RUMOR MILL

Wednesday - June 26th

Elliot Friedmman of Sportsnet, reports that the Avalanche weren't willing to include the 16th overall pick to the Rangers in exchange for Chris Kreider.

Wonder who else wasn't willing to include a first rounder for him. Part of the problem of course is his UFA status next year, and then the expansion draft after that.

Where is Everyone?

The Rangers boxscore attendance for each home game has read to be 18,200(sold out). For all that are at the games or watching on tv, it is obvious that there are roughly 1,000-3,000 empties on any given night. Granted that these seats have already been sold to season ticket holders(I am 500+ on the waitlist), but the team has to feel it in concession sales. The Rangers are at the top of the division in points at this point, so all watching have for the most enjoyed the results on the ice.

Out on the Island, the Isles have again had trouble reviving the fanbase of their championship years. The Islanders average 80% of a full arena this season, in the soon to be replaced Nassua Coliseum. The owner Wang has been trying to get the new arena started, but politics on Long Island have been a huge problem. NHL Commish Bettman has finally become involved, with the start of the new aena now becoming a reality. Injuries to their franchise goalie has hurt some of the following but winning will bring more out to see the youth that are on the ice this year, with a blend of veteran leadership.

Newark is a total different story. They average 79%(not including Nov. 5th game which looks empty) and that is with a state of the art arena, their goalie about to break the all-time record for wins(until his injury), and they finally spent big money this offseason on bringing back Rolston and Holik. The Devils have also tried many price breaks and gimmicks to bring in fans. They offer many price breaks , such as $65 ticketsprice range for 2 tickets for only $40.00, $65.00 for $28.00 each , $65.00 and $30.00 each. Even with these huge discounts they can't draw people to buy tickets. The devils are refusing to pay the Newark Housing Authority, owners of the Prudential Arena, the rent that they owe them. They have STILL not recieved the Certificate of Occupancy due to a problem with the fire supression system which requires that Newarks Bravest to get paid to protect all attending. They could only sign retreads,(nobody likes injuries)but these problems I predicted back in the preseason and devils fans cried. Oh well.

The NHL hired ex-Rangers beat writer John Delepina to work in their marketing/advertising office and his hands are full with the economy at this time. The Metro teams need to do better to get people in the seats even though some of the seats are already sold. Throughout the whole NHL, the problem is apparent. When you see Hockeytown with so many empties, that says volumes.
