RUMOR MILL

Thursday - March 25th

With 18 days remaining until the NHL trade deadline, all is relatively quiet on the Rangers front.

Not unexpectedly, the Rangers are probably going to be minor players this time round, without much in the way of short term assets they would be looking to part with.

Clearly they would look at offers for those on short term or expiring contracts like Brendan Smith, Ryan Strome, Jack Johnson and perhaps the likes of Colin Blackwell.

Reports today that the Rangers and Marc Staal are again talking

Staal And Rangers Talking
Posted by Toby Ivey ≡ 5:32:09 PM - September 8, 2010

With just nine days to go until the Rangers open training camp, it looks as if we finally have movement on the Marc Staal contract front. Mike Brophy of Sportsnet reported earlier today that the two sides are closing in on a deal. Various Ranger beat writers followed up the report to say that while nothing appears imminent, a deal could be forthcoming soon.

If they do manage to get Staal locked into a deal, it'll almost certainly spell the end for Wade Redden as a Ranger this season. The Rangers are already over the regular season cap number, and would need to send Redden to Hartford, trade him or loan him to Europe in order to comply with the league mandated cap.

Still, they have until the end of training camp to make a decision, and there's always a possibility of a long term injury that would free up some space to accommodate his hefty contract.

Gaborik and Christensen join informal skates
Marian Gaborik shook off some jet lag to join the informal skates at the MSG training facility. Erik Christensen also made his first appearance, leaving just Alexander Frolov - expected in town Friday, and Staal as the only two regulars who haven't been on the ice yet.

Gaborik was happy to talk to the beat writers and gave his take on the additions of Derek Boogaard and Alexander Frolov, calling Boogaard the "best at what he does".

GM Glen Sather apparently asked for input from his star right winger before going after Boogaard this summer, and got the thumbs up from the rugged forward's former team mate.

For his part Erik Christensen was pleased to get a two year deal, saying he's normally a high strung kind of guy, and is happy that he doesn't have to worry about next season. Christensen also went onto say that he appreciated playing under Tortorella and that after the coach had yelled at you for ten minutes, he'd come back and talk in a more constructive manner.

New numbers for new players
A combination of Jim Cerny and Steve Zipay tweeted several new numbers to be worn by the Summer's acquisitions.

#12 - Todd White
#13 - Tim Kennedy
#31 - Alexander Frolov
#43 - Martin Biron
#44 - Steve Eminger
#94 - Derek Boogaard
