Oh man...I remember that one. The Rangers didn't even want to play it....we were down 4-1 after the first. I had heard that after Wayne Dillon scored on Eddie in the third, he skated by him and apologized.

But the absolute worst was to come 5 days later...........

Yep....and my fav player at that time, Jean Ratelle.

The Ranger/Boston rivalry at that time was as intense as Rangers/isles was to become....and we all hated getting Espo & Vadnais.

Dan Girardi was a warrior, and might still be here if my favourite coach hadn’t took him away from his strengths, while trying to make him something he wasn’t. I suspect he will be reminding Ranger players tonight he likes to hit and play good old defense. It will be fun seeing the old style Dan back in his comfort zone.

Letting Eddie go made me hate the Rangers for years (I was a 9 year old kid after all) because Eddie was MY guy. He still is.

I listened to that game on my grandmother's Grundig radio. Rooted for the Wings to destroy the Rangers, and had tears in my eyes as I listened to the Garden Faithful.

I forgave the Rangers when Espo brought Eddie back as a coach in '86. My game program and ticket stub from Eddie Giacomin Night is among my most prized possessions.

Injuries really took their toll on him. He was relatively healthy last year and had a resurgence. If he's healthy in Tampa, with the coaching and backliners they have, he will be a steady, valuable player for them.

Agree - I was a freshman in college at the time and had a new friend there who was an even bigger Ranger fan than I was at the time. Mind you, there was no social media and only about half the games were televised but we were freaking out that the Ranger were making these ridiculous trades with the Bruins of all teams.

Espo vs Ratelle was a wash from a statistical standpoint for the years after they were traded, but I think Espo made the Rangers a slower team that stood around more trying to set him up (as if he was still capable of 70+ goals in his mid to late 30s). Ratelle was just what the Bruins needed - a playmaker to complement the collection of power forwards they had on their roster.

The real steal was Park vs Vadnais. Mind you Vadnais did have great statistical seasons in the 2 years prior to the trade, but he was also on the ice with Bobby Orr quite a bit, especially on the PP, so the stats didn't tell the whole truth. Park was perhaps the 2nd or 3rd best d-man in the league at the time of the trade and was also 3 years younger than Vadnais. As it turned out, post trade, Vadnais only scored double digit goals twice as a Ranger while Park did so 6 times as a Bruin and once more as he finished his career with the Wings. Check out Park's season in 1977-78 - he deserved the Norris that year +68 - who does that? The only way Potvin won the Norris was because no one expected the Isles to win their division.

The topper was that at the end of the season they also sent one of their best young players, Rick Middleton as well for Ken Hodge who had little more than a season left in his career. Middleton went on to have 5 40+ goal seasons and 5 90+ point seasons and scored more in 8 separate seasons than Hodge did in his short Ranger career.

Today, there'd be hell to pay in the media, social and otherwise for those blunders

I remember that trade, the Rangers got the best player at the time but Boston won the deal. Esposito had a lot to do with the Rangers getting to the cup final in 79 and a great upset of the Islanders on the way. It helped a little with the trade, but Francis as you mentioned couldn’t leave well enough alone and had to get kicked in the rocks on the Middleton deal. One of the worst if not the he worst trade ever.

The Ranger/Boston rivalry at that time was as intense as Rangers/isles was to become....and we all hated getting Espo & Vadnais.

Park was my favorite player as a kid watching him on tv 9 in NJ. He would have won multiple Norris trophies except for 1 thing and that was Bobby Orr. Awesome Dman. My friend and I were having an argument a couple of weeks ago and he said that "Brad Park couldn't play in today's NHL" and I agreed and said "of course not he is 69 frikken years old"

Yup! Thats what I read earlier. Smith to be scratched after only playing for 38 seconds in the 3rd period of last game. To be replaced by Holden
