RUMOR MILL

Sunday - January 10th

While the Rangers are monitoring the Pierre-Luc Dubois situation in Columbus, the cost for acquiring him would be high says Larry Brooks in theNew York Post.

He suggests it'll take someone like Kaapo Kakko, Alexis Lafreniere or K'Andre Miller...plus.

Sather Makes Moves To Fit Torts Game
Posted by Michael M. Ramos ≡ - March 5, 2009

Well, tonight is a new start for 3 players that will suit up in Blueshirts against the rival Islanders. Sather thinks these moves fit in well with the Torts version of Rangers hockey. Sather went out and brought in #80 Nik Antropov(6"6" 230 lbs), #53 Derek Morris(6' 221 lbs) and the return of fan favorite #16 Sean Avery(5'11" 195 lbs). Gone are Dawes(5'9" 193 lbs), Prucha(5-11 175 lbs), Kalinin(a soft 6"3" 210 lbs), a #2 pick and a conditional #4/#5 pick.

Derek Morris has said he is "ecstatic" to be a Ranger and Sather thinks he can resign him for and extension of $4 million per. Nik Antropov will have to be at his best as he probably will be competing with Zherdev to see which one will be resigned next year. Sean Avery will be with the Garden faithful for another 3 years(after this year) with a cap hit of only $1.938.(Sather had offered him over 3 mil last summer).

So not only did Sather make moves to help out this years team, but he also set up for next year also. If Andropov plays well enough to sign for $2.5-$3 million per, the Rangers can let someone else sign Zherdev for say between $2.6 to $3.9 million and the Rangers would recieve that teams 1st and 3rd round picks in the following years draft. These 2 players should push each other to be their best for the rest of the season.

The Rangers are better and stronger today than they were last week. The Rangers look ready for a STRONG and WILD playoff run.

Looking into the future, next years team could look like the following: with the Rangers meeting Dubi's and Korpikoski's 10% raises, exsisting contracts, and with probable signings. Of course, these are not the lines or positions.

Naslund(4 mil) Gomez(7.357 mil) Zherdev/Andropov(either at 3 mil)
Dubi(700,000) Drury(7.05 mil) Callahan(raise to 1 mil)
Avery(1.938 mil) Korpikoski(1.2 mil) Grachev(875,000)
Anisimov(822,000) Betts(raise to 1 mil) Orr(raise to 750,000)

Redden(6.5 mil) Rozsival(5 mil)
Girardi(1.55 mil) Staal(827,000)
Fahey(500,000) Morris(4 mil per deal)

The King (6.875 mil) Wiikman(543,000)

That would leave the Rangers at $1.213 UNDER THE CAP next year if it the CAP # stays the same.(or if either Redden/Rozsivaldon't get traded or bought out). It is expected to go up slightly due to season tickets being sold BEFORE the economy tanked. Naslund and his $4 mil come off the following year and by then, the Rangers expect someone from Hartford, college, or Jr's prospect to be ready by then. Sather may have just dodged a firing of his own.
