How do you feel about this ?

Apr 3 | 3:57PM

The NHL has announced that they will not take a break next season to allow players to play in the Olympics.

In 2014 the Rangers had Henrik Lundqvist, Mats Zuccarello, Ryan McDonagh and Derek Stepan as Olympians.

Possible Olympians in 2018 included Lundqvist, Zuccarello, McDonagh, Stepan, JT Miller & Chris Kreider.

Henrik Lundqvist said recently that he would like to play in the Olympics again if the NHL was going

Hank Tweeted this;

Disappointing news, @NHL won't be part of the Olympics 2018. A huge opportunity to market the game at the biggest stage is wasted..

But most of all, disappointing for all the players that can't be part of the most special adventure in sports..

Good...I couldn't possibly care any less about the Olympics than I already do. Stopping the season cold to go there and risk players safety is a terrible idea...Next thing for the NHL to do is get rid of the equally stupid bye week.

I could care less about the Olympics, but I also understand the interest from players to play for their country. I think players should be allowed to play for their country, I don't think the NHL needs to take a break...leave it up to the teams to allow their players to play or not.

. The old days young Americans and Canadians were playing European pro players which tilted the rink in the European favour, except for Herb Brook's crew. Might be a little more level playing field if NHL and Euro elite league players were barred. The NHl doesn't need the Olympics it's the other way around. You want the best against the best have a pre season World Cup every other year.

Then what happens to the Islanders when John Tavares gets injured in the Olympics?....What do you tell the players that are not going to be on the Olympic team?...The Season success you are working towards has to wait for the Olympic guys to come back?

But how come no one brought up the fact that Fast isn't on the list of possible olympians? How could he not be considered?!?!

NHL will come up with some stupid rule to prevent players from leaving. Like you forfeit the rest of the season or something.

I don't really have a dog in this fight, I can see the argument either way. Honestly Bettman is not the bad guy here, nor are the owners/players, it's the way the IOC demands that all their terms are fulfilled and stomps its feet if it doesn't get their way. NHL just wants to be compensated like a sponsor, if the IOC would allow this (they have more than enough money to do it) I'm sure the league would allow players to go, as it would be a win for everyone. IOC is being greedy here though, which is what's forcing NHL into taking this position (as is their right to do so) and putting the players and owners at the ire of the fans.

Ovechkin has stated he's going regardless of the NHL's decision. Rumors spreading of players leaving the NHL to play in other pro leagues, just so they can play for their countries in the Olympics.

What happened to the Olympics being a competition for amateur players and athletes? Yeah, I remember the Soviet bloc countries cheating like crazy with that stuff, but that made beating them all the more exciting.

You should get an opportunity to play for your country while you're an amateur. Once you sign a CONTRACT to be a professional player, your choices shrink in that regard. I have no patience or sympathy for players whining about not being able to "play for their country". You signed a contract, you're being handsomely compensated as a result, shut the **** up and honor your commitment.

I understand players wanting to play for their countries also... but screw them, stay playing in your country then. Your under a contract $$$$, that you would never get in your country. I've always hated Rangers going to the Olympics, don't know why the NHL allowed it....and pumped they won't be going next year.

BottomLine, the law of probability says a percentage of players (The best in the World) will get injured, some season ending... hurting - killing in some situations, their NHL teams opportunity and Fans.

I'll enjoy the Olympics more seeing some Ranger and American prospects competing.

Bettman is a scumbag too...He is trying to hoodwink the Union....He said the players can go to the Olympics...in exchange for extending the CBA for another 3 years...Stopping the NHL season to send players to an exhibition tournament is a bad idea....Ask the Islanders and Tavares

Awesome point. I remember watching Leetch and Granato in '88 and being interested more in seeing what the future might bring to the Rangers than in seeing current Rangers playing.

You guys are living in the past if you think the Olympics is anything about amateurism. NBA, pro soccer, tennis, track and field - pretty much every athlete in Olympics is well compensated whether as a team sport player or individual. Nobody from the NBA or soccer is whining about 'oh, my favorite player on my team might get hurt' - it's the risk the player has a choice to make. Some golfers chose not to go to Rio due to Zika virus risks. NHL players would have the same right to refuse selection to the team.

I'm an old-timer but I really love seeing the best players in the world competing for their countries. If I wanted to see amateurs, maybe I'd go to the world juniors tournament.

I'm not fully up on the IOC greed thing, although that doesn't surprise me but I'm pretty sure Bettman's looking to milk some more money out of it for his owners at the players' expense.

Haven't you folks watched the past 2 Olympics? You didn't love it and look forward to next time?

Let the kids play in the Olympics. Would be cool to see the prospects represent their countries. Teams get a look at their kids in the system and how they play on a bigger stage.

Didn't watch. The novelty has worn off. The Canada Cups were awesome, so were the first few World Cups. Now, it's stale.

We already see the best players in the world compete, every time we watch an NHL game... I'd rather watch my team play for me and my City. I have nothing invested in the Americans winning a gold medal, but have a ton of time, money and grey hairs invested in the Rangers.

The prospect of getting a player knocked out for the year is not worth it... and what do I care if Zuc, Hank, Nash win it for their countries.

I hope they don't change their minds... I know why Canadians are pissed, for the same reason Americans were pissed when the Olympics canceled Women softball, and how Americans would feel if they canceled NBA players..... a sure Gold.

we can agree to disagree. I love when TJ Oshie, Paul Stastny and Max Pacioretty are 4th liners. I don't get that in an NHL game. Or when Rick Nash is relegated to PK and checking line duties.
And it's not just the Canadians that are pissed - Americans, Swedes, Russians and Finns always seem super motivated and a few bounces of the puck and a hot goalie can certainly win it for any of them, just like the best team doesn't always win the cup.

As I said, to each his own but I find plenty to enjoy when these teams play for their countries.

I think it's better when they play world cups pre season. Some teams that get their asses kicked in the Olympics are not invited so the gong show 10-1 games don't waste time. The world cups are as good or better being under NHL control. And it's all hockey.

Yes its been known that to play for your country is a privilege. For example in soccer clubs in Europe are obligated to release a player to play for his/her country as long as the game is in a UEFA or FIFA calendar.

Eff the IOC. This is a criminal organization. All they want is money. The IOC probably want the NHL to pay to be in the Olympics. Besides, raise your hand if you want a 3 week break from hockey in February.

Some players are saying they're going regardless... wonder what would happen if the NHL doesn't have a break and players leave their teams for 3-4 weeks.

I get this feeling that the NHL is going to crack and let players go.

Regardless of the NHL participating or not, it's still more hockey. It's not like they are going to cancel the tournament just because the NHL is out. I used to think that we'll never get to witness another "miracle on ice" again, but without NHL players in the Olympics, who knows. All of those 2nd tier European teams will actually have a better chance to medal. With an 82 game season plus playoffs, I get enough pro hockey. Give me more amateur hockey.

But the lineups are insane. When you put that kind of talent together, the level of play is unparalleled. There may never be another miracle on ice again, but that may never happen again regardless.

Every 4 years, we get to see dream teams put together. Canada, USA, Russia, and Sweden are always stacked clubs.

The plus side to the NHL not participating is the potential for new players to be discovered. Signing playerd after the Olympics from national teams for playoff runs, I could see hsppening more often. Undrafted talent getting their chance to shine.

Put without NHL players and coaches, the play and skill level won't be nearly as high.
