Will the Rangers trade Chris Kreider?

Previous Polls

Per Elliot Friedman of Sportsnet:

Prior to the December 1st deadline, the Oikers apparently tried again to move Jesse Pujljujarvi, and the Rangers were reportedly one of the teams interested.

The trade would have involved Lias Andersson going the other way, but ultimately they could work out a deal.

Igor Shesterkin 2/24
Suffered a rib fracture in car accident Sunday night, and will be reevaluated in two weeks.
Tony DeAngelo 2/19
Expected to be in line-up tonight against the Blackhawks
Igor Shesterkin 2/19
Will start in goal tonight
Micheal Haley 2/14
Scheduled for surgery and could miss the remainder of the season

After several disappointing performances, the Rangers returned to the basics of hockey and came away with a dominating 4-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Henrik Lundqvist returned to the line-up to stop all 18 shots he faced, while Scott Gomez reunited with Jaromir Jagr and Martin Straka to produce three of the Rangers' four goals.

The defense was again stifling, with the Penguins recording just five shots on goal through the first forty minutes of the game, while giving up three goals to the Rangers.

Turning Point
With the game 2-0, Sidney Crosby broke in two on one to the Rangers net. Crosby was unable to handle the pass cleanly and Lundqvist was able to get over and stop the redirection off of the skate to keep the Rangers perfect on the defensive side.

With Jaromir Jagr struggling, Tom Renney finally decided enough was enough and made a bold move to rearrange three lines in the hope of getting his star player producing offensively. In hindsight the move looks like genius, with the trio combining for three goals, and looking dangerous from the very first shift. Scott Gomez in particular, looked more confident than in his previous stint with Jagr, a point that both players made in the after match interviews.

The line of Dawes, Drury and Shanahan did not contribute as much, though Drury looked more dangerous than he has in recent weeks, and picked up a goal by standing in front of the net on the power play. Nigel Dawes has been quiet in his return to the line-up, perhaps as a result of the coach's request for him to be better in his own zone.

The line of Prucha, Duninsky and Callahan showed some energy at time, but like the Drury line, seldom looked as if they would be a scoring threat...something they will need to address if the Rangers hope to get their offense going.

As impressive as the top line was, it was also pleasing to see the return of the fourth line as an effective line. With Ryan Hollweg returning after a one game stint on the sidelines, the trio basically shutout their more vaunted opponents. Hollweg was a much more noticeable player in particular, getting back to the type of game that he's known for.

After one game up at forward, Jason Strudwick returned to the blueline and forced Marek Malik to once again take a seat on the sidelines. The defense as a whole were methodical if not overwhelming. On the few occasions that the Penguins looked as if they might be getting an opportunity to attack, the Rangers recovered through a sliding block or a stick check.

Marc Staal had a particularly solid game, and also contributed to Martin Straka's goal with the shot that was ultimately tipped by the Penguins netminder.

The forwards also worked hard to get back and support their defensemen, by providing outlet pass options, and by providing back pressure on the Penguins offense.

There was little for Lundqvist to do through the first forty minutes with just five shots heading his way. Still Lundqvist had to be sharp on a two on one breakaway that ended up with Sidney Crosby deflecting a puck off his skate onto the net. The third period saw more action almost immediately, but Lundqvist was up to the task, and made sure that the Penguins would not get a second chance at a rebound shot through the final 20 minutes.

Lundqvist ended up with the first star of the game, but certainly benefited form a smothering Rangers defense, and a Penguins team that looked unlikely to force the issue with the Rangers.

Special Teams
The power play still has a lot of work to do, but they did go 2 for 7 on the night. Scott Gomez scored his goal when a cross crease pass deflected in off of the goaltender Danny Sabourin, while Chris Drury's came just as a five on three expired. The Rangers failed to get a shot though on their first three attempts.

On the PK, the Rangers went a perfect 5 for 5 and kept the Penguins from registering a shot in their first two attempts.

Milestones and Notes
The Rangers extended their winning streak against the Penguins to three straight games this season. The Rangers lost the first game 1-0, but have won all three matchups since.

Henrik Lundqvist has set a new career high for shutouts, with his 6th of the season, surpassing his total of five set last year. Lundqvist also moved into a tie with Gilles Villemure with his 13th career shutout as a Ranger. Although it'll be difficult, Lundqvist is on pace to eclipse John Ross Roach's record of 13 shutouts in a season, set back in the 1928-29 season.

Michal Rozsival set a career high with three assists in the game, while Colton Orr had a surprisingly productive night in terms of shots on goal. Orr recorded three shots, taking his season total to eleven.

The Rangers set a season low for shots against in the second period, allowing just two for the entire twenty minutes, and allowing just five for the first two periods combined.

Scott Gomez recorded the first goal of the game for the fifth time this year. The goal ultimately ended up being the game winner, his second since coming to the Rangers.

Greg Moore was sent down again, and Al Montoya was called up briefly, before returning to Hartford after it was clear that Lundqvist would be able to play.

Injury Notes
Sean Avery remains out for at least another week according to coach Tom Renney. Avery has resumed skating, but still has some pain in his hand. Marcel Hossa sat out his second game as he recovers from the flu.

Starting Lines
Straka - Gomez - Jagr
Dawes - Drury - Shanahan
Prucha - Dubinsky - Callahan
Orr - Betts - Hollweg

Sean Avery - Injured (hand)
Marcel Hossa - Illness (flu)
Marek Malik - Healthy Scratch
