So, Girardi has three years (after this year) left on his contract at $5.5M. A buyout would allow the Rangers to get his full number off the books at the rate of 2/3 of his value, distributed over twice the remaining length of his contract. So it would mean (if my math is right), the Rangers would carry $1.833M of cap hit for six years if they were to buy him out.

I think they are going to have to work a trade where a team with a low cap takes Girardi and another meaningful nugget and sends back a tin of skoal bandits.

Found this web site:
https://www.capfriendly.com/buyout_calculator

ASSUMING their calculations are correct, cap hit would be:
2017-2018 2,611,111
2018-2019 3,611,111
2019-2020 3,611,111
2020-2021 1,111,111
2021-2022 1,111,111
2022-2023 1,111,111

Staal's numbers are:
2017-2018 2,133,333
2018-2019 2,133,333
2019-2020 3,133,333
2020-2021 1,433,333
2021-2022 1,433,333
2022-2023 1,433,333
2023-2024 1,433,333
2024-2025 1,433,333

and Nash's numbers are:
2017-2018 2,333,333
2018-2019 2,333,333

Makes no sense to buy Staal out;Girardi yes; Nash attractive.

If correct, that's a huge dead money pill to swallow for Girardi in 19 and 20. Not sure that is accurate.

And no shot they buyout Nash with only one year left, that would be very dumb.

This is a team that goes right up to the cap every year, and you guys think having 5 mill of dead cap money is a good move...NO SHOT. At best Girardi is the only guy who is bought-out, but even then I am sure they will try and do what Rr suggests. I do think Girardi is gone this summer though one way or another. He is the one guy I think they would buyout if they had to.

Keep Nash and Staal as they are not the problem. Try and trade Girardi and if no one bites then you buyout his contract. He is the liability on this team.

Staal paired with the right guy can be serviceable defenseman
Nash plays hard in all 3 zones and has 1 year left on his contract.

The mistake to me was resigning BOTH Staal and Girardi. Should have been either or. Bringing both back at 11.2 mill combined was too much.

Girardi Has been fine this playoff. Our forwards seem to be the problem.
