“Nick is safe and dependable,” Vigneault said before the game.

AV should be fired for that sentence alone.

If these two have a good tourney and finish their seasons strong, then they will have taken big strides on becoming contributing Rangers next season. A lot of unrealistic expectations of being on the Rangers were put on these two this summer. They both teased but are both better off where they are. They both have a chance of being real contributors next season.

I don’t agree Mikey, this could all wash out next season with DeAngelo, Andersson, and Chytil playing for the Rangers which is a lot more reasonable scenario. I hear what your saying but think these three need to be written off next year before it’s bad GM’ing.

Brooks added more fuel to the "Fire AV" fire:
Since Michael Grabner joined the Rangers at the start of last season, the Austrian Express leads the club in overall goal-scoring with 44, five more than Chris Kreider, 12 more than Rick Nash, 15 more than J.T. Miller, 18 more than Kevin Hayes, 20 more than Jimmy Vesey and 21 more than Mats Zuccarello. Grabner had played the sixth-most minutes of that group, getting more ice than only Vesey.

At five-on-five, Grabner leads the club with 31 goals, seven more than Kreider, nine more than Hayes, 11 more than Nash, 13 more than Vesey, 15 more than Miller and 18 more than both Zuccarello and Mika Zibanejad. Again, Grabner had the sixth-most minutes of that group, playing more than Nash and Zibanejad.

Grabner is tied for eighth in the NHL in five-on-five goals since the start of last year, trailing Auston Matthews (38), Anders Lee (37), Nikita Kucherov (36), Jeff Skinner (36), Patrick Kane (35), Rickard Rakell (33) and Vladimir Tarasenko (32).

At five-on-five goals per 60 minutes, Grabner is third in the league at 1.41, trailing co-leaders Lee and Matthews at 1.46.

Since pulling on the Blueshirt, Grabner has played a total of 7:21 on the power play.

Yeah, um, 10 of those are empty net goals so keep that in mind while you read Brooks' stats spin. In the same time span Nash has 3, Miller 4, Zucc 2, and Kreider doesn't play in that situation so he has zero.

I don't discount the importance of ENG but failing to mention that when comparing goal totals is a fairly significant omission.

I think there were a lot of unrealistic expectations coming out of camp, and I also think DeAngelo and Chytil "made" the team as much as a PR CYA as anything. I don't deny that they were both certainly on the bubble but Chytil playing in Hartford will be better for his long term development, especially when you consider who the coach is. I actually expected him to go back to Europe after 9 games, but I much prefer the AHL for him - it's closer, geographically and culturally, to the NHL, and the league is a better league. Would be nice to see him as a callup occasionally.

DeAngelo came in as a flawed prospect in my opinion, Hartford is where he needs to be to work out exactly what he is and what he can contribute. Spoiler alert, he's not going to be a stud offensive defenseman in the NHL, i think at this point he should be aiming to be a John Moore type defenseman.

Andersson was the one who was "overhyped" and considered NHL ready, but as a reminder, this was a consensus view, not just a Rangers view. They wanted him to challenge for a 4C spot out of camp, but when they looked at the available options I think they decided to give him another year to round out his game. The kid was 18, jumping to the NHL at age 18 and getting a regular job is incredibly rare, even for a 7th overall pick.

It's important when looking at prospects to take a broader view, and look at how they progress (or stall, or regress) over a 2, 3 year span. As long as these kids continue to build and learn and get better every year, there's no cause for any concern. Of the three, DeAngelo is the one that is closest to an ultimatum year, even so I think that's at least a year, if not 2 or 3, down the road.

To mikey’s point the immediate return on trading the Rangers arguably best center and one of the NHL’s top backup goalies over the last couple of seasons, has had zero impact, leaving most hoping for some nhl roster impact next season. If their contribution is three years down the road it very well could be after Gorton is gone, with this trade being part of the reasoning. One would expect some input from Andersson and or DeAngelo next season or the analysis of this trade will amp up.
A significant part of the trade reasoning was to free up cap space which was used to sign Shattenkirk, and that is another eyebrow raiser in assessing the trade. At this point in time assessing the trade the cap space was better spent on Stepan, DeAngelo has some significant attitude issues and and the focus is going to be on Andersson to make this a win trade for the Rangers.

DeAngelo could do nothing and the Stepan trade was a huge win. He was disgustingly overpaid. He played hard about half the time. He sucked ass on faceoffs his entire career and showed no drive to get better. The rule change has helped him a little this year. He was inconsistent scoring his entire career often disappearing for stretches of 20 games. Andersson is everything Stepan never will be. Just wish they would move DeAngelo to forward.

Lost in your assessment of Stepan is he had value, Gorton got what he got. If the return Andersson and DeAngelo dont produce then it’s a terrible trade. Andersson has it to do to become a dominant all round nhl player, the talk at the draft was a safe pick with a solid two way game in his future. The Rangers could have had Casey Middlestadt with their pick. Instead he went to Buffalo on the next pick. Middlestadt is a incredible offensive hockey player the sort the Rangers don’t get many chances at. He’s one of the players with the higher upside that the Rangers passed on to take the safer pick in Andersson. These kind of trades have a way of showing up on the GM’s resume a few years down the road, and if Andersson isn’t a top six forward soon It could cost Gorton his job, because right now his related dealings have brought Shattenkirk and nothing else. And I expect after the World Junior tournament some talk of how the Rangers could have got Middlestadt will start. He’s got a fantastic set of mitts and a chance to be a true offensively gifted first line center.

Lias is captaining team sweden in the world juniors. Has 5 goals in 3 and a half games along with an assist to lead the team in goals and pts.

He could be on this NYR team now.... he will be next year, if not when Frolunda's season is up

He is the captain, he has 2 goals against Belarus and 2 goals against Switzerland. Both bottom feeders. He’s a meat and potato’s kinda player. Middlestadt is a guy who also plays a strong two way game, and has a easily visible potentially dynamic offensive player, in his future. I’ve watched every game of the tourney including all of Sweden’s. Against Russia a tough opponent Andersson has done very little. He has been very average throughout the preliminary round. Not knocking the kid but it’s obvious he’s still got to pick his game up to be ready for the NHL next season.
And no he could not be on the Rangers this season or he would be.

If things keep going the way they're going, they'll have plenty of chances at high picks in the future.

The Rangers have a tough schedule and will have to be better in the second half to make the playoffs. I don't see that happening either and agree the draft pick fortunes would improve accordingly. . I'm also not selling Andersson short I just don't see offensive upside like Middlestadt has. Andersson is still going to be a player, but more likely filling a three hole. Talk is Middlestadt might sign this off season after only a freshman season in College, and you know Buffalo has to start getting better. So probably some more pressure to sign him. Then Middlestadt walks into a possibility of some ice time with Jack Eichel and that's going to be something to see.
I think the Rangers dropped the ball on this one. Middlestadt and Chytil in the first round would have been a great draft.

The USA has a big game against Russia at 5 eastern on NHL network. A good opportunity to see Middlestadt in action. Excellent competition lots on the line, a real test that gives scouts a lot of info. Russia is always a tough out, USA needs a big game.

Yep totally...Canada vs Swiss is on now....Canada up 6-1 after 2....What is up with the Canada goal song? OMG annoying

Most goals songs suck. Who knows who dreamed it up might have been the organizing committee.

“””””As of Monday morning, the Rangers have allowed (Natural Stat Trick):

The 2nd most shot attempts against at 5 on 5
The most shots on goal against at 5 on 5
The 9th most goals against at 5 on 5
The 2nd most shots on goal against per game, 34.2
In their last four games, the Rangers have allowed at least 32 shots on goal against at 5 on 5. (Natural Stat Trick)

In 18 of the last 19 games, in all situations, the Rangers have allowed between 30 and 47 shots on goal. (Natural Stat Trick)

In the only game of the 19 where the Rangers allowed fewer than 30 shots on goal, they allowed 28. (Natural Stat Trick)

Alain Vigneault said that the Rangers are talking about their process and how they can reduce the shots against.””””””

I am brimming with confidence now that Mr. Tarleck has finally isolated the Rangers problems and they are talking about them. Soon they will come up with a plan, and then more of the same.

Hopefully Eddie will move this beauty into the game day thread. I remember a time when everything stopped when these two teams played. Intense games with unbridled passion and aggression. Sadly now that Gary has converted the NHL into a no hit beer league, intensity, passion and aggression are a no no.
