They liked him. He played really well here. Tons of players who excelled after a change of scenery. I fully expect him to be a solid # 4 dman here.

We'll disagree on this one. No issues there. All good.

R ! How's the fishing?

I am home for a couple weeks got some mechanical chores need doing. We got Christina lake warmest inland lake in BC 20 minutes down the road. It's beach, swimming, scoping time in between the wrench jobs.

I doubt Detroit offers him a solid deal if they didn't like him. I can also list tons of players in all sports to excel with a change of scenery. Smith did that with us last season during his time here. Will it continue, don't know cannot see the future, but I expect he will be a solid 4th dman for us. We'll see.

We'll disagree on this one. No issues there. All good.

And tons crap the bed with a change in scenery.

Absolutely. If any of us can see the future we'd all be very rich. He could crap the bed. I happen to think he'll be a solid # 4 dman for us like he was once he came here. We'll see.

Girardi was used as a top pair defenseman here and Staal 2nd pair. What does that tell you?

I am not sure exactly what you are getting at to be honest.

Utilization is not a direct indication of ability. Girardi (bad) was #2. Staal (bad) was second pair. They played on those pairs because AV kept trotting them out there (erroneously).

Shattenkirk in Washington in the playoffs was a third pair defenseman. This is an effect of pair balancing and utilization, not a direct indication of ability.

As for Brendan Smith, I think we all agree he's not a top pair guy. He played both second and third pair for the Wings this past year, and there is a level of speculation here but, they recognized fairly early on that they were not a playoff team, he was a UFA, and there were young defensemen in their system they wanted to develop and have more ice time. (Ouellet, Sproul, Jensen) So yes, at various times they'd give the kids the ice time, versus an impeding UFA departure. This is also something I wish the Rangers did more of, however that is a separate discussion.

In his time here he was a serviceable second pair defenseman, and I don't see an immediate reason why he shouldn't be pencilled in to that slot unless his play slips.

Short sample size but the numbers he put up in his time with the Rangers justify the position as well. Not scoring numbers, but shot generation, shot quality, and shot suppression.

Klein was in a similar situation when traded here. He was getting pushed down the lineup by youngsters and more talented defensemen (at the time they had Seth Jones, Shea Weber, Ryan Ellis, PLUS Klein on the right side) and finding his ice time squeezed. He often played third pair for Nashville but it was due to their embarrassment of riches on the right side. IIRC he played the third pair with John Moore starting out, until Stralman left and he moved up to second pair full time for the next 2+ seasons.

Klein only played 3 seasons here but he was one of the underrated pieces of the 2014 Cup run. Arguably more important than Mama St Louis.
