Rangers have signed 2016 3rd round pick Sean Day to an ELC.

Immensely talented, big defenseman who dropped in the draft due to injury, stalled development, and potential "character issues".

he is still a project to get his head on straight. apparently made major advances this season in regard to his maturity and on whether hockey is his chosen profession. Season was a mixed-bag for talent such as his but a big step over the prior season. He could be an incredible value and ease some of the pain in to the organization's traded draft selections.
Will need some continued coaching/mentoring but this has to be considered a positive development.

14 goals 17 assists for 31 points in 57 games

compared to last season, 6 goals 16 assists

He was never a plus player. His best was a -13.... this year, he was + 19

He turned a huge corner.

Expectations were always unreasonably high for this kid so when he wasn't able to meet/exceed them all he was labeled a failure. On the surface if you just look at the player he is and what he's done he's a great value pick for the third round. Remains to be seen if he'll turn in to anything but I think it'll be 2-3 years before we know if he'll turn into an NHLer or not.

Let him play in Hartford away from the scrutiny of the NY media for a couple of years, and then we'll see if we really have a player or not.

At 15 he was in the OHA. He has prodigy raw talent. The expectations were he had his head on straight and his raw talent would evolve into a top 5 NHL draft pick. That didn't happen. He was pretty immature compared to other driven junior hockey players his age. He's playing catchup. This year was a positive step with many more to go. If he ever totally figures it out, he will be something. All you have to do is see this big guy skate and you get excited for what could be.

The difference between him and most other players is that with him hockey was always just for fun. He played it, he liked it, but he never saw it as a realistic career. So, he was naturally good, but being a pro seemed like a fantasy.

Others... most others.... they've strived to be where they are since they were kids. They were groomed. They went out of their way to make hockey their life.... Hockey was never Day's life.... until now.

Now he's being groomed to be a pro athlete, and he's been drafted. He's signed the ELC. This is his reality, and there is no other. Hockey is his life, and now that he is focused in on that, his talent won't go wasted

Because I read up on him when we drafted him... He's been interviewed, and his story is well documented. He says he played hockey for fun... made the highschool team, then all the sudden they started talking about exceptional status, and was given that at 15 years old.... it wasn't until then that he started thinking this could be a career. Those are the words from his mouth.

Now it's 4 years later, and he's set in this path, and making things happen. Reports are he's dedicated, and the proof is in the pudding.

This an interesting article by a guy who has seen him play live in Junior. Part of the knock is because of his exceptional status, the expectation was he'd score a 100 points every season. Maybe he's never going to be a big numbers guy. But if half of what this writer says is true then we just might have a number 1 pair defenseman on our hands. This guy is very very high on Days defensive abilities. And big men sometimes take a little longer to round out their game.
Anyways the writer has some credentials and a reputation on the line when he puts his name to the article. So let's hope he's bang on.

I should also mention this was obviously written before the draft so Day has improved his status since then. Could be a outa the park pick.
