If the Rangers add a good solid top 9 C/winger I will be fine with having Desharnais as my 4th line C/depth forward. If we add no one and expect him to be in the top 9 mix, then yeah I have a big issue with Gorton thinking that is good enough.

If he plays the role I think he will, I think it is fine and I am not going to be bothered by us signing him in that 4th line mix. Depth is good, and with Fast and Desh and maybe Grabner slides down and maybe Andersson is in that mix also, I like that depth.

Our opponents like it to.

I bet they do since they wish they could have 4 line depth like that. We agree.

Ah but we don't. Our opponents will like playing against that lineup all day.

I'm not sure which free agent center would have been a better option.

Other teams may be licking their chops to go against Deshernais as our 4th line center... idk... but he's been good enough to score 40+pts a season fairly consistently in the NHL. Last year he was injured and traded.... but his best season he put up 60 pts.

I don't expect that, but Oscar Lindberg hasn't put up 60 points in 134 career games, let alone an 82 game season.... last year Oscar had 20 points....

That said, I still think Andersson has a shot

I will take a 4th line mix of Andersson and Grabner and Deshar and Fast over most 4th lines in the NHL. Double so with Hank in goal. Triple so with a D that starts with McDonagh/Shatt AND Skjei/Smith.

Well said rob. As a 4th line C he is solid. Can put up 10 + goals and 30 + points I think. And I also fully trust Gorton, so if he is good (assuming 4th line) so am I.

Comparing little D's production playing with Pacioretty, on the first line, and no less than second line while in Montreal, with Oscar on the fourth line is silly. Keep it real. When Julien got there one look and get him out of here. Edmonton took a look and didn't want him, now he's a Ranger. He's 30 and can't play a fourth line role. Same old, same old.

What is the 4th line role on this team?

It hasn't been a checking line in a while. This team wants to roll 4 lines that can score. It wants guys who can play up and down the lineup....

Grabner Desharnais Fast

Edmonton has plenty of depth at center

McDavid
Nugent-Hopkins
Draisaitl
Caggiula
Letestu

They traded for Desharnais last year though because fhey needed help on faceoffs, and apparently he'd decent at them, too...

He will not help. Edmontons depth at center was a issue. It's why they traded for him. Draisaitl and Caggiula spent a lot of time on the wing. He was handed the third center spot, He didn't help, they let him walk. He's 30 And did his fair share playing on Montreals First and second line to make sure they were mediocre. He will help the Rangers do the same.

One year, one million dollar deal. Not a big deal. IMO it's a hedge against Andersson not being ready. If he's not ready, Desharnais plays 4C. If he is ready, Rangers get to play him and it looks good to have your first round pick in the lineup every night. I think this is one of the reasons the Rangers took Andersson at 7 which some considered a bit of a reach - they took the safe pick because they had just given up Stepan and knew they would need a replacement sooner rather than later. They are gambling that Andersson will be ready this year or the next. If he's not then you have a problem.

With the losses of Step and Lindberg we need more depth at center, and I don't mean moving Miller over because that would just decrease depth on wing. rosters are pretty much set at this point due to cap planning, the best we can hope for is another signing of another bottom 6 and hope Hayes and Zib are ready for 1/2. Then there is also the issue of needing depth in case of injury. If hayes or Zib get injured we are in a world of hurt.

Agree 100%. I used those exact words, hedge in case an 18-year old isn't ready for the NHL from day one. Agree, not a big deal either way really.

As for C, read there was talk of a Holden + FOR Bozak deal with the Leafs. That's the kind of deal we need. Bozak great on face-offs also. If we can ship Holden and a mid-prospect/pick for Bozak I'd do that.

I don't think we are done. Trades in the NHL will happen over the next week or two I think until shop is closed for the summer.

An out of the box idea.

Dynamo Moscow has basically been dissolved by the KHL due to ongoing debt and mismanagement problems. All have been released from their KHL contracts and are now unrestricted free agents.

http://en.khl.ru/news/2017/07/05/350136.html

Wonder if there's a center there that, in the midst of all the turmoil, would be willing to come to NY for a year? Wouldn't be much riskier than promoting a kid. At worst give him a KHL out clause so he can go back to mother russia if it doesn't work out.

And how did gooning it up work out for Julien? Oh look they had no scoring depth and got knocked out in the first round with his goalie giving up less than 2 goals a game. It's center depth that can be buried in the minors if needed. Not what I was looking for either but worth a million of Dolan's money for a look.

How about Evander Kane? He's listed as a left wing, but I believe he has played center. Buffalo was rumored to be looking to trade him, maybe Gorton can put a package together starting with Holden. Kane is only 25, big, fast, physical.....Sounds like what the Rangers need, if he's grown up that is.

Well, he's not and probably will never be, that's kinda why he's available, no? Not sure he's a worthy gamble any longer. On top of the perceived maturity issues he sure seems very injury prone. And you don't want him playing center--there's not a player in the league better at winning puck battles along the boards and creating plays off of that. Unfortunately his plusses are getting outweighed by his minuses at this point.

Not a big fan (no pun intended) of Desharnais, but he is more or less a Pirri replacement with more upside so whatever.

Been watching some video of Desharnais from the last couple of years. Goes to the net quite a bit, not afraid to play in traffic. Also has a blast of a slapshot. I'll reserve judgement especially since he's a little guy, those little guys that make the league make it for a reason.

Yeah, I guess part of my surprise on his side, was that he didn't appear small on the ice with the way he played. Hopefully he can find some form for the NYR

I will take a 4th line mix of Andersson and Grabner and Deshar and Fast over most 4th lines in the NHL. Double so with Hank in goal. Triple so with a D that starts with McDonagh/Shatt AND Skjei/Smith.

That 4th line is cute. Doesn't do what a 4th line is supposed to do. But it's cute.

I don't know, in the NHL today 4th lines with more skill than grit are kind of being more common. Either way I won't sweat 1 mill for a 4th line depth player. Let's see what Gorton does to finish the team, then I'll judge. Hard to say too many negative things up to this point in my opinion.

The two-time defending Cup champs traded to get Ryan Reaves for their 4th line. Not known for his skill. The Rangers grab Desharnais at 5' 7", 150 pounds, for their 4th line. To play with Fast.

The AV nightmare continues ...

They did. I don't think he was on their team when they won those cups though. And I also don't think that means that's the only way. A lot of teams have gone more skilled on the 4th line. You are entitled to your opinion of course.

If the signing of a 4th line C/depth player for one year equals the nightmare continues for you, all good. I'll see how the team shapes up and go from there.

If the expectation is Deshar is in the top 9, yeah I have a big issue with that. Guess we'll see how it works out.

If the Pens think that they can win a 3rd Cup with Reaves on their roster, then I'm more likely to have faith in their thinking as opposed to anyone else's.

We can always just wait and see, but there's no fun in that. Besides, I think we've seen what happens with this coach and his philosophy, and how he uses players. We've seen a good body of work so far, not much need to wait and see.

That's fair, we'll see what the Pens do. Maybe they win a 3rd cup and maybe not. I don't think that would be a referendum on adding Reaves either way though, win or lose.

I do hear you, but to me it is a whatever situation if used in the right role. Big picture not something that really will decide where this team goes next season. There are a lot of other things I will be focused on before I focus on a 4th line C/depth player like Deshar. I mentioned a few in the other thread.
