RUMOR MILL

Thursday - March 25th

With 18 days remaining until the NHL trade deadline, all is relatively quiet on the Rangers front.

Not unexpectedly, the Rangers are probably going to be minor players this time round, without much in the way of short term assets they would be looking to part with.

Clearly they would look at offers for those on short term or expiring contracts like Brendan Smith, Ryan Strome, Jack Johnson and perhaps the likes of Colin Blackwell.

With last night's 3-0 win, the Rangers have set themselves up with a shot at home ice advantage. The Rangers of course will have to win tonight, but they'll also need some help from the Flyers, who will need to beat New Jersey...in regulation preferrably.

The win also clinched a playoff spot for the third straight season, and at worst they can now finish only 7th.

Jaromir Jagr paced the Rangers' offense with two power play goals, while Henrik Lundqvist picked up his league leading 10th shutout, and first on the Island since January 21st, 2003 when Mike Dunham backstopped the Rangers to a 5-0 win.

Two members of the Wolf Pack have been selected for the AHL All-Star team. Andrew Hutchinson is a first team All-Star selection, while P.A. Parenteau has been selected for the second team.

The Darien Times has a story on home town favorite Hugh Jessiman and his recent Gordie Howe hat trick for the Wolf Pack.

Matt Zaba has www.arbiteronline.com/media/storage/paper890/news/2008/04/03/Sports/Zaba-Brings.Confidence.To.Steelheads-3302445.shtml" class="newslarge">played well since being moved to the Idaho Steelheads. Zaba completed his college career last year and signed a one year deal with the Rangers, initially starting out with the Checkers.

Speaking of the Checkers, they lost 6-4 last night to Columbia. The Checkers battled back from a 5-2 third period deficit to make a game of it, including a PP goal by Mike Busto, but they ended up falling short. Chris Holt stopped 23 of 28 shots faced.

The second round of the QMJHL playoffs gets under way tonight with both Ryan Hillier's Halifax Mooseheads and David Skokan's Rimouski Oceanic in action.

The NHL and ECHL wrap up their regular season action this weekend with playoffs scheduled to start next week.
