After consulting with his agents Pete Fish and Pete Donatelli today, Jimmy Vesey has decided to sign with NYR. #VeseyWatch is over.

"I predict he signs with the Rangers.... as Herb Brooks once said.... "Great Moments are Born from Great Opportunity"....There is no greater opportunity for an NHL rookie player than to play in "The Worlds Most Famous Arena"...

What we learned from Jimmy Vesey and Jeff Gorton...
Aug 19 | 9:27PM

Rangers GM Jeff Gorton and newly acquired forward Jimmy Vesey spoke to the media on a conference call Friday night following the announcement of Vesey's signing. Here's what we learned from the call...

•Vesey said his list included eight teams, and while the decision was tough, he felt comfortable with the Rangers' pitch. "It was definitely a tough decision, but myself, my agent and my family were very impressed with the Rangers in our meeting."
•Vesey added he was impressed with Gorton, coach Alain Vigneault and particularly Chris Drury, who was added last year as director of player development. "Chris Drury was the one I was really impressed with during the meeting with the Rangers."
•Vesey said he tries to play a mix between a power and skilled forward.
•Although he tried to stay off social media all week, Vesey said he got texts from friends and family about the celebrity pitches on Twitter.
•Gorton said the Rangers had a lot to sell to Vesey, including being an Original Six franchise in a city like New York.
•Gorton said he did not want to commit Vesey to a particular line or spot just yet.
•Gorton added that he likes the way Vesey can score consistently: "I think that he's got ability to score. ... He can come in and play."

Of course now all the anti-NY hating tools out there are bashing Vesey. He's not that good. He'll suck. Typical.

He's not going to come in and win a Calder. Hell, Buchnevich may be a better winger than Vesey.... which is just fine by me.... but he should slide in as a third line LW pretty seamlessly.

And what that does, is not only add a guy who can produce, but gives The Rangers depth. Grabner is a good player, but should slot in to the 4th line, now. That adds extra scoring to the 4th line

Grabner Lindberg Fast

All 3 of those players played a top 9 role last year, and are solid defensively. Great speed on the wings, this should be a really good 4th line.

And if Kevin Hayes ups his game, and has chemistry with Vesey

Vesey Hayes Miller

Would make a very skilled young 3rd line with good size and speed. All three players fit the mold that Vesey describes himself as, part power forward part skilled winger.

That's really nice bottom 6 depth. I'm pretty excited to see this offense work.

Expectations are going to be too high for Vesey. Especially after all the hype. I'm all for the signing but he's not a top 6 winger in his rookie year, if ever. If the Rangers play it smart they have a good two-way top 6 with a good mix of talent -

Kreider Stepan Nash
Miller Zibanejad Zucc

Then a third line that can play sheltered minutes and has some offensive punch,

Vesey Hayes Buchnevich

And a fourth line to eat minutes and do fourth line stuff

Lindberg (IR) /Fast/Grabner/Jooris

With scratches/injury callups, Gerbe, Hrivik, Glass

Not terrible. It's the defense that has me concerned.

Putting the two rookies together makes me very nervous. One of Vesey or Buchnevich should be given a shot to play in the top 6. 2nd line 5 on 5 minutes. Offensive zone starts. Playing with skilled vets, and attempt to maximize their potential.

They need to roll 4 lines. I don't like the idea of sheltering a line.

They would be rolling 4 lines. Sheltering refers to trying to get a favorable matchup through QoC and zone starts.

I've been saying for years the beauty of drafting McIlrath was that you could play him a regular shift on defense, not have to put a goon on the 4th line which ruins any offense they might have. The Rangers don't have a power first line. They need 4 lines that can chip in on offense. Sadly, our thickheaded coach wants a defense that is made up entirely of candyazzes who can't clear the crease. So he continues to put that scrub Glass on the 4th line.

This is silly. "Far" exceeded your expectations? With the offense he is supposed to bring, and the icetime he is supposed to get.....35 is "far" exceeding your expectations? Then what are you expecting? 20 points? and that is what you are expecting?

Hayes got 45 points in his rookie year....same hype. I don't see why we would "expect" so much less from Vesey.

I am saying that "the offense he is supposed to bring" has been vastly overhyped. Hayes came from a much better division (HE vs ECAC) and stepped onto a President's Trophy winning team that ended with the second best offense in the league... In 2015-16 the team did worse and Hayes' numbers came right back down to earth. (Also check out his shooting percentage for the past two years to explain some of that difference too) The 2016-17 team that Vesey will start on will not come close to that level of offensive output.

With nothing but Vesey talk the past 2 months he's going to be overrated a bit. Nothing against the kid, love the signing, glad we picked up a young talent for cheap, I just don't expect that much out of his rookie season.

35 points is what Hagelin picked up on a Presidents Trophy team in 82 games - you expect more than that? We'll see I guess.

Yes, here we are and winning in spite of this. The Rangers have taken the 2016 SC Champs Penguins model and have run with it. Speed and skill up front, and a no name defense. Aside from Letang, can you name more than one other Penguin defender?

I could but your point stands, they have just one "name" defenseman. However the style of defense they have certainly contributed to their success last year. So much so that I thought the injury to Daley would have doomed them. The Daley trade last year was about the point that they were really able to turn everything around. I'd argue that in their current incarnation, Daley is as integral to their success as Letang is, despite Letang being leaps and bounds more talented.

The NHL is a copycat league and no doubt the Rangers (and others) are trying to replicate the Pens' success. Concerns with Girardi and Staal are still that they are not the most mobile of defenders. This is the same reason why "no name" Holden has at least held his own here. Even Kevin Klein looks a little clunky when you look at him next to McDonagh, Skjei, and Clendening.

It's working just fine now, and I'm not one to fix what ain't broke, but if we were able to trade for a solid skating top 4 defenseman that can play the right side, it would strengthen the chain significantly, especially considering that you run through defenseman in the playoffs due to injury.
