RANGERS (34-24-4) at CANADIENS (29-27-9)

7 p.m. ET; TSN2, RDS, MSG 2, NHL.TV

The Game

The New York Rangers seek a season-high fifth straight win and their ninth straight road victory when they face the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Thursday.

New York is 8-1-0 in its past nine games and enters play Thursday four points behind the Columbus Blue Jackets for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference.

Carey Price will make his 11th straight start for Montreal, which is seven points behind the Toronto Maple Leafs for third place in the Atlantic Division.

The Canadiens are 2-4-2 in their past eight games after going 7-2-0 in their previous nine.

Players to watch

Rangers forward Mika Zibanejad has an eight-game point streak (seven goals, seven assists) and has scored a goal in five straight games, one short of the longest in the NHL this season.

Canadiens forward Max Domi has five points in a three-game point streak (two goals, three assists).

They said it

"You're in this dogfight, this playoff race, and I think every team is trying to create that same mentality. Regardless of the venue, regardless of your opponent, boy, every shift is tooth and nail, and every inch of ice matters, and it's a great time of year." -- Rangers coach David Quinn

"Obviously that's a good team coming in. They've got a lot of talented players and it's going to be our job to not give them too much. We've had good starts at home, we're just going to have to play a full 60 (minutes)." -- Canadiens forward Nick Suzuki

Rangers projected lineup

Chris Kreider -- Mika Zibanejad -- Filip Chytil

Artemi Panarin -- Ryan Strome -- Jesper Fast

Status report

Buchnevich, a forward, will miss a second straight game after he and Shesterkin, a goalie, were injured in a car accident Sunday. "He's getting back to his old self and he'll be back on the ice soon," Quinn said of Buchnevich. … Drouin, a forward, won't play after re-aggravating an ankle injury. … Ouellet skated and is continuing to progress through concussion protocol. "He's getting closer to being able to return to play," Canadiens coach Claude Julien said of the forward who has missed the past two games.

Stat pack

Panarin has a 10-game point streak (five goals, nine assists). … Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks (Nov. 7-17), Domi (Dec. 19-31), and Sebastian Aho of the Carolina Hurricanes (Jan. 31-Feb. 11) each scored in six straight games earlier this season.

This is the game that I thought would be a problem this week. Not because the Habs are a better team. It's just that strange crap happens in Montreal. This building has been tough on the Rangers, and Price can steal games.

... and here we go, bad bounce off of Fox's skate into the net.

Rangers had better pick up the physical game a bit against the Habs, who can skate but can't play as well if they have to keep their heads up.

Habs holding and hooking as the Rangers get some pressure and a chance or two, no calls of course. Habs have to draw blood or kidnap somebody to get a minor penalty.

Nice shift by the big boys, although down 2-1 the Rangers might have better options than Fast with Panarin and Zib.

Think Panarin Strome Kakko will be a line of the future.

Don't know how you blame Ruff for the amount of chances we give up. It's a very young team with two stiffs on defense (Staal and Smith). The forwards have to held accountable too. Look at Chytil's giveaway last night. Inexperience. If anything, Ruff deserves credit for the amount of offense that comes from our defense. He's always been a proponent of defensemen that join the rush and help create chances. He's let talented players like Fox and TonyD loose instead of holding them back.

That's part of the problem. He should be putting defense first with young players. Not offense. The natural talent of some of the forwards on this team will games if you keep the puck out of your net. During this streak the goalies have basically stood on their heads. It's rare to see your goalies do that this long. Eventually, it comes crashing down. You can't keep giving up these chances. It's happened almost all season.

Its the National Hockey League. Other teams get chances. Look how many bell ringers Price made. Quinn, Ruff, and the other Assistants have done a magnificent f'ing job. You probably want them fired. They are not going anywhere, this is who the Rangers are NOW, they have played their azzes of to get there. The last couple games your starting to see some real good play coming from the lines three and four, and Chytil's line is really coming on, and is soon going to be contributing offense on a more regular basis. Its called gelling after you put the work in as the season develops, and its not some fluke, it's because of great coaching.

Exactly. The youngest team in the league also happens to be the best (or second best) team in the league since January 7th. Give credit to where it's due. Sure they are talented young players, but they are playing and winning as a team. Who has them playing as a team?

If you're going to blame Ruff for the amount of chances they give up, then you have to credit him for the rapid development of Fox, Lindgren and D'Angelo. Of course, that's if you're gonna be objective about it.

In the last two games, against the Isles and Habs, the third and fourth lines have been huge. They've added goals, turned momentum around with strong forechecking and getting chances, and they've defensively responsible for the most part. But as far as this discussion is concerned, the Rangers don't win those games without the offense contributed by Fox and D'Angelo. To say that they shouldn't be allowed to play their game and contribute offensively until they become shutdown defensemen is silly.

Let's also not overlook the job Quinn, Ruff and the other coaches have done with the special teams. Both the PP and the PK have dramatically improved from earlier this season. Since January 1st the PP is among the top 5 in the league and #6 overall right now.

Oh, and one last thing to really trigger some folks: Smith played a great game last night.

Smith played a great game last night.

Well said!!!!

Even Staal has had some good games lately. Amazing what a player can accomplish under the right circumstances. AV can turn a d-man to trash in an instant.

Nonsense. Take off the homer glasses. The Rangers have been among the worst teams in hockey allowing shots against. Usually a good amount of scoring chances each games. If you can't admit that, you aren't able to be objective on your team.
