His drop on the depth chart made him trade worthy

Plus and MINUS of the 2010 Draft
Posted by Michael M. Ramos ≡ 10:41:49 AM - June 27, 2010

It is obvious that the thought of the Rangers organization going into the draft was to get BIGGER and tougher. Mission accomplished. Besides the #2 pick (at 5'9" 162) the Rangers picked 3 BIG and mean players that fill organizational needs. Add that to the trade of 2 time AHL all-star defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti to Carolina for this years 6th rounder(the Rangers picked Jesper Fasth with the pick) and a 2011 2nd round pick originally from Washington, and this years Rangers team is starting to take shape.

The Rangers were pushed around this season until the late season trade for Shelley and Prust(expect to see both free agents to be signed) due to the unforgiving release of Colton Orr and the signing of Dumbass Brashear. Expect alot of RFA playing in Hartford NOT be tendered as it seems Sather FINALLY is catching on to what the Rangers fans want. A quote by Gordie Clark, who runs the Rangers draft the past couple of years, in the Post writes something about how "Sather has the patience NOW". With Staal and Girardi expecting extensions this offseason, Sather is realizing he has to pay his OWN players and not to keep going out and getting everyone elses. Look for the Rangers to spend 7 mil per year for the 2 of them together(4 for Staal and 3 for Girardi)for at least 3 years. That will be less than $1 mil than AHL Redden will make by himself.

The Rangers surprised almost everyone by taking "THE UNDERTAKER" McIlrath at #10 overall. The talk on TSN and NHL network is that if the Rangers didn't take him with the #10 , he would have gone anywhere from 11-15. He is a 6'4" 212 lb, stay at home defenseman, and hopefully will fill the role that Buekaboom did for Leetch. Del Zotto and McIlrath will be on the blueline along with Staal for many years. Add Girardi,McDonagh, Gilroy, Valatenko, Sauer,Nyeri, and the rest, the Rangers seem to FINALLY have the pieces in place to stay within the organization and promote on defense.

Looking at this years draft, which includes 2 players that have already played for the Rangers, since we traded 2 picks for players, and it seems to be a good draft, maybe not as good as last year though(Kreider,Werek,Borque). The Rangers traded 2 picks in this years draft for 4th line center Boyle and backup goalie Johnson. This years picks were THE UNDERTAKER McIlrath, Christain Thomas(a small RW with great scoring touch--also son of Steve Thomas),Andrew Yogan(C/LW Rangers steal of the draft who was coached by ex-NHLer Robbie Ftorek),Jason Wilson(6-3 LW),Jesper Fasth(5-11 Swedish LW), and Randy McNaught(a 6-4 222 lb RW right out of the movie SLAPSHOT, could be Jody Shelley understudy).

Now that Sather seems committed to staying(except for 1 or 2 trades of prospects) within the organization, look for him to add more draft picks for next years draft as he did by getting Washingtons #2 for next year. He just can't help himself, as he will tender an offer sheet next summer to any of the following: Stamkos(he is still pissed about the "handshake deal" with Tampa ownership that Tampa backed out of,Parise(in my opinion a top 5 player in the NHL),Jeff Carter,Jack Johnson,Claude Giroux,Shea Weber, and/or Hedman(just to screw with Tampa ownership).

Rangers prospect camp starts Monday, so expect the McDonagh signing at anytime.
