► RUMOR MILL

Thursday - December 5th
Per Elliot Friedman of Sportsnet:
Prior to the December 1st deadline, the Oikers apparently tried again to move Jesse Pujljujarvi, and the Rangers were reportedly one of the teams interested.
The trade would have involved Lias Andersson going the other way, but ultimately they could work out a deal.

Shanahan's bans are a part of the NHL's problem.
|

With the NBA having a late start this season and baseball just beginning, the NHL has an opportunity for making a huge statement throughout the USA. More American kids are playing hockey than ever before and with the Rangers having such a great season, the Metropolitan area is hockey aware. In the first 2 wins of the first round, the Rangers have been on the back pages of the 3 New York papers. New York Rangers have been on local and national radio stations and a focal point of the NHL and it's fans. So, when the NHL suspended Carl Hagelin for 3 games for an elbow to the head that most feel was excessive, everyone noticed. It clearly should have been a 5 minute major and possibly a game suspension, but Shanahan, "The All Powerful Mighty Oz of Suspensions" has no set rules and went overboard compared to other playoff suspensions handed out.
Some othe suspensions handed out were Nashville's defenseman Weber doing a WWE wrestling style head smash of a Red Wing player and only recieving a $2,500 fine. Washington's Backstrom crosschecking a Bruin in the face and getting a 1 game ban. Ottowa's Matt Carkner(who didn't play game 1 of the playoffs) was dressed for game 2 in the same game Hagelin hit Alfredsson, for the sole purpose of attacking Brian Boyle and suckerpunched him then kept punching him while he was down on the ground and ONLY got a 1 game ban. Neal, who was a repeat offender< had 2 hearings for a head shot on a star player and another hit away from the puck and only recieved a 1 game suspension for BOTH. Shanahan says that it is because of injury, which makes no sense at all. INTENT to injure should be the main point of the suspensions, and if you want to add games for a 'real' injury I think teams and fans could live with it. The main reason why the NHL is looking foolish at this time when the whole world is watching is because of the inconsistency of the suspensions. If the NHL chooses not to get rid of Shanahan from this post, it need to be made into a couple of people on a board. Make Shanny the head of it, add a player like Lindros(either one since they both left hockey due to head injuries), someone representing the ownership and someone representing the players side, and have a set set of rules to go by. Another issue is that players are allowed to swing there sticks without issue at goalies as long as the puck was near the goal. Alot of times, like Zenopka in the last game and PArise does it all the time along with others, swipe at the goalies skates and pads and very rarely get called for penalties. THIS is a huge issue as MOST goalies are very much a key part to their team and those stick fouls on goalies could very easily take out a goalie through injury. Some things the NHL should be looking at, they rarely focus on until a top level goalie gets severely injured. Whenever the Rangers are involved and look like the can challenge for the Stanley Cup, all eyes are on the NHL. Now it is time for the NHL to get it's act together , make the new NHL fan understand all aspects of the game--INCLUDING a set disciplinary process, and keep the national audience it has on a national television.
