I'm curious what others on here think about keeping, a if not already, then soon to be a depreciating asset in Lundqvist. I'm not advocating dump him, but I'm probably more interested in what others think. He's got a well earned no move clause and I'm sure it would take some stickhandling to get him to accept a move. And it would have to be a perfect scenario for him to agree.
Can a organization afford to just let this guy retire, when a bounty of picks and prospects might be had, if it's done fairly soon. Can the Rangers replace what looks like a starter in Raanta if he gets scooped up in the expansion draft? They have some kids on the pipeline but most are a couple of years away.. I'm interested in hearing what others have to say.

He can't get taken by Vegas because he has to be protected.

Why Henrik Lundqvist will reclaim his Rangers throne
By Larry Brooks December 12, 2016 | 2:21am

The Rangers’ greatest vulnerability in the 2017 expansion draft is neither on defense nor up front, but rather in nets, where the club can protect only one goaltender — and is obligated to protect Henrik Lundqvist because of the no-move clause in his contract — and thus must leave Raanta available for claim by Vegas.

The last goalie controversy Rangers faced was Beezer/Richter.

This kind of thread pops up every time Lundqvist has a rough stretch.

After 11 full seasons of consistently stellar play, he gets the benefit of the doubt from me. Every goaltender goes through cold spells, even elite ones. His numbers through the AV years are spot on consistent even though they represent a slight dip in the defense-first Torts years.

He won't last forever, but I'll wait until he has a bad year before I even entertain this idea. So far this year he's been tracking exactly where he has for the last 3 years so I don't understand the knee jerk reaction to a few bad games.

How about a thread for Girardi, who has been declining for years?

I think as long as The Rangers are contending for The Division/Conference.... are among the top teams in the league.... you don't just trade Lundqvist.

This team has a shot to win a Cup.... about as good as any Rangers team we've seen since the lockout. Lundqvist deserves to be a part of that.

He gets better in the playoffs, historically, too.... He has another run or two in him.

Will he survive the length of his contract? That I don't know.... But by then Igor Shestyorkin should be just about done cooking in the KHL

22 wins in 30 games with a 94.3sv% and 1.51 GAA 8 shutouts..... Yeah, I know it's "only" the KHL, but this kid is good

You would expect a slow, gradual drop off these few next years, but man oh man this is bad. It is like he hit the wall & crashed & burned. The team is just not getting the goaltending needed to win games.

Eerily similar to what went on in Vancouver with Luongo.

Shesterkin has a three year contract in the KHL. Why he signed that is beyond me. That was stupid. He should have used common sense that Lundqvist's game was declining last year. It doesn't help as one poster said that our coach doesn't have a defensive system and doesn't value anybody who can cover players in the crease. The simple fact is that AV needs to change his system. He won't which is ultimately why he will get fired at the end of the season. Honestly, if Shesterkin could be in camp next year I would expect him to win the job just because Hank has declined so much. It also doesn't make why the idiot coach in Hartford is playing Hellberg the majority of the time. You would think since the organization used a second round pick on Halverson they would be getting him as much playing time down there as possible.

I don't think it's all that bad.... we lost.... it's not his fault we lost, it just happens sometimes. Lundqvist made some fantastic saves.

I don't want to make excuses, but the team is coming off a week long break, Lundqvist plays at the Garden the night before, and wasn't expecting to be in against the Habs..... and he still played pretty well. A few deflections and screens, a 46 second melt down, and next thing you know we lose a one goal game.

Price let in 4 goals.... The Canadians should probably trade him....

It's amazing how good Brodeur looked all those years when he had guys named Stevens, Daneyko, Niedermayer and Fetisov in front of him. Same with Dryden, who had Savard, Robinson, Lapointe, Laperriere. Billy Smith became a Hall of Famer with Potvin, Morrow, Langevin and Persson in front of him in an Al Arbour system. Holtby looks awesome and people talk about him winning the Vezina, mostly because his defense is stout and he rarely faces rebound chances or screened/deflected shots. Holtby is a one-and-done goalie because all he has to do on most nights is stop the first shot. Which he's able to see without screens 90% of the time. There's rarely a rebound chance either.

Point is, this defense in front of Henrik is mediocre at best. McDonagh is an All-Star, the rest are soft and prone to turnovers and lapses in position. Last game against the Habs they left TWO Habs all alone on the doorstep to take whacks at a loose puck. They retreat from the blueline, they do not move people in front or tie up sticks. They do not take the body along the boards to win loose pucks, and they get pinned in their own zone for shifts at a time because they don't hit. Lundqvist probably faces more deflections and rebound chances than any goalie not playing for Arizona or Colorado.

Henrik is fine. Get rid of some of the dead weight on defense and upgrade to actual defensemen who play DEFENSE. Unfortunately, AV will search for the next Yandle-type because he can never get enough power play QB's. Find some physical Dmen to give Henrik clear sight lines and a clean doorstep. Oh, and fire AV.

Wow. Interesting stats and diagrams. Thanks for the link.

According to that one graphic, the goals from Henrik's right side are killing him. Not a coincidence that Skjei, Girardi and Klein are on that side.

Please. Skjei is the least of the problems on this defense. Not to mention, it's not the fault of the defenseman when Lundqvist continues to let goals go through his legs with no screens.

Just another stat geek with too much time on their hands writing a worthless article. Watch the games. It's simple. Lundqvist has stunk and so have his vet defenseman clearing and covering the crease.

Ok, let's give credit where credit is due. Marty won 3 cups. There is Marty, Roy, Hasek of our generation & then every other goalie not named Marty, Hasek, Roy. He played on a top level into late 30s, 40? He carried that team the last 4-5 years & they were mediocre @ best all the way to the finals. I'm not going to take anything away from Marty no matter how I feel about Devils.

Broderick played most of his career under Lemaire, Robinson and Burns playing the Trap. And he had the benefit of very good to Hall of Fame defenseman in front of him. His last Cup was in '03, which the last season for Daneyko and Stevens on the Devils. Great goalie? Yes, all the goalies I mentioned were great. But his/their careers were greatly enhanced by the system and the defenseman they played with.

What would Brodeur look like if he had the current group of Rangers defensemen with AV's "system" in front of him? Probably a lot like Henrik looks right now.

Yeah, him and Lundqvist should go play golf together.

We can blame Lundqvist for tonight's loss... he could have maybe come up with a few more saves than he did..... but the coverage, and the mental errors of the team in front of him are the bigger problem.

Dan Rosen was in between periods. He said the same thing I said a few days ago here, you would expect a gradual decline at 35 & all the game he has played for 12 years. This is something else, really a goalie that totally lost it now, just doesn't have it anymore. You have to find it, adjust your game, or you are done.
