, though he did lay a heavy hit on Sergei Brylin at one point, and appeared to pick up the hitting as the game went on.
