RUMOR MILL

Thursday - December 5th

Per Elliot Friedman of Sportsnet:

Prior to the December 1st deadline, the Oikers apparently tried again to move Jesse Pujljujarvi, and the Rangers were reportedly one of the teams interested.

The trade would have involved Lias Andersson going the other way, but ultimately they could work out a deal.

Trendy Rangers
Posted by Daniel Akeson ≡ - October 8, 2007

Henrik Lundqvist. Defensive gaffs. Both have been a major part of the young 2007 - 08 regular season and both are trends worth discussing.

To start with the positive, goaltender Lundqvist has been the sole reason the Rangers have not been blown out in the first two games, defeating the Florida Panthers 5 - 2 at MSG and falling to the Ottawa Senators 2 - 0 in Canada.

While Lundqvist got off to a slow start last season, he is currently in mid-season form and really carried the momentum of strong late preseason play into the regular season. This has given the Rangers a consistency and advantage that hasn't been present since the days of Mike Richter.

Additionally, both star acquisitions Chris Drury and Scott Gomez have played strong. Drury has shown a warrior mentality and a real head for the net. Gomez has had flashes of brilliance with his speed through the neutral zone and an ability to jell on the power play.

In fact, neither player has had any real trouble adapting with their line mates, which was a preseason concern. As well, young guns Fedor Tyutin and Dan Girardi have really established themselves as top defensmen on this team and will continue to exceed the other pairings.

However, at 1 - 1 the Rangers have shown some disturbing trends as well. First and foremost is the lack of defensive responsibility and overall chemistry by the defense. Marc Staal has played well in the offensive zone, but has been out of position in his own end and unable to develop any chemistry with either Jason Strudwick or Paul Mara. This lack of positioning and stepping on each other's toes have resulted in some ugly goals against.

At the same time, the usually stellar pairing of Marek Malik and Michal Rozsival have really been unable to find each other in the defensive end or cover their positioning properly.

On the entire defensive front, the Rangers haven't been able to get a decent break out yet. The passes don't click and often results in a turnover at or near the blue line. This lack of defensive confidence has forced the offense to come back and support far too deep leaving the opposing defense exposed. Even worse, the team just collapses near their own goal line and isn't sure of each other's assignments.

Simplicity should be the key here, but it hasn't. Even though the offense has been good in the offensive end, they are ignoring simplicity as well. There are far too many forced passes and fancy attempts at passes. While this may be a testament to the fun that the players are having at a high level, it ultimately isn't resulting in any goals, which should be the result.

Instead, turnovers and ugly missed opportunities have been abundant. This has even carried over into the power play, which has a lot of nice puck movement, but no point presence or shots. Passes are nice, but there is no shooting and not enough pucks getting to the net. With the addition of Drury, the Rangers have someone willing to get to the net hard, but it has yet to be utilized.

It is still way too early to make too many judgments, but if these trends continue it is going to be a long season and an overall roller coaster ride.
