Two Boyle mistakes wind up in the back of the Rangers net!
|
|
Posted by Michael M. Ramos ≡ 9:26:32 AM - May 1, 2015
Game 1 of the 2nd round with the Rangers verus the Washigton Capitals ended in controversy but it ended in a 2-1 Caps win and a 1-0 lead in the best of 7. The Rangers seemed to relax for a second in time after the Caps Backstrom clearly boarded Rangers defenseman Dan Boyle and knocked the puck loose whick lead to the winning goal with just over a seond left in the game. The refs blew the call, but Boyle made two bonehead plays that lead to both Capitals goals. On the winning goal, as the puck went into the corner, Boyle tried to kill the last 4 seconds by holding the puck against the boards in the corner by the goal line with Caps closing in on him. All he had to do was move the puck around like the Rangers always do and cost the Rangers the game. Earlier in the game, Boyle kept moving backwards as Ovechkin gained the zone until he provided Ovechkin a perfect screen and then to top it off stuck his stick put so that the shot would deflect up and over Lundqvist's stick side. I know that the Rangers brass paid alot for Dan Boyle and he is one of Glen Sather's reclamation projects, but maybe he needs to sit the next game and send a message to all the players that if you don't play Rangers hockey 100% of the time, you will sit. Matt Hunwick would not have made either of those stupid and passive plays.
J.T. Miller also made a bone head play and passed the puck from behind the goal line right to Washington forward Ward at the top of the Rangers crease in which Ward hit the post. At least Miller's mistake didn't wind up in the back of the net but he will most likely be the one that will be the example. It is clear in just the first game that this series will decided by mistakes. Both teams know each other as they have played 4 of the last 5 years in the playoffs with each winning twice. The Ovechkin factor is the big difference and will be if Rick Nash stays missing in action. Ovechkin had a goal and an assist while Rick Nash was playing on the perimter and knocked off the puck easily.
I can hear the NHL this offseason say that they made a mistake in Game #1 and that goal should not have been allowed and a 2 minute boarding penalty should have been given to Backstrom. The NHL made a similar statement this last offseason and gave a sorry ass apology to the Rangers for Game #2 L.A. goal in which they said their 2nd goal should not have been allowed. The Rangers lost that game 3-2 in overtime but that means that the Rangers would have won the game in regulation and came back to the Garden tied at 1-1 instead of down 0-2. The Rangers had to move on from that NHL mistake and they will have to move on from this NHL mistake, it just seems a pattern has formed.
In the NHL playoffs the players need to have a short memory, so the Rangers need to turn the page and think about Saturday and learn from their mistakes. The Rangers coaches need to keep Nash away from Orpik as that is the matchup Washington wants. Since it seems like this series will be long, each time Orpik comes off the ice. that is when the Rangers should put Nash on then. Put Nash on a line Hayes and Kreider and just bang the crap out of Orpik every time down the ice to wear him down. The need to hit Backstrom every time he touches the puck as he played over 20 minutes and the offense comes off his stick. Hopefully the Rangers keep their heads up and stay positive because minus the Boyle mistakes, the Rangers played a pretty good game.
Stay strong Rangers and even it up at 1 before the trip to Washington!!
