According to Elliotte Friedman, the Rangers are considered a favorite to land 22-year-old Russian defenseman Alexei Bereglazov. (Sportsnet)

Bereglazov went undrafted in 2012, is 6-4, 192 and has 1 goal and 18 assists this season for Mettallurg in the KHL.

He won Bronze with Russia at the 2014 World Juniors as a teammate of Pavel Buchnevich and was also a teammate of Buchnevich and Rangers prospect Igor Shesterkin in the Euro Hockey Tour last year.

In the preliminary Central Scouting Rankings for 2012, Bereglazov was ranked as the 34th Russian.

Bereglazov was ranked 54th by Central Scouting in their final rankings of European Skaters. (NHL.com)

He had 6 assists in 7 playoff games for Mettalurg this past season.

Adam Rotter: I'm in favor of the Rangers going after every young prospect/former high draft pick/European player, etc because while most won't pan out you can still add a roster player or in the best case one of them develops into a core player and you have Mats Zuccarello.

I'm sure the Rangers have seen Bereglazov a lot over the past few years with all the time they spent watching Buchnevich as well as top goalie prospect Igor Shesterkin play in the KHL. He's a young player, has size and if they can sign him, let him adjust in Hartford for some time and then see if he can be an NHL player. There is no risk involved other than using one of their 50 contract slots, many of which are designated for prospects like him.

While it was a bad choice choosing Boyle over Stralman, I think the Rangers were probably trying to avoid signing another D at age 28 for 5 years. Adding another long term contract on top of Girardi and Staal was not a good idea. Maybe not having Stralman on the roster allowed Skjei to play.

Most times Stralman has been on Tampa's top pair since he'sa gone there. He's on a cap friendly 4.5 mill a year contract. He stated numerous times he would have been friendly to a Ranger contract. Not sure how he would have blocked Skjei, from what he's showed he would have been here no matter what. Losing Stralman and his right shot was a bigger loss than I think the Rangers expected.

Here was a player who was traded twice in one off-season (2009) and was dropped by the NJ Devils after a PTO (2011). Who knew then how good he'd be with the Rangers. Our defense would have been significantly better with Stralman than with Boyle.

Poor asset management by the Rangers.

Remember his name from the draft but not much else. Did some research, there's not a ton out there.

He fell in the draft due to possibility that he wouldn't come to NA. This was a concern with Buchnevich also but that's worked itself out. He's worked out at the Coyotes' prospect camp. Good skater, good stick, despite his size I don't see that he's a banger or a crease clearer.

Regardless a free 22 year old defenseman is almost always welcome. At worst he plays a couple of years in Hartford and goes back to Europe if he doesn't pan out. At best he becomes part of the new young russian core with Buchnevich and Shesterkin.

Zach Aston-Reese, this year's most coveted NCAA UFA, signed with the Penguins, and there's really no one else out there really pursuing, and I assume the Rangers have a couple of contract spots reserved for these younger, low risk high reward players. Bereglazov seems like a good way to spend one of those, if there are other NCAA UFAs that are worth signing, we should remain active in that area. Gilmour signing last year was a good one, Bodie did well in his time here. Of course a few years ago we signed Zuccarello under similar circumstances, a lot of times you're getting an AHL'er but once in a while you'll hit on a good one.

Hard to find reports from legitimate sources, but here is one from Kyle Woodlief from the 2012 draft:

Sleepers

Bereglazov is a very large man-child at 6-4, 187 pounds with a big, raw-boned frame to fill out. At that size, he exhibits pretty good footwork around the defensive end, and shoots bombs from the point as a triggerman on the power play. He doesn't use his strength to full advantage by running guys through the boards, but he will pin his man in the corners and keep the crease clear. Bereglazov has the confidence to handle and make plays with the puck, and pretty fair hockey sense as well.

At the time of his draft year, (2012) Corey Pronman ranked him 112 overall,

112. Alexei Bereglazov, Defense, Magnitogorsk-MHL

http://www.hockeyprospectus.com/puck/article.php?articleid=1305

In this list, Skjei was ranked 37 (drafted 29th overall) and Nieves was ranked 58 (drafted 59 overall)

Also, Staal fell off map when Stralman left. Stralman was not only good in his own right, he made Staal that much better. When he left it's like we lost two defenseman. And then signed Boyle and effectively made that three.

It could look like this July 1st on D
Mac Skjei
Staal Holden
Girardi Klein
Schmitty? Shatt?
Kampfer? Clendo

The continued problem with Shattenkirk is that I have no faith that AV will use him properly, or even well.

We had an elite level PP defenseman in Yandle who played on the second PP unit. Would Shattenkirk even play PP? Who knows?

If we sign Shattenkirk and resign Smith, I think that's as good as it'll get, especially if Klein and/or Girardi depart this summer, somehow.

McDonagh - Shattenkirk
Skjei - Smith
Staal - Holden

Spares/filler - Kampfer, UFA veteran, possibly Graves (Clendening is as good as gone at this point)

If no Shattenkirk I think resigning Smith should be high on their priority list

McDonagh - Smith
Skjei-Girardi/Klein?
Staal - Holden

Same spares

Much weaker overall. Also gives Skjei a bit of a challenge, but remember how well McDonagh was able to cover for Girardi for years. Skjei has a similar skill set and could do the job. Not ideal but probably workable.

Overall the defense needs a compete overhaul if you ask me. But admittedly tough to do with the contracts we have in place.

Yep totally....Albatross contracts that no one will dare touch...Yandle thing was a disaster...You trade a 1 and Duclair to get him...then you let him go for a 6th. For the love of God stop giving away draft picks
