I'm interested in seeing how this plays out. Without researching it, I can't think of two coaches with the experience these two have on the same staff. The one with the biggest adjustment to make is Ruff. He's going to have to do some serious lip biting to maintain harmony. We've all seen enough of the curious player deployments by double mint, and his admitted two tiered leash for his favourites or as he calls them veterans and others.
Ruff brings a new set of eyes and me thinks double mint might not like some of his opinions.

Based on what information do we think AV thinks he knows it all???

Or that these two won't be on the same page? What lip biting will Ruff have to do about what?

feel good story here ...Ratelle truly had an amazing career with The Rangers, sort of an unsung hero in my opinion..

Jean Ratelle's #19 will be retired in February before a game against the Wings

1:57PM 8/28/17
The Rangers have announced that they will retire #19 in honor of Jean Ratelle prior to their game against Detroit on Sunday 2/25/18.

Rangers President, and Ratelle's former teammate, Glen Sather said "Jean Ratelle is truly one of the greatest players to have ever played for the New York Rangers. Few players have demonstrated the class, dignity, and gracefulness that Jean possessed throughout his career, both on and off the ice. I had the good fortune to call Jean a teammate with the Rangers, I am proud to still call Jean a friend, and I am honored to announce that he will take his rightful place in the rafters of Madison Square Garden."

From the Rangers announcement, Ratelle:
•Played parts of 16 seasons with the Rangers (1960-61 - 1975-76), registering 336 goals and 481 assists for 817 points, along with a plus-167 rating in 861 games.
•Ranks second on the Rangers' all-time goals list, ranks third on the franchise's all-time assists list and all-time points list, and ranks sixth in career games played with the Blueshirts.
•He and Rod Gilbert are the only players who rank third or higher on the Rangers' all-time lists for goals, assists, and points.
•Is one of only five players in franchise history who played in parts of 16 or more seasons with the Rangers (along with Gilbert, Harry Howell, Brian Leetch, and Ron Greschner).
•1971-72 & 1972-73 Team MVP
•Players' Player Award Winner in 1967-68, 1968-69, 1969-70, 1970-71, 1974-75
•Registered 30 or more goals in more seasons than any other player in franchise history (six).
•Recorded the final goal at the 'Old Garden' (MSG III) in a 3-3 tie against Detroit on February 11, 1968, and he took the first faceoff for the Rangers at the current MSG (MSG IV) on February 18, 1968 against Philadelphia.
•Received the Lester B. Pearson Award (since renamed the Ted Lindsay Award) as the NHL's Most Outstanding Player as selected by the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) in 1971-72.
•Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1985
•The only player in NHL history who tallied at least 1,200 career points while amassing fewer than 300 career penalty minutes.
•Received the Lady Byng Trophy ("adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability" twice in his NHL career (1971-72 and 1975-76)
•Received the Bill Masterton Trophy, awarded annually to the player who "best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey," in 1970-71.

It was reported last February that the Rangers would retire Ratelle's #19 this coming season.

He was voted as one of the NHL's Top 100 players this past season.

Gresch broke most (if not all) of Howell's records (and that doesn't count his time playing center). He held those records until Leetch....so if Howell and Leetchy are up there, there is absolutely no reason Gresch shouldn't up there.

In 71-72 if Ratelle hadn't got injured they might have won a cup. Robstones, coaches have a similar philosophy because the boss lays it out, usually after some initial discussion. Once Ruff buys into the team concepts usually after breaking training camp, he's along for the ride. For a guy used to being able to say whatever he wants, he now has to follow the company line laid out by double mint. Considering the numerous coaching gaffes committed last season, I'd expect more of the same, some of which will piss Ruff off, and he will bite his lip. All part of being a assistant.

Ruff doesn't make gaffes? Why bite his lip? Does AV rule with an iron fist??

Why doesn't anyone see it as having another great head coach who might catch the gaffe, and say something about it?... you know, work together....

Why is it assumed they'll buck heads?

not before mine - I still rank this as the worst trade the Rangers ever made. Park was a beast - probably the # 2 d-man in the league to Orr for several years and actually was excellent in his own end as well. I have several friends who say he's as good as Orr was for that reason alone. Ratelle was largely under-appreciated as a Ranger but centered Gilbert for several years. He was certainly appreciated in Boston.

Both continued to excel as Bruins - Park was runner-up for Norris several times including 2 or 3 times as a Bruin. Ratelle average over a point a game in 5 1/2 years with the Bruins even though he was 35 when traded.

As for Espo and Vadnais - lets just say it was one of many trades the Rangers would make for players on the decline

Because gaffes happen otherwise there wouldn't be a gaffe. When genius throws Holden, Staal and Glass on the ice to close out a one goal game and the Rangers get scored on Ruff will bite his lip, because he's a company man. Inwardly I'm sure he will be saying what a moron. Just like 90% of this board did.
Assistants don't butt heads with head coaches, or they become ex assistants. Ruff will do his job well, I have no doubt about that. But if double mint asks for his opinion he's going to get it.

Getting his opinion and acting on it are two different things. I suspect Ruff will be neutered the same way Beuk was.

Staal and Holden.... isn't that the defense coach? Maybe that's why Buek got canned?

Quick to blame AV for that, and ultimately it's on him, I guess... but the D pairs are usually controlled by the defense coach... Ruff likely won't make that gaffe.

The buck stops with the coach. Spare me the bull that double mint is not telling the coaches in that situation who HE wants on the ice. Or did you forget HE forgot about Smith.
