RUMOR MILL

Thursday - December 5th

Per Elliot Friedman of Sportsnet:

Prior to the December 1st deadline, the Oikers apparently tried again to move Jesse Pujljujarvi, and the Rangers were reportedly one of the teams interested.

The trade would have involved Lias Andersson going the other way, but ultimately they could work out a deal.

Rangers Going For It
Posted by Michael M. Ramos ≡ 11:33:24 PM - March 1, 2015

The NHL trade deadline in less than 24 hours away and it looks like Glen Sather was doing his due diligence to make the Rangers a Cup contender. The G.M. was expected to make a few changes and not shake-up the core for a 6th defenseman and a center to win some faceoffs. For all that follow Rangers G.M. Hall of Famer Glen Sather, it is easy to see how he loves to deal for former 1st round picks or guys that had connections with current rostered players, and he did not dissapoint this year.

In the offseason, he was able to have former 1st round Chicago draftpick Kevin Hayes sign with the Blueshirts and he has fit in nicely as a 3rd line center. His only issue during his rookie season is on the faceoff dot. The Rangers went out and traded with the San Jose Sharks and got ex-first round pick center/winger James Sheppard for the N.Y. Rangers 2016 4th round pick while San Jose keeps $100,000 of his caphit. He will probably fill in at third line center or third line winger but take most of the faceoffs for that line. Sheppard is 26 years old and is a solid player that stands at 6'1" and 215 lbs.  He will replace Lee Stempniak in the lineup who was shipped to Winnipeg for Swede Carl Klingberg who is a 6'3" 205 lb. forward that has yet to get himself into the NHL on a regular basis. Those were the types of moves that were expected.

The NHL and Rangerworld were shocked to see Glen Sather and ex-understudy Don Maloney make a blockbuster deal after Antoine Vermette was already dealt to the Chicago Blackhawks. The Rangers sent packing Anthony Duclair who looked like he would wind up as the replacement for Mats Zuccarello as the Post was reporting that the Zuccarello camp wanted $5.5 million per year on a multi-year deal which would not fit into the Rangers future salary cap. Along with Duclair, the Rangers also sent John Moore (who couldn't solidify the 6th dman spot this season and shared it with Matt Hunwick), a 2nd round pick in 2015 (the later of the 2 the Rangers have, theirs and Tampa Bays), and next years 1st rounder in 2016 (it is cap protected if the Rangers somehow fail to make the playofs next season). The Rangers receive from Arizona..... Keith Yandle (at only 1/2 his salary cap), a defenseman Chris Summers another former 1st round pick and who played with Carl Hagelin in Michigan) and a 4th round pick in 2016 (it is this pick that allowed the Rangers to trade theirs away to get James Sheppard).

SO today, the Rangers actually traded Duclair, John Moore, their 2016 1st round pick, a 2nd round pick in 2016(the higher number of either theirs or Tampa's which they own from the Martin St. Louis deal), their 4th rounder (they earned a better 4th in the the Arizona deal), and Lee Stempniak FOR Keith Yandle (at 1/2 price caphit), James Sheppard, Chris Summers, Carl Klinsberg, and enough Cap room to sign MATS ZUCCARELLO to a multi-year deal (should be official tomorrow and is expected to be for 4 years at $4.5 mil caphit per year). Great job by the General Manager and his support group of Jeff Gorton and Gordie Clarke and their staffs. Will the Rangers keep with the hot hand at the deadline or are they set? Only Sather knows for sure.

LET'S GO RANGERS!!
