The Rangers could look to add a center before the season starts

Aug 20 | 6:00PM

Alain Vigneault said that it's a "definite" possibility that the Rangers acquire a third-line center prior to the start of the season. (NHL.com)

Vigneault said that "it could be in the cards." (NHL.com)

He has previously said that he would like to keep JT Miller on the wing and that could leave David Desharnais, Lias Andersson and Boo Nieves competing for a spots at center.

Desharnais has said that he believes his best role is on the third line.

There has been speculation that the Rangers could look to trade Nick Holden to acquire a center.

Adam Rotter: Trading Holden for a center is what makes the most sense but I think that a move like that would occur at the end of training camp/right before the preseason. At that time teams may be dealing with injuries and or willing to move center players in trade they don't want to lose on waivers for nothing.

Ultimately though I think the Rangers are going to head into the season with the group they have and see how things play out. Desharnais is capable of being a bottom-six center and Boo Nieves and/or Lias Andersson are likely capable of holding down the fourth line. Injuries could change things, as could a potential move of JT Miller to center, but just because the Rangers enter the season one way doesn't mean it will stay that way.

Its funny how so few want Holden, yet he's valuable enough to swap for a third line center. You can't make this stuff up.

It's funny how you two morons think you know there are few teams interested or he can't bring back anything. As if you are the GM talking on the phone with teams. Did it ever occur to either of you tools that maybe Gorton is asking for too much in return? Or is trying to package him with a couple of prospects for a real good center? Of course not. You guys know everything.

I heard the same stupidity from our fan base with Gomez. Hmmmm.... I also heard from our swift fan base it would take all our top players to get Nash which it didn't. I also heard that Vesey wasn't coming here from our fan base. I also heard all our prospects suck from our fan base every year. Yet, every year, we develop at least 1 good player. Oh Stralman. He sucked according to our fan base when they signed him. So did Raanta. As it was a colossal mistake to trade Talbot. This board is consistent. Consistently wrong.

Amazing how you immediately resort to name calling before you even comment on a post.

Why are you comparing Holden to any of those players? You do realize those players actually have (or in Nash's case had) "TALENT"!!!!

Rangers a finalist for Harvard stud, who would be perfect fit
By Larry Brooks August 21, 2017 | 12:57 pm

The Rangers are among the final two or three teams under consideration by Harvard free-agent center Alex Kerfoot, The Post has learned.

J.P. Barry, the 23-year-old center’s agent who confirmed the parties’ mutual interest, told The Post that Kerfoot likely would reach a decision no later than Tuesday following a weekend of reflection.

Kerfoot, a Hobey Baker finalist who recorded 45 points (16-29) for the Crimson last year, was originally selected by the Devils in the fifth round of the 2012 entry draft at 150th overall but decided to go the route of one-time teammate Jimmy Vesey and become a free agent after four years in college.

The 5’10, 175-pounder is quick and skilled and plays a position at which the Blueshirts appear painfully thin with teenage first-rounder Lias Andersson and veteran David Desharnais apparently 3 and 4 on the depth chart down the middle behind Mika Zibanejad and Kevin Hayes.

If Kerfoot, a Vancouver native, does follow Vesey to Broadway, he would certainly be in the mix for an opening-night roster spot.

1) Trading Holden for a center would obviously be part of a package.... trades are hardly ever 1 for 1.... even the McDonagh for Gomez had add ons if I remember right. Problem is The Rangers don't have much as far as picks or prospects go to be add ons.

Brining us to

2) I love the college signings. Adding another <6' player "who can skate" doesn't sound exciting, but I haven't seen him play much at all.

Pulling the rug out from under the devils sounds fun if he's NHL talent, though

What's great is he acts like he knew those moves would all work out. When the moves I remember him being a fan of was $8 million for AHL player, Hags for Etem being a steal, and McIlrath being a long term answer at defense. He's 0 for everything except in hindsight where gets to claim his genius about moves that have already been made.

Oh wait, this one is great. Here is alter-ego Dump and his awesome player moves he wants to make.

yeahnomoreavery - 2014-03-02 9:38 AM

Absolutely no to signing Stralman. This pansy team needs McIlrath on the backend next year. End of discussion. This team is unbelievably soft. They have no toughness. While I don't agree with some fans wanting 4 goons on this team the team needs McIlrath as the 6th defenseman badly. They also need to go out and trade for a kid like Fraser on Boston. Personally, I would trade Stralman to Boston for Fraser now. Allen can take the 6th defenseman spot with McIlrath. Let both of those guys platoon for a while. Let's face it, the Rangers if they make the playoffs are basically going to be playing Girardi and McDonagh 25 minutes and Staal and Klein 22 minutes per game.

And then he wants to sign Fraser for 4 years @ $2 million per. You're the best Dump.

I bet another of Kerfoot's candidates is the Pens - no depth past Crosby and Malkin.

(Unsubstantiated)

Kerfoot has narrowed the choice down to Canucks or Rangers, reports website "nextsportstar.com."

Contrary to previous reports that the Canucks were likely out. I'd still call it a rumor at this point.
