Gartner - 2012-01-02 12:57 PM

Staal is back today!!!!

Didn't BM tell us that it will happen on this day like weeks ago? Wow!

At least 2-3 weeks ago, Staal himself said that he wouldn't rule out a return for the Winter Classic

All I know is that even in Florida game, the commentators were saying that Staal most likely won't be able to play in the winter classic. They said that he is close to returning but not that close.

The announcers rarely know anything. They just talk to fill up airspace. Beat writers generally have the best pulse on a team. Announcers just know names and numbers off the roster.

Bob Costas sad.

Not even Philly and New York, or HBO, or two of the best teams in the NHL could save the 2012 Winter Classic from being the lowest rated yet.

The overnight ratings via Sports Business Daily and Puck The Media:

Winter Classic Overnights

2008, Pittsburgh vs. Buffalo, 1/1/08: 2.6
2009, Detroit vs. Chicago, 1/1/09: 2.9
2010, Philadelphia vs. Boston, 1/1/10: 2.6
2011, Washington vs. Pittsburgh, 1/1/11: 2.8
2012, NY Rangers vs. Philadelphia, 1/2/12: 2.4

not everyone had the day off yesterday. The sole reason it was lower rated than the others.

The fact that a lot of people didn't get Jan 2nd off (myself included) had a lot to do with the lower ratings. It amounted to a big game in the middle of a workday for me and most people I know. From a ratings standpoint, they would've been better off playing on Saturday IMO.

Also, there was a Triple OT College Bowl game thriller going on at the same time. Some of the less casual hockey fans were probably watching that instead of the Winter Classic.

Michigan State held on! I was in between watching both. Missed most of 2nd due to this.

Not to mention January 1st (national hangover day) is one of the biggest TV days of the year

2.4 rating wasn't too bad, considering most people went back to work.

NHL dropped the ball making it Jan 2nd from the start. It should have been kept a new years day tradition, but they didn't want to compete with Sunday football.

Next year, New Years Day falls on a Tuesday, so I'm sure they will go back to that.

That's what I figured. The time change & college football.

If they would have Played this game on the 1st it would have had less viewers. expesially in NY and Northern NJ Football is still the primary sport in this area and they all would have watche dthe Jets loose or sit in front of there redzone and cry about there fantasy playoffs and it would not have been a good idea to try to compete with that

Also, for those that really enjoy outdoor hockey games (as I do), there will be a good college hockey game played at Cleveland's Progressive Field between Ohio State and Michigan. It's on January 15 at 5PM, and will be shown on TV on FS Detroit+ (DirecTV channel 664). Also, the AHL matchup, following the Winter Classic will also be on TV, and it will be Adirondack and Hershey on January 6 at 7PM on CSN Philadelphia and on January 7 at 4PM on the NHL Network.

Plus, there will be a Hockey East event at Fenway again, and that will be shown on NESN on January 7 starting at 4PM, with a doubleheader.

Sather said that the Rangers are going to win the winter classic and they did. People called him a stand up comedian for that and now he looks like a genius.

I'm sorry, genius and Sather don't belong in the same sentence, actually the same universe.

What was he going to say -- We are going to lose?

He could of just say nothing, nobody asked his opinion on this. I think he took a 50/50 chance to shine his ego. But I do agree with you that he is far from being a genius.

WC for me was not that great a game. I thought the Rangers looked slow to the puck in the 1st and most of the 2nd. They had absolutly no forecheck during that same time frame of the game. The ice looked chippy even though most player interviews indicated the ice was "better than they thought it would be" what ever that means. Weird bad bounces off the end boards and glass where a plenty. I could tell that the depth perception was weird for both goalies. The crowd being that far away from the ice was well..... Weird. And Torts was right on by screaming about the "disgusting" ref job in the 3rd. Are you kidding me....... ofcourse Torts had to apoligize and will most likly be fined for telling the truth.
Hey look I dont mean to "pee in Buttmans punchbowl"....er.. maybe I do
I am absolutly possitive Torts and the Rangers are glad this is over, I know I am.

Ok, so with that all said... Does anyone have alink to episode 4 of 24/7.... That for me was the only bright spot of this whole thing, HBO did a fantastic job in my opinion

Loved the part where the Philly players were talking bout doing the Anisimov sniper move if they scored. Then picking who fights who when the assumed brawl ensues. Funny hearing the first guy call Hagelin, then no one wanted Boyle

That was a great 4th and final episode.... Boy... it would've sucked if the Rangers lost... But they didn't, and it was pretty damn exciting to watch HBO's footage of the game... It wasn't the best Rangers game of the year, I think the slow ice played to Phillies advantage, but still the Rangers found a way to win... horrible calls and all....

I thought last year HBO was going to do a run for the playoffs. Although it tough which teams to follow as it is a crap shoot.

Would love to see HBO do something for the entire season with one team.

The Flyers may have won the trash talking, but our guys won what was important.

Ironic that Avery's last recorded words as a Ranger were whether there was unlimited orange juice with breakfast

Thought 24/7 was really great. Players and coaches are humans off the ice and warriors on ice

Sounds like the next Winter Classic will be at Michigan's Big House stadium in Ann Arbor, with the NHL looking to set an attendance record for a hockey game with 115,000: http://www.kuklaskorner.com/index.php/tmr/comments/winter_classic_b... Why couldn't the Rangers participate in something awesome like that, not that our participation in this past WC wasn't cool, but this has the possibility of being the best one yet.
