Bob McKenzie
? ?@TSNBobMcKenzie

Pending a trade call (not official until then), DET will get 2nd rder and 3rd rder, both in 2017, from NYR for Brendan Smith.

12:21 PM - 28 Feb 2017

"Even though Marc Staal has a much bigger contract and name recognition, Smith would likely become the Rangers second best option on the left side immediately behind captain Ryan McDonagh, and actually lengthen out their defense corps quite nicely. Yes, Kevin Shattenkirk would have been a bigger upgrade but Smith is no slouch. It’s not clear exactly where he would fit in, but helps the Rangers keep pace in the Metropolitan as the Penguins and Capitals both made additions to their back end.
Currently making $2.75MM, McKenzie tweeted today that he would be looking for at least a three year deal at $3.5MM if extended by the Red Wings. If the Rangers believe he could fit into their plans for longer than just the next few months, a similar extension would be tough to fit into their current cap situation with raises due for Jesper Fast, Mika Zibanejad and several others."

A second and a third for a rental. That will be on the third pair. He's a scrub, that's what's not to like.

Silly.

Gave up nothing...two picks is far from anything significant. Depth move, and fills in with some injury issues now. Scrub? Depends on who's opinion you like....I see where he raises his game in the playoffs, and has a little grit. You calling him a scrub makes me wonder how much you have seen him play.

Rental or not, nothing was dealt away that should have anyone not liking this.

The Wings got our 3rd in 2017....not our 2nd. They must have dealt with someone else to get two additional 2nd rounders in 2017

You saw him raising his game and grit in his minimal playoff games the last three years. Really. The wings have been blown out the last three years barely time to watch him. He must have been magnificent. You undoubtably were glued to the tube. Is this warrior the Wings were happy to dump for what you call nothing or far from significant really worth it??
Unless Staal or Girardi are traded, there is no upside.

Haven't seen him that I can remember at all....going by reports and interviews that I have seen.

Sooooo....you are basically lamenting the loss of draft picks, and hating we got a "scrub". I would hope you are knowledgeable enough to realize that Staal and Girardi are never getting traded....so what do you want? Keep the picks and pray that they are serviceable in 2020?

If you are going to give away picks they should have traded for Shattenkirk then no? No of course not is the consensus on here, he's going to be a free agent this summer and wants to play in New York. So sign him then. And couldn't the same thing apply to soon to be UFA Smith. Why give picks away for a guy you could get for nothing this summer. He's not going to make the team any better replacing Staal for certain, and will AV be able to remove his boy Dan from the first pair so Smith can make coaches quick first passes on his backhand. Probably not, so where does he fit in. Unless Staal or Girardi gets moved. Unless of course the Rangers want to sign him and expose him in the expansion draft. And nothing would surprise me after this.
And your wrong about Staal or Girardi possibly being traded. If David Clarkson and his contract could get traded before he got hurt any one can. All it takes is money and the Rangers have lots of that.

I see this as a depth move, and defensive insurance for a run this year, without giving away proven Young NHL talent. Of course there is an expense of draft picks... From what I've read about Smith, the Wings wanted him, couldn't sign him... yet.... the fans on their forums are pissed... so that usually means something. The NHL network is also saying this is a solid move by the Rangers.

I wouldn't have bothered, but even if it blows up in our faces it's not a huge price to pay. At worst he scores 6 fewer points than E. Staal and then signs somewhere else.

TSN.ca SCOUTING REPORT
Assets Skates extremely well and is adept at rushing up ice with the puck. Has offensive ability, an aggressive nature and excellent size. Has good puck skills and a bit of a mean streak.

Flaws Lacks consistency in all areas of the game of hockey. Also, he could stand to pick his spots better in the hitting department, as he can at times lose his positioning and focus.

Career potential Inconsistent, solid all-around defenseman.

Meh!

If Smith actually knocks some opponents on their asses inside the Rangers defensive zone, it's good trade.

If it frees up Gorton to be able to trade Staal tonight/tomorrow, it's a ****ing great trade.

He's not really an ass-knocker, but, Girardi is having a career goal-scoring year, so anything can happen.

We didn't lose a roster player, the picks aren't ridiculous, a higher price than I would want to pay for a rental, but right now we have two injured defensemen and it's not a bad idea to stock up for the playoffs. I would not have made the deal but, I 've seen worse deadline deals than this. (very recently)

Deadline hasn't arrived yet though...

NYR are most definitely interested in extending Smith's contract. Not urgent, but something both sides will consider.

Smith turned down 3 years, $3.75m per from the Wings just the other day. If he were to sign the same deal with the Rangers tomorrow it could be a good signing or a bad one, depending on the context of the rest of the defense.

Mixed feeling on my part, but diff-maker d-men don't grow on trees, hard to find, & other teams won't give up that easily. I don't know. I don't like giving up picks though drafting is gambling, still you gotta by in it to win it. I guess we see how he does, & ultimately the real test how the Rangers do ... as we know it is cup or bust for this team. They have set the bar so high for so many seasons now, it is really become cup or bust.
