Didn't Gretzky get alot of assists back in the day with the Oil while he was on the bench in that 212 pt year?

This is pretty sick, just think about it, if he never scored a single NHL Goal, he would still be the leading point scorer, unreal.

Seriously, I know i dog shattenkirk a little, but, how does he get an assist on Buchs' goal?

He passed to Buch, Buch passed to Zib, then Zib passed to Buch for the goal..They now allow the 1st of 3 passes to be an assist???

Fight the power RJ!

Are the homers at MSG padding points?

Wouldnt doubt it.....they want to do another Rick Nash party with Shatt

I am truly asking.....If anyone knows how that works, can you please explain... Concust you must know?!

Yes it's always worked that way. Well as long as I can remember anyway. The last 2 players to touch the puck before the goal get assists. It doesn't have to be the last 2 touches.

Crediting Assists - When a player scores a goal, an "assist" shall be credited to the player or players (maximum two) who touch the puck prior to the goal scorer provided no defender plays or has control of the puck subsequently. Each "assist" shall count one point in the player’s record. Only one point can be credited to any one player on a goal.

Yeah, Zib and Buch could have played catch 5 more times and Shatt would still get the assist because he got it to them so they could make the play.... making him part of the play. He started it

It's always been like that. Last two players to touch the puck unless it was "disrupted" by an opposing player. Been like that as long as I can remember.

FWIW, the stat that's been documented as receiving a lot of "padding" especially at home, is hits. Keep that in mind when you reference the "hits" stat. Islanders and Flyers were two of the biggest offenders IIRC

I understand it the same way. However the last two to pass the puck were Buch and Zib. Shattenkirks pass was the first of 3 passes.

But Rob and and Rr have pretty good explanations of the rule, I just never realized it worked quite like that.

Side note, flyers don't only pad hit stats, they pipe in crowd noise!

League with an addition of Torts rampage is something to be hooked on to ,especially since fighting or rather players policing themselves on ice is gone forever.

Upon reflection of double mints strategy last game one can only shake his head. He concludes during the third period, he needs his best lineup on the ice so what does he do? Sits Vesey, Carey, and Desharnais. The same Desharnais who has been centering a line, between Zuccarello and Nash. The second line per se.
So he ends up with
Kreider Zibanejad Buchnevich
Nash Miller Zuccarello
Grabner Hayes Fast
Vesey Desharnais Carey all sitting.
Which brings up why doesn't he do it to start with. Desharnais can't carry Millers stick. Double keeps babbling he needs Miller on the wing but where? To replace Buch, Kreider, Nash or Zucc on the top four, nope not needed there. Vesey or Grabner with Hayes? Yes a upgrade but not really needed. The emergence of Buchnevich takes away the need for Miller on the wing to round out the top six, and allows double to use him at center to round out the top six, and start the process of getting rid of the biggest floater and smallest player on the team in one easy move. .

Now if he can just sub Vesey for Fast he will have finally figured it out. And Gorton can get to work finding a fourth line replacement for Desharnais. And he may already be here in Boo. Carey is hanging in there and doing his job and is better on the wing. But he is certainly replaceable if better is out there.
Unfortunately double will screw it up tonight.

You know Smith has to be hoping for them to lose, or he may never see the ice again!

How much and for how long is his contract that we just gave him??

Yeah, I get it now.

The Goalie can stop a puck and leave it for a defensemen, the defensemen and a forward can pass the puck 5 or 6 times between each other until one of them scores a goal, and the goalie would get an assist!

We talk a lot about meaningless stats and inflated stats in here. Assists should be at the top of those two lists.

The Rangers fell in love with the Smith who had a great series against Montreal, and they ignored warning signs he showed ending the season and against Ottawa in the playoffs. They acquired a sketchy third pair guy, paid him second pair money, and have only themselves to blame.

Yeah - soccer only has primary assists - perhaps the one thing better about soccer than hockey.

On the other hand I've seen situations in hockey where the 3rd assist guy did all the work and gets nada for it, so the lesson is that stats are not always fair or telling the whole story.

Assume for a minute that Smith is overpaid and has played horribly. i won't argue either one of those at this point.

Do you still contend that the Rangers are a better team with Kampfer than they are with Smith? Is 3 straight games scratched (and I think 5 total for the season) enough press box time for Smith to "work it out?"

My criticism of this move (or rather, non-move) is that Kampfer has been at least as bad in the last few games as Smith was earlier in the season, but since that poor play was masked by wins, AV can say "well we're winning so I'm sticking with the same lineup" which is lazy, and dumb, coaching.

C

Kampfer has not been glaringly bad like Smith who when he’s bad, he takes it to quite a level. . When Smiths good he’s just a third pair guy, just like Kampfer who is a barely adequate third pair guy. The fact the bonehead coach puts Smith with McD is more of a reflection of his coaching abilities than keeping a winning lineup together. And it’s not lazy or dumb coaching to keep a guy who was as bad as Smith out of the lineup while they are winning. It would look far dumber if he put Smith back in and he had one of his nights and the Rangers lost.
Smith is to expensive in a cap world for his role. As long as Smith is back there he is one thought away from a blunder. He is just not a Smart hockey player. Smith has been inconsistent his entire career, and has shown that over and over. If I had my druthers I’d like to see Graves who was quietly steady during training camp given a chance to put his solid defensive game to the test.

Smith came in to camp out of shape.... reportedly....

He could be sitting out until he works off his Summer beer and pizza gut, is my guess.

He'll be back in the lineup when he gets in shape, and should play better because of it.

Because I will argue that he was good in the playoffs, and adds a needed edge back there... call it sand paper if you want...

It is stretch to suggest after 16 games, exhibition season and training camp Smith is still out of shape, and he is being whipped into shape as he sits out the last few games. I don’t buy that. I’ll buy your ribeye but not that.
I've mentioned he was good against Montreal not so good against Ottawa in last seasons playoffs. He's inconsistent.
Smiths play has put him where he is. Others playing ahead of him may or may not have the raw ability to be better than him or might not. But they are playing better and getting wins. Wins they desperately need. Its not like the players have a high bar to set to be better than Smith. Double mint is probably the only coach dumb enough to break up a winning lineup for a sideways lineup change. Its a marathon not a sprint, when your winning its status quo. Its not like he is guaranteed to come in and outplay anyone in the lineup now. He will get his chance to redeem himself, and he better be ready. I don’t agree with much old double mint does, but there’s no harm waiting for a loss to put a guy back in who hasn’t outplayed anybody playing now.

You know Smith has to be hoping for them to lose, or he may never see the ice again!

How much and for how long is his contract that we just gave him??

The Rangers fell in love with the Smith who had a great series against Montreal, and they ignored warning signs he showed ending the season and against Ottawa in the playoffs. They acquired a sketchy third pair guy, paid him second pair money, and have only themselves to blame.

NO! I agree with you 100%

Seriously, I know i dog shattenkirk a little, but, how does he get an assist on Buchs' goal?

He passed to Buch, Buch passed to Zib, then Zib passed to Buch for the goal..They now allow the 1st of 3 passes to be an assist???

It's always been that way. As long as the other team doesn't get possession

Yeah - soccer only has primary assists - perhaps the one thing better about soccer than hockey.

On the other hand I've seen situations in hockey where the 3rd assist guy did all the work and gets nada for it, so the lesson is that stats are not always fair or telling the whole story.

Interesting that the NHL started with only one assist. Changed it around 1931.
