RUMOR MILL

Thursday - March 25th

With 18 days remaining until the NHL trade deadline, all is relatively quiet on the Rangers front.

Not unexpectedly, the Rangers are probably going to be minor players this time round, without much in the way of short term assets they would be looking to part with.

Clearly they would look at offers for those on short term or expiring contracts like Brendan Smith, Ryan Strome, Jack Johnson and perhaps the likes of Colin Blackwell.

When a 19 year old is point on powerplay and rush, alot of problems

Too Easy to play against
Posted by Michael M. Ramos ≡ 9:23:03 AM - January 30, 2010

This years version of the New York Rangers are way too easy to play against. Tortorella has installed a system that the GM hasn't given him the players for. Why hire this coach or why sign these players? Granted, some of the problem are players that were signed BEFORE this offseason(Redden, Rozsival, Drury) but this season Kotalik and Brashear, what the hell was Sather thinking? The Gaborik signing doesn't make sense either.

Last year the Rangers had a playmaker without a finisher and this year he signs a finisher with NOBODY to get him the puck. Mix this with alot of young players experiencing quality minutes and it is a recipe for disaster that we are now watching on the ice. The Rangers go into the offensive zone, bear to the left around the faceoff circle and ALWAYS first look back to the point. The other teams know to attack the point and have a 3 on 2 adavantage around the blueline. With a very young defense core along with 2 very bad veterans handling the point, this type of play is the disaster that Ranger fans are watching game in and game out.

The Rangers now actually have a core group of players that have come up through the system in Lundqvist, Staal, Girardi, Gilroy, Del Zotto, Dubinsky, Callahan, Anisimov. Prospal came to the Rangers to find his game after being bought out by Tampa Bay ONLY because he wanted to play for coach Torts. Gaborik is a world class player that followed the money. Avery also is refinding his game when allowed to have his leash removed. Lisin has speed but no finishing touch or sense of the team concept. Higgins is not a player for this system. Voros at least plays for the team and is best friends with Gaborik.

This years biggest mistakes by Sather were the heart and soul players. Brashear for Orr was devastating in the fact that a guy was signed that doesn't care about his fellow players and the fans despise since he doesn't do any fighting. When Lundqvist or Gaborik get banged into or forced into a fight, it is his JOB to do the same to the other goalie and star player to stop teams from doing this. He talks about a "code" but why are the Rangers the only team that lives by it? Kotalik was just a ridiculous signing. Nobody saw it coming and for a good reason, it never made sense. To overpay and give too many years for a "project", Sather was clearly not thinking. The powerplay specialist has been a liability from the start of the season and now $3 million is sitting on the bench. He was supposed to replace Zherdev? At least Zherdev had some upside in his skills. And letting Betts go for Boyle? I don't even wnat to touch that one.

So, somehow the Blueshirts still have a shot at the playoffs. That is a bad thing as Sather and the Dolans see a chance to make the playoff money and might get rid of some of the players that could get the Rangers out of this pathetic play to bring in a vet to assure the playoffs. The Dolans have spent money on the Knicks like drunkin sailors, so it is time to do the same for the Rangers now(they used to have a Rangers payroll of around $80 million in the past). Send Redden, Kotalik, Brashear, Rozsival, Drury, away or down to the minors. That would clear up almost $20 million and don't resign Higgins next year. Scrap the rest of this year and bring up Crowder(a big forward signed out of college for $975,000 1 year contract--why?), Corey Locke(leading scorer in Hartford), Grachev(get him NHL minutes and see if he is ready),Heikkenen(showed he could play NHL minutes and at least HITS players), Byers(who will stick up for Hank and Gaborik),and Sauer(another player that hits people).

This years version of the Rangers were expected to have ups and downs throughout this season because of all the players that have less that 3 years of NHL experience, BUT these LONG downs aren't acceptable. SATHER, make these moves happen and give the Captain C and Alternate A's to players that will play for the TEAM CREST and fans that spend alot of money to watch and fill the Garden seats on a nightly basis. Callahan is perfect because of his hard working approach to the game. The fans love Avery so give him and A also. Take the C away from Drury and give it to someone whom you plan on building this team around. It would seem that the players in contention would be Staal and Dubinsky.

The rumor mill is starting again as Calgary has been scouting the Rangers and the Pahnuef to NY makes no sense. Has anyone forgotten about sloppy seconds? The one rumor that DOES make sense is Lecavier because the Tampa team is being sold and he would like to be reunited with Prospal. This would make sense in Satherworld as he has a 10 year contract that pays him $10 million each for the next 7 years with a cap hit of $7 mil plus. That is a Dolan type contract.
