Frank Seravalli The Daily Faceoff put together a list of the top 15 trade targets as we close out the second month. Amongst the list is former Ranger J.T. Miller, whom is among several Canucks players that might become available given their start to the season.

There's a lot working against this one though, especially with the Rangers now talking to Strome about an extension. While Miller can also play wing as well as center, the challenge will likely be trying to fit the $5.25M salary into the roster for next year, not to mention what they would do after next season when he becomes a UFA.

The 28 year old forward (29 in March), certainly has done well in Vancouver, putting up nearly a point a game (141 points in 146 games), and could well want out if the Canucks decide to rebuild. Alternatively, the Canucks might want to keep much of their current team, and certainly someone who has been such a good fit there.

Question Of The Day

August 19th, 2021

Earlier this year the Rangers won by a margin of nine goals as they beat the Flyers 9-0. How many times has the margin been bigger?

Igor Shesterkin turned up when nearly everyone else didn't

In a game that looked even more one-sided than the 41-23 shot total looked, the Rangers somehow found a way to win their second straight game, beating the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 in overtime.  Actually it really wasn't a mystery, Igor Shesterkin was the reason...that and some instances of magic from Mika Zibanejad and Artemi Panarin.

To be honest, the Rangers had no right to win this game, and yet now sit with five points out of eight, having played around five periods of good hockey out of the twelve they've suited up for so far.

Twenty thoughts on the game:

  1. This was Igor Shesterkin's 50th game as a Ranger, becoming the 31st goalie in franchise history to reach the mark
  2. In 50 games, Shesterkin has now faced 40 or more shots on seven occasions, he is 7-0-0 in those games.  In fact he's 9-0-0 in 35+ save games.
  3. He didn't face 40 or more shots in any of his 35 games last year, so it's been a while for him to flex his save muscle
  4. Shesterkin has now backstopped the Rangers to all five of their points on the season, going 2-0-1.  The only other game was the 5-1 opening loss to the Capitals, in which Alexandar Georgiev was in net
  5. The Rangers gave up 17 shots in the second period, but Shesterkin stopped 16 of them.  The only shot he didn't save was one in which Patrik Nemeth pushed Michael Bunting into him, and it appeared from some angles, that Bunting used his foot to push Shesterkin's leg into the net.  Not that Gallant chose to change it, so we'll never know about that one
  6. OT was an end to end affair, with seven shots taken.  There was a bit of adventure from Shesterkin when he came far out of his net to play the puck, only for the Leafs to keep it in and take a long shot at the net that Shesterkin somehow stopped far out in the slot.  The rebound could've also caused problems, but somehow the Rangers kept it out
  7. The Maple Leafs hit the post on consecutive shots in the third period, but they of course don't count as saves for Shesterkin
  8. After this game, Shesterkin now has a .949 Save%, which is 4th in the NHL behind tonight's opponent Jack Campbell, 39 year old Mike Smith and former Ranger Cam Talbot.  His 1.62 GAA is 11th in the league
  9. It was Shesterkin's 27th win, which tied him with Antti Raanta for 27th all time on the Rangers
  10. As of now, Shesterkin has a career Save% of .923, which is tied for second with Johnny Bower, and behind just Cam Talbot and his .931 in goaltenders who appeared in more than two games for the Rangers
  11. Zibanejad and Panarin scored the only two goals for the Rangers, both were their respect firsts of the season
  12. Zibanejad now has a three game point streak with 1 goal and 4 assists
  13. Zibanejad also now leads the team with five points on the season
  14. The overtime goal by Artemi Panarin, was his first as a Ranger
  15. Morgan Barron was called up from Hartford yesterday, but the coach elected to stay with Greg McKegg on the fourth line
  16. Barclay Goodrow started on the second line alongside Filip Chytil and Panarin, but with the way the team was playing, Gallant experiemented somewhat putting Sammy Blais on the line, and putting Panarin with Zibanejad in the third period
  17. Nils Lundkvist continued to have his moments in this game, and while he wasn't responsible for the goal against, he was on the ice for it
  18. The Rangers early success on faceoffs are a long forgotten memory.  They went 4 for 19 in the first period, and finishing just 13 of 54.  Mika Zibanejad went 6 for 21 to have the 'best' percentage at just 29%.  Barclay Goodrow was 1 for 7, Filip Chytil 2 for 8 and Kevin Rooney 3 for 11.  Greg McKegg and Chris Kreider went a collective 1 for 6
  19. Adam Fox - 3 game point scoring and Chris Kreider - 3 game goal scoring, both had their streaks come to an end
  20. Rangers winning in overtime, in Toronto seem to be a thing right now.  The last three games between these two teams in Toronto have all ended in an OT win to the Rangers: 2-1, 5-4, 2-1
