Some observations from the game:
1) these young defensemen are ready and willing and able to fire shots from the point. No weak wristers like we see from Staal, Holden, Smith and most of the time, Girardi. Plenty of chances to get rebound goals IF the forwards go to the front of the net.
2) for the most part, these same defensemen look pretty small out there. Pionk and DeAngelo particularly need to beef up a bit. I know Karlsson and Letang are pretty small guys but these guys aren't those guys, if you know what I mean.
3) Holden had the least time on ice of all defensemen in the game. I know that doesn't mean much because it's the others that the staff needs to see more but McD led in minutes with Pionk and DeAngelo close behind.
4) Andersson looked better in this game than in a rookie tournament. He was physical, moved the puck well and good in the faceoff circle. Need to see more but I can live with this guy over some of the older guys brought in.
5). Don't think there's a chance in hell of Farnham sticking around. Under 10 minutes in a pre-season game doesn't translate to a roster spot. Was also very unimpressed with Desjardins, though much of his TOI was on the PK.
6) Of the guys who are more obviously veterans brought in for Hartford depth, Paul Carey stuck out more than the others. No chance he, Schneider or Fontaine make the Ranger roster but maybe they make Hartford at least watchable this season
7) final observation - what's with how Sam Rosen pronounces "Nieves"? Have we all been saying it wrong all these years?

Agree with pretty much all of these. Of the young defensemen they all played pretty much the way I expected. Deangelo - loads of talent, good with the puck, had a couple of defensive lapses. Pionk, pretty solid two way defenseman. Graves, skating is still a huge concern for me. There were a couple of times where he got caught and he's laboring, skating forwards, back to his defensive zone. If his skating doesn't improve, his positioning and anticipation need to be better. Had the exact same criticisms of Sauer when he first came up too - he adjusted to the NHL game after a rocky start so Graves still may, he's just not there yet.

Andersson did look better than at TC - like I said in the TC thread it can be difficult to stand out in a rookie tournament if you're playing with rookie talent, against rookie talent. Andersson got to play with much better talent and it showed. I am not convinced he is ready for the NHL but it was at least a positive step after TC. Nieves also looked OK - not great but could probably hold his own in a fourth line spot. I don't think Nieves has much more potential than that, Andersson however does have a lot more upside. Tough call here at this point.

Farnham, i believe, was brought in as the lightning rod, with no expectation of giving him an NHL job. In preseason, you're playing against guys who are trying to get their name out there, so they're going to start sh!t. Better they have a Farnham out there, who will gladly reciprocate, than risk injuring a prospect or a regular. It's not about deterrence, but if he's out there and he's the focus of the other team, they are much less likely to mix it up with someone we actually value. Desjardins - is not going to win a job. That much is clear.

Paul Carey was the one guy that stood out to me too - he's a good AHLer and won't get an NHL job, but it's good to know he could be acceptable in an injury callup role if necessary. Fontaine played well too, he's earlier in his development so he definitely needs to cook in Hartford.

Ho Sang has so much talent. It must be incredibly frustrating to see him continually lose the puck or not use his teammates and be the one man show.

I may be in the minority here but I'll take a senile Sam Rosen over almost anyone else for calling Rangers games. He's been all I remember since I started following the team in the mid-late 80s.

Any thoughts on JT Miller at center? Work in progress at the NHL level to be a third line center I suppose. Do we have anything we could deal to get a legit top line center?

Graves was by far the best defenseman on the ice. He actually has the size to take a hit where DeAngelo and Pionk were getting knocked around despite good puck movement. Fontaine was excellent. Nieves was awful as I anticipated. He's a career minor league, 4th liner.

Was thinking the same thing about DeAngelo. He's an amazing skater. Get's knocked off the puck for D too easily. I pretty surprised nobody has tried to make him a forward yet. Would love to see him up front with Grabner on the wing.

Hard to saw after that game last night, very little flow with almost 26 minutes of man advantage in the game, and irregular line-ups on both sides. I'm not excited about Miller at center, but it may be the best of a bunch of bad options at this point. Desjardins wasn't very impressive considering he's playing for a contract and playing against weakened opposition, thought both Schneider and Carey looked more impressive, and that's not saying that I'm in love with those guys.

I don't see that happening, but yeah he's not the strongest guy on defense. I will say that he looked pretty good offensively, and handling the puck, but not sure he's overall much of an upgrade over Holden. Pionk for my mind looks even smaller, and while he looks good with his positioning and his stick work, I can't see him being able to stop a forward who wants to go to the net.

As for Nieves, I guess I thought he was good enough last night to get a longer look. He's got good size and skating, and I still think he's in the mix for a spot on the fourth line.

Defense isn't aleays put a guy on his ass though, being in the right position to break up a pass, or tying up a stick, is enough to prevent a scoring opportunity. If a player can do that, and is also big, then all the better. And if he contributes more to the offensive side of the ice, than he is deficient in the defensive side, it'll be a net positive.

Needless to say I think the jury is still out on all the young defensemen.

Pionk and Deangelo are very similar - righty, great skaters, good hands and willing to fire the puck. The problem is they both look small. Pionk looks more comfortable on D. The Graves comparison to Sauer is right on target. Graves is a big donkey, I hope he figures it out.

The refs were so off they made the game a mess to watch. My favorite new call of the season is the 2 minutes for the 2nd guy tossed from the face off. It looked stupid when it happened as the second Ranger had just put his skates on the lines when they called the penalty. I saw this happen in the Toronto game, too.

Here is the section from 76.4:
"If a player is ejected from the face-off, his replacement must come into position quickly or risk having the puck dropped by the Linesman without the player being set, or ejected from the face-off by the Linesman resulting in a bench minor penalty for delay of game for a second face-off violation during the same face-off."

Thereby delaying the game even more.

I don't know if they will ever be able to solve the faceoff problem. It's frustrating watching cheaters and delayers, but painful watching penalties like last night.

I understand the intent of the rule but it's too strict as written. They're going to risk swinging the outcome of a game just because a winger didn't get his stick down in time for a faceoff? Punishment doesn't fit the crime. You're making a faceoff violation the equivalent of checking from behind.
