[CHI/CBJ] Panarin, Motte, 6th for Saad, Forsberg, 2018 5th

Columbus to be quite scary next year

Maybe not. Tortorella will wear out his welcome again and...we know how that ends.

Pittsburgh still values muscle. First rounder wow.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired forward Ryan Reaves and the 51st pick in the 2017 draft from the St. Louis Blues for the 31st pick in the 2017 draft and forward Oskar Sundqvist.

Reaves appeared in 80 games this season for the Blues, contributing seven goals and six assists with 104 penalty minutes. He has spent seven season with the Blues after they selected him 156th overall in the 5th round of the 2005 NHL Draft.

They play in-your-face hockey. Every player takes the body because they have a coach who demands that even the star players take the body.

I kept waiting for the Caps or the Preds to out-hit or out-muscle them in the playoffs this year. Didn't happen.

Reaves just died and went to heaven. He'll fit in well there.

Considering our center depth and the available options, Thornton on a one year deal isn't that bad. Three years? That's insanity at this point, unless there was some under the table deal to "get injured" and LTIR when needed.

Other UFA options at center,
Sam Gagner, who would be my pick if we had to pick someone,
Bonino, who will be grossly overpaid because of the two cups,
Hanzal, who will be grossly overpaid considering he should be a bottom-6 forward on this Ranger team
Brian Boyle, who I like a lot but again, some team is going to overpay for a bottom-6 player. If you think it's dumb giving your first line center $6.5m, I don't know how you justify giving your fourth line center $3.5m.

I don't know what the Rangers' plan is for the offseason, Gorton admitted he was trying to "rebuild on the fly" but gutting your center depth with no real replacement plan is heading in the wrong direction. Hopefully Nieves can take the fourth line center spot so we're not spending millions on it, and if you can get Gagner on an affordable deal you can rotate him, Hayes, Zibanejad as your 3,2,1.

The out of the box idea would be to sign Leon Draisaitl to an offer sheet of 6x6m. It would require giving up next year's first, second, and third, but for a guy who's basically the next Anze Kopitar, that's a bargain. Of course it'll never happen.

Methot to Dallas for 2nd in 2020 and Ferguson, goalie the Stars just drafted from Kamloops in the 7th round

I think Vegas could have gotten more for Methot.

I think they could have gotten more also, on the other hand he's a 32 year old defenseman who's lost a step. Not sure why they settled on a second round pick 3 years in the future?

The other possibility is that this completes part of an under-the-table side deal from all the expansion draft shenanigans. Dallas may have been "owed" by the VGK.

Next few days should be interesting indeed. I am a no on Shattenkirk if he wants a max type deal...Maybe the Rangers can be the team that starts to put an end to the ridiculous Dipietro type contracts that have killed this league over the last 10 years?

Guy I would like the Rangers to get with close to half retained is Soderberg. Coming of a atrocious year when he had 51 points the year before. He should be absolutely dirt cheap. 3 years left on his contract. Good faceoff guy. If they can get him for half salary and a couple of half-azzzz defenseman prospects, I'd do it. I don't see the stupid Av's having any interest in keeping him. They stink. Might as well go with kids.

Staal is 30 and done according to this page. Personally I'm not so sure he couldn't still be a very effective defenseman playing for a coach that adapts his system to suit his defenseman strengths and weaknesses. You know sort of like Pittsburgh. Instead of stubbornly continuing to try to play the same way all the while interchanging players with different skill sets, including some (Girardi, Staal) flat out not suited to play the style.
Now the scuttle is bring in Shattenkirk who will come for no less than 6 years at $6,000,000, and that's the best case for the Rangers it's likely going to be more like 7 years at $7,000,000. Other teams are going to pony up for a right shot power play guy.. He's going to get paid. The only fit I see is he's a right side guy. They still don't beat Ottawa with him in the lineup. He's not a game changer. I don't think the Rangers should be targeting a pp guy anyways. Skjei and McDonagh are fine as QB's. And with DeAngelo in the mix, the Rangers need to tell double mint to use those three and a Zuccarello or whoever to fill the PP pointmen. Coach them, make it work. This changeover crap has been going on since coach got here. At some point in time management has to realize it ain't working after expensive and futile try's with Boyle and Yandle. The problem with the Rangers PP is behind the bench.
All the Rangers have to do is look at the cast of no names Rutherford assembled in Pittsburgh and start looking. Find a Right side defensive dman that can log some minutes with McD, sign Smith, and give DeAngelo his shot, and start the season with that. DeAngelo has the potential to be the Rangers defensive go to guy, he's ready to go, let him buck. Don't f up his development watching Shattenkirk. Save the f'n cap space and pounce, when another teams accounting issues land a young nugget in their lap. Hopefully Gorton isn't going to be running around like a rube at a carnival with this new cap room.

So, I'll start out by saying I don't want Shattenkirk. At the same time, 6-7 million and 5-7 yrs is the market for a defensemen of his abilities. Look what we gave Girardi; look what we gave Staal. He'll get his money - just hope it doesn't have Dolan's signature on the checks.

Next thought - re D'Angelo, he'll be every bit as good as Shattenkirk is on the PP and has a little feistiness despite his 5'11 190lb frame. I hope he gets used the way he should and not buried at his first mistake as AV is prone to do with his young ones. If I see Staal/Holden at the end of ANY game this year I may just hustle down to the Ranger bench and personally rip AV a new a-hole. Anyway we can throw in Holden into a deal would be a good thing since Staal's not going anywhere.

Final thought - re Staal - I disagree - I don't think he could play in P'burg or anywhere at a high level. With Girardi it may have been the AV system that didn't work for him (or maybe not) but I just feel Staal has never been the same since the eye injury and concussion(s). His vision on the ice is awful including knowing when to and when not to pinch. He's timid heading to the boards on dump-ins in his own end, rarely coming away with the puck. His weak wristers from the point are now not only weak but rarely reach the front of the net where a deflection or puck luck could happen.

Random thoughts on a slow off-season day

If your suggesting DeAngelo will be every bit as good as Shattenkirk on the power play this season that might be pretty optimistic. Down the road he definitely has stud potential.
We can agree to disagree on Staal. Staal s biggest problem has been his partner.

Travis Hamonic traded to Calgary for 2018 1st and 2 2nd's

Hamonic had wanted to be traded to western Canada for the past two seasons. Apparently for family reasons. Nice defenseman, but Calgary overpaid.

Shattenkirk to the Rangers? No. Hell no. **** no.

Saw nothing in the playoffs from him that warrants franchise-player contract terms, which he will ask for. DeAngelo, Skjei and McDonagh can run the PP, so long as someone else coaches the PP. The real need is for size and snarl on the backline, not another offensive minded Dman.
