The 26.6 Million Dollar work in progress...are you F$%^ng kidding me...

Alain Vigneault said right before the Winter Classic that Kevin Shattenkirk's season has been a work in progress and that "there is no doubt" that expectations on both sides are higher than what has been shown.

Vigneault said that Shattenkirk knows the areas where he needs to improve and is accountable regarding his performance

*October: 2 goals, 8 assists, 21:27 per game in 13 games
*November: 3 goals, 5 assists, 20:42 per game in 12 games.
*December: 4 assists, 18:48 per game in 13 games
*January: 1 assist, 21:10 per game in 4 games

and from the ever brilliant Adam Rotter: It's been up and down for Shattenkirk in his first season, so far, with the Rangers. The Rangers knew what they were getting with Shattenkirk so I don't think they are surprised with some of his struggles defensively

amazing how he lost the ability to play the game after leaving St. Louis last year.

He sucks because the system sucks. There is a reason why Girardi who you all called a piece of trash is now solid again with Tampa. The problem isn't Shattenkirk. It's the dumbass coaching this team.

You're right to an extent. AV sucks and his defensive system sucks, but Shattenkirk wasn't too good with the Caps either!!

He'll never be great defensively but moron AV can't get it thru his thick head that you need to put stay at home defenseman with offensive defenseman and actually play a system where it isn't run and gun all the time.

Have to agree that the NYRs D troubles looks more on the system than personnel. Not that the personnel is top-flight but do not think they're naturally turnover prone. It would be terrific to make %99 accurate passes in 1/2 second of puck acquisition but not plausible. Those touch passes to nobody in critical areas really or blind bang around the boards to the opposition point-man do appear to be a result of the system.
If what we see is the true instincts of the personnel then they just plain SUCK.
Run and Gun for the sake of Run and Gun gives way to the firing squad the King is facing.

I wouldn't go as far as "solid" but he's certainly better than Holden and Kampfer this year.

All defensemen are healthy right now and they're playing Kampfer, a marginal replacement level player, Holden on the top pair, and after a decent start Staal has regressed of late also.

Why are they not calling up Gilmour or Graves? Deangelo has not warranted a callup but to be perfectly honest I'd rather see him in there than Kampfer, for the sheer fact that he has potential to turn into something better. Kampfer was and will always be a black ace type defenseman. You can use him in a pinch but not a long term solution. Holden can keep a regular spot but can't hold his own on the first pair. Staal is the same way.

Smith is in the doghouse again, and while many will say "I told you so" about his signing, truth is he's better than Kampfer, and arguably Holden also.

I don't see why at this point, they are still giving valuable ice time to Kampfer rather than investing in their own future - Gilmour? Graves? Pionk? Crawley? Deangelo? What's the point of having these guys if you're just going to play Steven Kampfer. Are they so terrible in the AHL that they can't outplay Kampfer? If that's the case then honestly, burn the whole franchise down and start over.

Graves was excellent in the pre-season. It's a joke he's not up here. Thank God they drafted Andersson because he's what this team is lacking big time all over the roster. Fontaine is going to be a heck of a role player for this team. He's like Fast. Just needs some more AHL experience. Ronning might be a homerun. Kid is a righty shot, did well in his AHL debut last year and is tearing it up this year. The defense obviously needs an over haul. McDonagh from reports has played hurt a lot this year. However, you have to shop him and if you get a massive offer, you need to do the deal. Going forward, you are looking at Skjei, Shattenkirk and Graves. The other three spots need to be re-worked. I'm still convinced a McDonagh deal for a 1 and either Nylander or Marner is there to be made. Toronto's defense sucks ass. They aren't winning crap with what they have back there.

If McDonagh gets you a 1st and Nylander, you do that every day...

The Rangers defense would be hurting big time, though. Would need to draft 2 defenseman in the 1st round to compensate.

If all that happens, then this may be a good young team by the time the Russian goalie gets here to take over for Hank.

Stattenkirk did not lose anything when he left St.Louis... he was a terrible defender from the start.. he benefitted from playing alongside some solid D men in St. Louis. That made him look better. When he went to Washington they had hi 1st for PP.. but 3rd pair in the game.. he is TERRRRRRRIBLE.. and NEVER should have been signed... and that they bailed on Girardi to make room sucks even larger.. sure Girardi was getting worse as he got older.. but his worst game IS Shattnekirks game.... the ONLY difference is he puts more points up.. but he has to given how bad he is on the D.

Add to this Smith who has been inconsistent all year leading to games in the press box.. well there is 10 Million in poor D.... you add Skeji who is still learning is a poor defender and you have three of the top 6 who are lost in their own zone... Hank has not been steller.. but he has been damn good with that D in front.

I thought Nash was a big pay cheque for not much.. Shattenkirk is WAY worse.. Nash is working and trying Shattenkirk looks like he is looking for the pretzel guy half the time...He needs to play in offensive zone face offs and PP mainly and play 3rd pairing after.. OR find a guy who can be SOLID on D so it makes up for him... they do not have that guy.... McDOnaugh needs some help as he is trying too hard to do too much... Staal has never been that great a Dman .. and you have a massive mess between Hank and a group of forwards who cant score..

I have refrained from ever saying this.. but maybe you trade Hank and hope to rebuild... ship him to Chicago .. get crawford back and young forward and a pick maybe... Because if Shattenkirk is onthe team and has no one who can bail him out other than MDZ 2.0 (Skeji) .. there will be more long nights for Hank and the fans
