It seems as if the Rangers are finally done trying out centers to play with a healthy Gaborik within the Rangers system and realize that at this point, it's time to make a move. Anisimov, Stepan, and Christensen have all been given a chance without a consistent solution. The Rangers are in talks with a couple of teams, but the teams with the best options for the Rangers are Tampa Bay, Dallas, Minnesota, and San Jose. Some teams might want roster players and others are looking for picks.
The player who the Rangers will easily make a play for if he makes it to this summer will be Steven Stamkos who will be 21 in February, is 6'1" and 196 lbs. He is best friends with Rangers defenseman Mike DelZotto and is an elite scoring center. He is easily a top 10 player in the league and will probably earn an offer sheet of 10 years at an average of 8 million per. If the Rangers would be able to pull off this miracle(which could actually happen since Tampa can not match that offer sheet with all of their outstanding contracts), it would cost the Rangers their next 4 #1 picks. To get a player of Stamkos' level to play with Gaborik, it fits into everything that the Rangers are doing. He fits into the young Rangers core and already has chemistry with his best friend DelZotto. The Rangers last year had a handshake deal with one of the two owners at the time that would have sent Grachev,Dubinsky, and DelZotto with a prospect for Stamkos coming to the Garden.
The in-season favorite move seems to be Brad Richards of the Dallas Stars. Bruce Garroich in Ottawa,Larry Brooks in New York, amongst others are all reporting that once Dallas is ready to move Richards that the Rangers are the favorite place for Richards to land. Richards will turn 31 in May, is 6-0 and 196 lbs also. Richards is an intelligent scoring center which is what the Rangers are looking for at this time. The rumors have the Rangers sending Rozsival, Anisimov,Prust, and a pick to have Richards setting up Gabby. The problem would be getting Richards to signing an extension. This trade would give the Rangers an inside track before the July 1st auction for his services. It seems that he would likely be worth alittle raise to 8 million per for maybe 5 years.
The newest rumor going around is the Rangers are talking to San Jose which actually goes back to this summer. It seemed at the time to be for Heatley but now all signs are pointing to Pavelski. He will still be 26 at the end of this season and is an American player that Tort's likes from having him on Team USA. Pavelski stands at 5-11" and weighs in at 195. He still is under contract for 3 more years after this season at 4 million per. Pavelski, along with Richards, has a good relationship with the Rangers coach and is another great playmaker that fits into the Rangers system. Going to San Jose would be Gilroy,Anisimov, and a pick which might be the best situation for the Rangers.
The most dangerous and the one that the Rangers scorer Gaborik is asking for, is for the Wild's Pierre Marc Bouchard. PMB will turn 27 in April but only played 1 game last season due to concussion problems. He is just coming back this season and the Rangers are keeping a very close eye on how he is doing at this time. Bouchard is only 5-10" and 173 lbs which leads to the reasoning for his past injuries. He also comes with a pricetag of 2 more years at 4.08 cap hit. He would probably cost the Rangers the least due to the high risk of a reaccuring injury possibility. It would cost the Rangers a 3rd liner like Fedetenko and a pick or a prospect and a pick.
The Rangers could just stand pat and wait till next season and hope that Stepan will grow into the role or that Werek or Grachev can make the next step to fill the role. The Rangers need of the #1`center is clear and that will hopefully be the final piece that will make the Rangers a perennial Stanley Cup contender.
The Rangers #1 plan at this time is Stamkos this summer but only if Sather can help himself drom going after Richards and going for it all this year.
