Even though winning is the cure all of problems, the Rangers have 2 HUGE rumors hanging over this team. As they sit atop the Eastern Conference with 23 points at 11-4-1, the Rangers still need help on the power play along with 1 more top flight forward. Since the start of the season, the Rangers have sent down to their AHL affiliate Hartford the Korpedo-Lauri Korpikoski. Also on wing the Rangers have put Patrick Rissmiller through waivers(he went unclaimed) and he still is with the team on the roster. That would free up over 2 million in cap space for a move to be made or they can even make another roster move to even free up more space. The Rangers would most likely move either Prucha(1.6 mil) or Dawes($587,500-cap friendly) as both are the same type of player. Maloney in Phoenix and Davidson in St. Louis have expressed interest in Prucha, along with other teams.Kevin Lowe,GM in Edmonton, has inquired about Dawes.
All summer long, loyal Brendan Shanahan has waited for the Rangers to figure out how to fit him to the roster. Sather has asked for more extensions to Shanny that the Devils have asked the Newark Housing Authority on paying it's rent. Shanny seems to have finally moved on from the Rangers, after rumors have him at around $1 million cap hit, and nobody could blame him. Shanahan was a Ranger that served an important role. His leadership kept Avery under control and Jagr happy. He agreed to accept a lesser role(3rd line duties--and power play duties). With Shanny the lines would be Naslund--Dury--Zherdev/Dawes-Gomez-Callahan/Voros-Dubinsky-Shanahan/ Sjostrom-Betts-Orr.
This has been the summer of Sundin rumors. Sundin is a force down the middle and a very well respected player. Sather had surrounded Jagr with Chechz and if he follows that thought process, this seems the move most likely. Sather would like to surround King Henrik with Swedes. He already has added Naslund and Sjostrom and reports leaked this summer of Sundin and Naslund wanting to play somewhere together. Adding Sundin would make the lines most likely Naslund-Sundin-Zherdev/Drury-Gomez-Callahan/Voros-Dubinsky-Dawes/Sjostrom-Betts-Orr. That actually would put the Rangers as the front runner for Lord Stanley. But it might not help in the locker room. The team seems to be a cohesive unit at this time. BUT, it could also bring about a healthy competition between the lines, which would be up to coach Renney to control.
So, as rumors fly about these 2 great players wanting to come to New York and that the Rangers are trying to bring them along, everyone can argue which choice would be better. We will all see soon if bringing in Sundin, Shanahan or standing pat with this team that is in 1st place is what Sather will choose. Whatever it is, it needs to happen soon as it seems like it is actually starting to affect the team. After a 10-2-1 start, the team has somewhat stumbled with 2 straight losses that the team just seemed to lose focus. They responded last night with a nice win over Tampa Bay 5-2 with our new leadership leading the way. Captain Drury had a hat trick while The King played great between the pipes as usual. Voros did his Avery impersonation(at 2.875 million less) that added life to the Rangers and the Garden Faithful. The Rangers played with a sense of confidence and control of a team without questions.
I have always stated I like the youth movement and hope that the Rangers stand pat, but we will find out if Sather can help himself. When 2 future Hall of Famers are knocking on your door, how do you seriously say No Thank You to BOTH? Especially when 1 has been loyal and a fan favorite and the other would help your franchise goalie feel invincible. This decision will make or breakthe season.
