The Rangers will retire Jean Ratelle’s No. 19 jersey in an on-ice ceremony before their game against the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday, Feb. 25 at Madison Square Garden, the team announced Monday.

“Jean Ratelle is truly one of the greatest players to have ever played for the New York Rangers,” Rangers president Glen Sather said in a statement. “Few players have demonstrated the class, dignity and gracefulness that Jean possessed throughout his career, both on and off the ice. I had the good fortune to call Jean a teammate with the Rangers, I am proud to still call Jean a friend, and I am honored to announce that he will take his rightful place in the rafters of Madison Square Garden.”

Ratelle spent parts of 16 seasons with the Rangers from 1960 to 1975 before finishing his 21-year career with the Bruins. He recorded 817 of his 1,267 career points with the Rangers. Ratelle ranks second in goals (336), third in assists (481) and third in points in Rangers’ franchise history.

I was wondering how many points he scored in Boston....so 450 points in 5 seasons. Talk about prolific.

Just looked it up....how is it they decide to retire his jersey before a Sunday night crown against Detroit? Why not against Boston (who, as it turns out, are in town a week or so before).

I remember the first time I set foot in the old Maple Leaf Gardens back in 1997....I was in awe of all the history displayed ... there were pictures and displays with storyboards everywhere...hell, they even had Harold Ballard pic and displays -- and that man did more to destroy that franchise than Sather and Dolan combined.

Its an absolute tragedy...The old arenas are what made the NHL special...they told stories...were unique and had history....Now every arena is "meet the "jetsons"
Same thing in all sports...Once they build a new place...its over....Old Yankee stadium...Shea Stadium were electric.... not any more
Hell... when I started to go to Ranger games as a teen...up in the blues...People smoke cigarettes up there...I thought that was awesome!

I remember the old garden on 50th Street...used to go to every Red Wing game (even though Giacomin was #1, I was obsessed with Roger Crozier). While it had character, there was nothing depicting the Rangers' history.

My dad and uncles had season tickets in the blueseats... But he would smoke joints up there. Not only did no one care, but above his seat were the rafters... he would put his roaches in the rafters, and they stayed there all season.... or until whenever he felt like reaching up for one...

My favorite story is the one about him going all the way down to ice level, past the security to try and find the locker room to deliver a message between periods... some kind of coaching advice involving putting certain players out against an Islanders unit.....

HAD to tell em, so he walked as far as he could down the hallway before getting stopped by none other than Espo!

JD tried to rat him out to security, but Espo got my dad to an elevator to make a safe escape.

This honor is taking place MANY years too late. Very few in this organization truly deserve to have their sweaters retired. It's about time for Jean!!

Rangers suck at this...hence 30 years later Ratelle goes up...."Truly deserve" You can make the argument Messier played for 12 years and won 5 SC with the Oil...He is an Oiler....not a Ranger...Mike Richter got us 94...but Mess gets all the credit. The Rangers were Graves 3rd team...He was a great person for us...but retire a Jersey? with Ratelle not up?....and Bathgates 9 should of gone up a very long time ago...a dual retiring of numbers is an embarrassment. I feel Greschner truly deserves it.

totally agree with the Bathgate assessment. I'd have no problem with Greschner's #4 being retired

If Messier deserves it, so does Dave Kerr....after all, he was the last Cup winning goalie before Richter....then again, why is it NO ONE from the previous Cup winners are up there....'40 team had 6 players currently in the HOF.

With the newly instituted pricing tiers, you've hit the bulls eye....Rangers have discovered another cash cow.

Moose was a great captain here although I felt he retired 3 years too late. Does he deserve the honor? Hmmm, maybe. I took a lot of heat at the old NYRs site for constantly harping on Mess. He is one of my all time favorites, no matter what sweater he wore. He overstayed his second tour of duty and it cost the team dearly. 7yrs of no post season play trying to build a team around him.

Spot on...

The point isn't that Messier doesn't deserve to be up there... of course he does!

The point is that when he won The Cup in NY at The Garden, everyone should have been looking up at #1 #3 #7 #9 #19 already.... maybe some others, too....

No wonder we were cursed...

Messier was a hired gun who delivered in spades. Anything done after the fact did not help his sweater going up. Did he hang around to long collecting a cheque? Yes but it's also on the Rangers for expecting a guy in the checkout line to deliver.
I can't think of any players traded for, entering a situation like Messier who delivered as the focal player like he did. I get a little tired sometimes of the hoopla, but he literally immortalized himself as a Ranger delivering that cup.
There's been talk on here about the Ratelle trade which brought Esposito back, who almost immortalized himself as a Ranger leading the Rangers to the Cup final in 1979. IMO the Rangers win and he's a New York legend. Say what you will Espo was incredible during that run.
