RUMOR MILL

Wednesday - July 20th

It appears Matthew Tkachuk could be leaving Calgary soon, with the 24 year old forward being taken to salary arbitration by his club. Tkachuk would reportedly be interested in a US city, and it's thought the New York Rangers would be one of his preferred destinations.

The chances of that desire being realized though, are very low indeed. With the Rangers having signed Vincent Trocheck to a seven year deal last week, and with contracts coming due to Alexis Lafreniere, K'Andre Miller, Zac Jones, Vitali Kravtsov and Filip Chytil next season, it's hard to see how the Rangers could add yet another big name on a long term contract.

In order to clear $10 million in Cap space to account for Tkachuk, the Rangers are somewhat restricted by the NMCs the've handed out to Mika Zibanejad, Chris Kreider, Jacob Trouba, Artemi Panarin, and more recently, Vincent Trocheck.

The five players account for around $40M in Cap space, with untouchable players Adam Fox and Igor Shesterkin added an additional $15M or so.

The only way this would work is if they somehow also got one of that group, like Panarin, Trouba or Kreider, to waive their NMC to go to Calgary, which seems highly unlikely given they all set career marks here last year and seem well settled in New York.

In addition, the Rangers would likely have to deal additional players like Kakko, Chytil and perhaps a guy like Lundkvist, which perhaps could be overcome by the addition and the remaining depth in the organization.

Without the headliner going the other way though, it seems unlikely that this type of move would be possible.

Another Clunker of a Game 2. Series now 1-1
Posted by Michael M. Ramos ≡ 6:14:08 PM - May 18, 2015

Game Updates:3rd period  3rd period..Found Rick Nash...got a breakaway and of course couldn't finish and then Tampa scores at end of the powerplay for a 4-2 Tampa lead. Unfreakingbelievable! ANother stupid penalty and another stupid goal against. 5-2 Tampa. Stay out of the Damn box! On the scoresheet it will look like 2 powerplay goals for each team but it was really 3 for Tampa as the Rangers never got the puck out once the powerplay against ended. Bot MSL and D.Boyle have 2 assists tonight but are still a -2 on the stat sheet meaning for everything good they did, they did bad twice as much.

Hopefully Mats Zuccarello is back for game 3 and can take some of those minutes away from MSL on the powerplay and 5 on 5. This is just "one of those games" and the Rangers will just have to have a short memory and turn the page.

It would seem that Rick Nash has to be injured as he disappeared near the end of the season and as they said on NBCSPORTS that they key of the game was the shorthanded breakaway by Rick Nash that he couldn't finish and instead of a 3-3 game, Tampa scored 2 more for the 5-2 lead with 3 minutes left. It's going to be a long series and Tanner Glass just mixed things up in front of the Tampa net but Tampa doesn't dress anyone who would be considered a fighter so it was useless and led to another Tampa Powerplay goal (which there were really 4 tonight).

The Rangers are a good road team and will have to bring their A game to bring the series to their advantage. With the (officially 3) 4 powerplay goals and the shorthanded goal, the Rangers need to realize they have to play as much 5 on 5 as possible. A sad performance overall by the whole Rangers team and now the Rangers with Lundqvist in net are 5 and 13 in Game #2's in his playoff career. Turn the page on this clunker of a game in a 2-6 loss to Tampa and a now best out of 5 series. The Rangers can never do anything easy. Being a Rangers fan is never relaxing. LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

2nd PERIOD: The game has gotten crazy again. Boyle STILL on powerplaywhich leads to a Stepan powerplay goal from beind the net that he banked in off of the Bolts defenseman. Sheppard misses a wide open net after Bolts goalie Bishop misplays the puck behind the net. The difference in this game so far is that the Lightning finish the crazy plays and the Rangers missed on their last one. End of 2 periods....Crazy hockey and the Lightning lead 3-2 in a game that can easily go either way.  Rangers need to settle down still and play Rangers hockey. There have been times in this game that the Rangers have been terrible. Yandle needs to make a play here for the Rangers to win this game.

STILL, HAS ANYONE SEEN NASH????

HAS ANYONE SEEN RICK NASH THIS GAME??????????

The Rangers have started the 2nd the way they played the 1st period, out of sync. This happened many times during the regular season and in the playoffs it can change this series. Tyler Johnson finishes off his hatrick and a 3-1 Tampa lead off of another poor job by Dan Boyle getting the puck to the net and hit it off of Palats stick and body while Marc Staal fell going for the puck which led to a Tampa 2 on 1  which led to Dan Boyle laying on his stomach while Tampa put the puck past Lundqvist in a goal mouth scramble. Two stupid plays by the vets of Martin St. Louis and Dan Boyle (both ex-Lightning players) and two goals against. Time to cut down their ice time and get them off the damn poweless powerplay with them on it. The game is far from over, but the Blueshirts need to find their game or this series will be tied going south to Tampa.

1st period: Rangers go on a 5 on 3 advantage and Vigneault puts both MSL and Dan Boyle on the top of the powerplay. Instead of putting 2 players in front and taking the goalies eyes away with a screen, they play around with it at the point and MSL coughs it up for a breakaway goal for the Bolts and are down 0-1. Then the Rangers then get another powerplay and the coach stays with the same two and a shot from the point by Boyle and a screen by Chris Kreider who puts the puck past Bishop for a 1-1 tie with the Garden crowd going crazy. Then back to back penalties from each team leads to alot of open ice. Crazy pace to the game so far. Rangers need to play with discipline and settle down as so far they are playing Tampa's type of game. Rangers survive the all out press and desperation of the Lightning but go down 2-1 at the end of the first period. If the Rangers keep playing undisciplined like this, they will have trouble staying in this game. The Rangers need to play 5 on 5 and if they are given a 5 on 3 advantage again, they need to decline it as they easily have the worst 5 on 3 advantage I have ever seen. It always looks as if they never work on what to do with a 5 on 3 advantage and it costs early in this game and swung all the momentum to the Lightning. Tyler Johnson 2...Rangers 1. Rangers really need to figure out if MSL needs to sit in Game 3 if he doesn't wake up.

*******************************************************************************************

When the Rangers make the playoffs, you can always count on Henrik Lundqvist(9-4 this postseason) to raise his level of play and give the Rangers a chance in every game. He and his Ranger teammates have outdueled division rivals Pittsburgh Penguins backstopped by Fluery and Washington Caps Holtby so far and his counterpart in nets this series against Tampa Bay is 6'8" Ben Bishop. If Game 1 is an example of what to expect, it will be a bad bounce or powerplay goal that will decide games in this series as again both goalies started out excellent.

On the Rangers side, Game 1 looked like they had more room to play their more opened up offensive brand as Tampa's forwards didn't seem to be putting the constant pressure on Rangers defensemen forcing the quick pass and forcing them to play more on their heels. If the Lightning stay with the same game plan, look for the Rangers defense to play a very large role in the Rangers offense. This is the type of series that a player like Keith Yandle and Brian Boyle can make an impact with going forward. The Rangers did not sit back and "watch" ex-captain Ryan Callahan play his game without consequence. The Rangers hit their ex-teammates and let it be known that although they may be friends off the ice, all the Bolts players are standing in the Rangers way in their quest towards the Cup.

Both teams were missing an important player to their teams in Game 1. For the Rangers it is "The Hobbit" Mats Zuccarello. Zucarello was seen skating by himself on the Garden ice after beeing seen a few days at the practice rink working out getting himself into game shape. He will be a huge addition to the Rangers offense on and off the ice. For the Bolts, it is ex-Ranger Brian Boyle who missed Game 1 with a mystery injury. Boyle will not help in their speed game but will be bigtime money in the faceoff circle barring his injury being to his groin or arm which could hinderhis abilities in the circle.

Game 2 at MSG could be a big game if the Rangers win, going up 2-0 over the Bolts with the addition of Mats Zuccarello coming within the next two games and providing another lift to their game.Lok for the Lightning to play with total desperation tonight as they do not want to go home to Florida down 0-2.

LET'S GO RANGERS!!
