Vesey needs to step it up for sure... I think this is part of learning to be a pro, coming out of NCAA where the schedule is 40 games.

From last year when we signed Vesey:

If Vesey hits 35 points this year he will have far exceeded my expectations.

This is silly. "Far" exceeded your expectations? With the offense he is supposed to bring, and the icetime he is supposed to get.....35 is "far" exceeding your expectations? Then what are you expecting? 20 points? and that is what you are expecting?

Hayes got 45 points in his rookie year....same hype. I don't see why we would "expect" so much less from Vesey.

I am saying that "the offense he is supposed to bring" has been vastly overhyped. Hayes came from a much better division (HE vs ECAC) and stepped onto a President's Trophy winning team that ended with the second best offense in the league... In 2015-16 the team did worse and Hayes' numbers came right back down to earth. (Also check out his shooting percentage for the past two years to explain some of that difference too) The 2016-17 team that Vesey will start on will not come close to that level of offensive output.

With nothing but Vesey talk the past 2 months he's going to be overrated a bit. Nothing against the kid, love the signing, glad we picked up a young talent for cheap, I just don't expect that much out of his rookie season.

35 points is what Hagelin picked up on a Presidents Trophy team in 82 games - you expect more than that? We'll see I guess.

Vesey finished with 27 points in 80 games. Not uncommon for rookie NCAA forwards to come out strong and get worn out mid season. I'm encouraged by his playoff performance, 5 points in 12 games, and seemed rejuvenated. With the lack of depth up front he and Hayes, Kreider, Zibanejad will need to step up.

Totally spot on...Hayes, Kreider, Zib absolutely....Vesey for me just did just enough to give him this year for another look...but if he has to be packaged to get something...no argument here

I don't remember Vesey ever being hyped as a guy who would bring all sorts of offense.... He was the biggest prize on the college FA market, no doubt, but everyone said that just because he was the top NCAA FA didn't mean we should expect him to be a game breaker.

That said, he had his moments this year. Scored a few goals by driving to the net. He's a solid 3rd liner in my opinion, but AV used him with Nash and Stepan on the 1st line often enough.

They need to do something. Their prospected first liners are not top line players...Zib aint a 1...Hayes aint a 2

I think Zibanejad has potential to be.... His numbers didn't quite reflect it last year with the injury, but the potential is there to put up 60-70 pts...

Hayes, I agree, isn't a #2.... but I think Miller is. JT put up 56 pts last season playing up and down the lineup... If they increased his role, gave him solid consistent top 6 minutes? He could put up 60+ also...

The Rangers will be rolling the dice a bit here this season, but they could prove to be a young dangerous team... a lot has to go right, but it can.

I want to win the Stanley Cup....We have been proven we are not there yet...So if we have to move people to get better...im 100% for it. 1 Cup in 76 years is not anything to get excited about...Ive been taking it personal with this team since I'm 9 years old

You would be a moron to get rid of Vesey. Guess some people didn't see the fact that he was one of our better forwards in the playoffs. The points weren't there but they will come if he keeps playing like he did in the post season. He's also young and hungry. Not overpaid and lazy like Stepan was.

and the answer is ....... kidding

Prospect Gabriel Fontaine wants to play in the AHL or NHL this season

Aug 24 | 3:19PM

2016 6th round pick Gabriel Fontaine said that he is focusing on playing in the AHL or NHL this season and not returning to the QMJHL for an overage season. (Estrieplus)

Fontaine said that his coach in the QMJHL even joked that he didn't want to see Fontaine again because he is ready to take the next step in his development.(Estrieplus)

He said that he will play with the Rangers in the Traverse City tournament and then join the team for training camp. (Estrieplus)

Fontaine, 20, has been training in New York this summer and staying with a host family while preparing for the season. (Estrieplus)

He adds that he admires Rick Nash and that just being around him would be a "great" experience.

The Rangers signed Fontaine to an entry-level deal this past spring after he had 52 points in 59 games.

Fontaine spent most of training camp last year with the Rangers dealing with an injury before being returned to the QMJHL.

Fontaine was listed 10th on the Rangers list of prospects by The Hockey News in the spring.

Ryan Kennedy wrote in April that Fontaine is a "feisty and responsible two-way center."

Fontaine has described himself as a "two-way player" and Gordie Clark has called him a "shutdown" player that has embraced that kind of role. (NYR)

Adam Graves has said that Fontaine can play in all three areas of the ice and that his ability as a penalty killer and defensive forward could allow him to "excel" as a pro. (NYR)

Rangers scout Daniel Dore said in the Rangers Prospect Report for 10/24, "He is a fast skater, a good passer, and he protects the puck very well. He showed leadership and determination throughout last season while helping his team win the QMJHL Championship."

Rangers have a bunch of guys they picked up in the mid rounds, that don't get hyped at all but could turn into good bottom-6/lower defensemen.

Fontaine, if he goes back for an overage year, would not be a good step for him. Usually it's not a good step for anyone unless they've had injury or size issues.

I wouldn't get down on the guy... from everything I've read he has solid fundamentals. Doesn't project to be a scorer at the NHL level but a good skater, good on the PK, good defensively... that usually gets you to the AHL at least.

Regardless he's one of those "put them on on a shelf and wait a couple of years" guys. No need to micromanage him.

His first step is make Hartford this season to improve his odds of making the NHL. If he goes back to junior as a overage his odds of making the NHL increase drastically. The Hartford pipeline hasn't exactly been paying dividends the last couple of seasons and with the exception of Graves and possibly Nieves the NHL ready prospect tank is bare. The rest of last years team are a bunch of college free agent longshots, none of who has much NHL potential. Stromwall and Kovacs, Tambellini ect. are still in the prove they are good players in the AHL stage.

I heard the announcers say that MLB is doing this crap to get youngsters interested in baseball.

Did you see what they're wearing in Miami? If I were a youngster and saw those, I'd run screaming to another sport.

Lindy Ruff likes defensemen to join the play and create offense

Aug 27 | 7:24AM

This should be interesting :

Alain Vigneault said that he is open to working with Lindy Ruff on new ideas regarding systems when the coaches have their meetings in August. (NY Post)

Vigneault said that everyone will brainstorm and try to figure out how to get the most out of the players they have. (NY Post)

He added, "I'm very interested in Lindy's ideas about how to play in the defensive zone. I think his defense has been one of the best in north-south play and in getting up into the play." (NY Post)

Kevin Weekes said on the NHL Network this week that Ruff is well respected and likes playing an up-tempo style. (NHL Network)

EJ Hradek said on the NHL Network that when Ruff was in Buffalo he liked to "turn the defenseman" loose. (NHL Network)

Ruff was asked about playing up-tempo on the NHL Network pointed to the Penguins, saying that they had a very active defense that would pinch and create offense at the right times. (NHL Tonight)

Some of the defensemen that Ruff has coached in his career include Brian Campbell, John Klingberg, Ed Jovanovski, James Patrick, Tyler Myers & Alex Goligoski.

Adam Rotter: One of the big parts of Alain Vigneault's coaching strategy is having a mobile defense that can get the puck up the ice quickly. That also seems to be what Lindy Ruff has employed as a coach and, in some cases, had some very effective defensemen. Adding Kevin Shattenkirk and getting a full season from Brendan Smith is definitely an upgrade in terms of mobility from Dan Girardi and Kevin Klein. Ryan McDonagh and Brady Skjei are excellent skaters and even with Marc Staal, and whoever ends up as #6, the Rangers should have a pretty mobile group
