From what I saw and what others are saying, Ronning was our best player. Fontaine played well too, but took 6 minutes in penalties in the third which almost cost them. Andersson was always in the right position and played well on the PK. I liked Crawley too. Has a lot of speed.

Leedahl's name ends in AHL. Pun intended.

Was it you? Is Fontaine gonna be our Captain this year? I must be honest...I don't know anything about him or Boo either...Except Boo being around for a while now.

Boo gets talked about for 2 reasons. One he'll be trying for the 4th line center position. Nobody claims he's going to be anything. It's just a fact that he'll be given a shot. The second reason he gets talked about is because it pisses you off. You're just so predictable. I know it annoys you so I bring him up. I tell you I literally know nothing about our prospects and don't care to. But if the mere mention of his name is capable of getting you going I'll do it. Any other prospects you don't like? I can predict their eventual roster spot as well.

I've only been able to catch part of each game so far and failed to record either one, so boo on me. However I will say that short tournaments like this are difficult to make judgements on. A bad tournament doesn't mean a bad player, but is certainly not a step in the right direction. Of course you ideally want guys to step up in as many situations as possible and set themselves apart from the pack.

I'm not dismissing anyone here since most of these guys are not even pros, but my initial observations, from parts of 2 games only...

Gettinger - plays hard, skates fast, decent skill. Keep an eye on this one.
Day - has had flashes of brilliance with the puck, been ok otherwise.
Crawley - has played surprisingly well. There may be more here than initially thought. He's a NJ kid too
Fontaine - good puck sense, not afraid to shoot the puck and get it on goal.
Andersson - hasn't taken over the tournament but has been smart and consistent throughout. Very good at making space for himself which will be crucial in making the jump from Euro rink to NHL rink.
Carbonara - is and invitee and probably playing for an AHL contract... but I will say he has been surprisingly good at this level. Outplayed a number of much more highly touted prospects.
Pionk - has looked pretty good, nothing spectacular but no problems.
Bereglazov - I was very disappointed in his play. Everyone here knows I'm not the one that buys into russian stereotypes but Bereglazov's play has been very stereotypical - lazy, disinterested. Don't know if he thinks this is a throwaway tournament or if he feels he's above this - or maybe he had a couple of bad shifts, but was not very good. Played better in the first game than the second.
Gropp - actually used his size pretty well. I don't think he dominates the AHL next year but the jump in level is going to be a change for him, he's going to be playing against bigger and stronger guys. He definitely needs to take the next step next year but was not disappointed. Skates well, battles well against the boards.
Ronning - played very well. The knock on him is always going to be size, and he reminds me of Ryan Bourque in that regard.

Nell played pretty well in his start, but his defense didn't hang him out to dry very much. Georgiev could have played better, but not as bad as a 4-0 score would initially indicate. Defense quit on him a couple of times at least.

Suprised he's not on here babbling about Fontaine's -2. Must be grounded.

Boo is an awful prospect who pretty much has no NHL talent. Only hope he would ever have of making the NHL is if he cold win 55% of his draws. However, since from what I've seen he has almost no work ethic, I doubt that will happen.

AV: "Listen Boo, you've had a good training camp. We really like your game, but management and I decided that you're probably best suited to continuing to develop your game in Hartford. We're looking forward to your hard work and we know we'll see you up here soon"

Nieves looks disappointed, but leans in with a determined look.

Nieves: "What if I told you, I could win an additional 5 faceoffs in a 6 game stretch, and raise my FO% to FIFTY-FIVE PERCENT."

Nieves leans back confidently. A hush falls over the room.

AV, to Ruff: Tell Andersson to pack his bags.

Most of the first period spent in our own zone. Our goalie looks steady....and Gropp had a nice power move.

Go to NHL.com and you can see the game.

Forwards are playing soft and slow. They are not hard on the puck at all. Very tentative.

It's typical pre season hockey. I watched the third til the wings empty netter. Liked Pionk, Crowley and Gropp had a moment or two. You have to watch these kids more than a couple games to get a decent read. The obvious things skating and shooting and passing are evident when players get a chance to use them. That's why scouts watch and watch to see the players in different situations and how they handle different opportunities.
For example you could watch Gettinger for three games, he plays steady but doesn't do anything out of the ordinary then gets a shot from between the dots and blows the goalie over and you give him a wow.
It's Very hard for these kids to show what they can do in these types of games, following a game plan as laid down by the coach. You can bet Ranger brass are monitoring their adherence to the game plan as well as personal performance. Big part of playing in the NHL is players producing within that structured system.

You can't really determine NHL readiness from a tournament like this. What you can determine is how far along they are, versus their peers. Based on that alone and 3 games I'll say Andersson was very good, Pionk was steady, Gropp was better than expected, Ronning and day are oozing talent. Also really like Gettinger, Crawley was also better than expected.

On the down side there were a bunch of guys that looked passive and somewhat lazy. Time will tell if this was just a bad tournament or if they tend to take games off.

Carbonara throws 'em pretty good with both hands. Hope the kid finds his way to the big club some day. Soon.
