The sad thing about Carter is that he really isn't a bad hockey player. What I see wrong is that he is on a team that simply can't make the best use of his skills.
For him to be effective he has to have a playmaking center to set him up because Carter can't create his own offense. Using him with Lindros has been a bad idea mainly because Lindros is not suited to be a setup type center. To be honest the only Ranger center who comes close to being what Carter needs would be Nedved but he is needed elsewhere. To me Carter is an example of what Slats does worst, making a trade without considering how to get the best out of the player he is trading for.
Now as for your kid suggestions. I would use Moore with Holik to start with, the idea being that Moore (who is expected to be a winger in time) would learn more about the checking side of the NHL.
Stals I use with Rucinsky and Lundmark (move him back to center) as Stals appears willing to do the dirty corner work. Murray for now on the 4th line to help Messier skate up and down the ice (hopefully Barnaby takes him under his wing)
Sad though with the kid defensemen as who would anyone really feel comfortable paired with this kid. He has offensive skills but his defense at the most is a question mark (3 goals but is an "E")
