Tanner Glass placed on waivers
October 20th, 2015 12:09 pm
The Rangers have placed Tanner Glass on waivers. (Elliotte Friedman)

Glass has played in two games so far this season with the Rangers, averaging 11:29 per game, a plus one, 4 PIM, 2 shots and 11 hits.

He is signed for this year and next year with a cap hit of $1.45 million.

If he clears waivers and is sent to Hartford the Rangers will have a $500,000 cap charge.

Putting Glass in Hartford would leave the Rangers with 22 players on the roster and $1,100,500 in cap space. (Hockey’s Cap)

Smart move from, if nothing else, a cap standpoint.

The way Fast has been playing I don't see any reason to keep Glass in the lineup. I get that they have different skill sets but Fast is a much better hockey player and that's what we need at this point. If they feel the need to insert more grit into the lineup, McIlrath is ready and waiting. And the way Boyle has been playing I'd encourage them to make this move sooner rather than later.

Keep in mind though he hasn't been assigned to Hartford. There's still a possibility that he stays on NYR roster, cap hit and all.

Which would pretty much be putting Glass' feelings before the team's best interests.

Without recall waivers the only correct move it to reassign him if he is not picked up.

Glass gets paid the same regardless. If there is ever really a need they can call him back up without waivers. Rangers gain cap flexibility by reassigning him. There is no reason to not do so other than they do not want to ask him to report.

This had to happen. At some point the Rangers will have to call up a d man for injuries and they had no cap space to fit either Diaz or Skjei.

If they were worried about Glass' feelings then they wouldn't have waived him in the first place?

You honestly believe Boyle is going to waive that clause to be shipped off to Columbus?

If you were Boyle, would you rather play in Columbus, or sit in the press box at MSG?

I'm not saying it's going to happen, but all you have to do, is to make the alternative worse.

Plus Boyle did not get a 2nd chance to play for Torts yet, which seems unfair.

If we're going to reunite a defenseman with Torts you'd be better off making it Girardi. I'd rather his 5 year contract go away than Boyle. Though if you could ditch Boyle too that would be fine as well.

If the Rangers had any better right side option than Girardi I could understand that, but they do not.

They'd need to replace those minutes, many of which are played against the elite forwards, many on the PK as well, not an easy task. Even if they use Klein as the top RHD which they are somewhat now, without Girardi it would be Boyle, McIlrath or Diaz trying to play where Girardi used to be and that seems like it could turn out badly.

Have you watched Girardi this year? It's going badly with him. And unlike those BSB people who think Boyle is somehow great, (they really do and even think his rush up ice was great last night) I don't want him getting those minutes. I actually don't want him getting any minutes. But if you think Girardi is somehow helping this team in any way I'm not sure what you're watching. Yes McIlrath right now is a better option and I wasn't really high on him coming out of camp. I thought he looked good enough to stick as the extra and that's about it. I only lend so much weight to advanced stats (and Girardi's are pretty much the worst in the league) but he fails the eye test too. Anyone that plays against him can go around him at will. It seems like every pass goes to his defense partner around the back of the net or to an opposing forwards against the boards. Those are the only 2 options with him.

No I have not watched at all.

So your solution would be to play McIlrath on the 2nd pair?

Would be one option. Diaz also gives us another RH option. I'm not high on Boyle/Diaz but they at least create offensive chances to ho along with defensive mistakes.

I also don't think these options are better than Girardi. I'd certainly explore a trade but he has a NMC for this year. So I doubt it would get done anyway. 7 games is also premature to start looking at advanced stats.

Also this is a good time to point out that I suggested McD-Klein and other pairs much earlier. Glad AV listened.

I agree it's too early for advanced stats this year but honestly you have 3 years of dreadful stats to look at. I also don't go just by advanced stats. I hate those guys that insist those stats tell you everything. But he looks bad stats or no stats. I told you what I would have done in the offseason. There was a guy to be had for cheap.

I’d take him over Carey, especially if Calgary split his contract.

It’s better the Rangers didn’t do nothing. And it’s more a situation where they want to protect coach from himself and prevent him from playing Glass in very questionable defensive situations.
