Rangers (22-15-5, 49 pts) vs. Islanders (21-18-4, 46 pts)
1 pm; Madison Square Garden
MSG Network; ESPN 98.7 FM

The Game

After four days to recharge and refocus during the bye week, the Rangers return to action to take on the Islanders in a Saturday afternoon matchup at Madison Square Garden.

The Blueshirts dropped their last game before the break last Sunday against the Golden Knights in Vegas, 24 hours after topping the Coyotes in a shootout.

Coach Alain Vigneault deployed new lines Friday at practice in attempt to jump start an offense that's scored four goals just once since December 19. Pavel Buchnevich replaced Paul Carey Friday at practice after Buchnevich was a healthy scratch for the game in Vegas, and Vigneault shuffled his other three lines while keeping his defensive pairs the same, meaning Brendan Smith will remain out while Steven Kampfergets the start.

Henrik Lundqvist is expected to man the net for the Rangers after he served as the team's backup in the loss against the Golden Knights.

While he practiced on Friday, Vigneault said Kevin Hayes was at best 50/50 to play Saturday after he left the game in Vegas in the second period due to injury. If he cannot play, Carey would and J.T. Miller would most likely shift to center.

Like the Rangers, the Islanders wrapped up their bye week with practice on Friday. The Islanders snapped a five-game losing streak right before the bye with a shootout victory over the Devils last Sunday.

The Islanders are 3-6-1 in their last 10, and that skid bumped them out of playoff positioning and into last in the Metropolitan Division, tied with the Flyers with 46 points.

John Tavares leads the team with 51 points, followed by Josh Bailey, who is having a career-year with 38 assists and 50 points through 42 games thus far.

Goaltenders Jaroslav Halak and Thomas Greiss have both struggled this season, with both netminders having a plus-3 GAA. Halak has a .904 SV% while Greiss is at .882, while neither have pitched a shutout.

Michael Dal Colle, the Islanders' 2014 first-round pick is slated to make his NHL debut Saturday.

Players to Watch

Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk grew up watching the Rangers battle the Islanders, and said on Friday how excited he was to get another taste of the New York rivalry. The blueliner had had plenty of success against the Islanders in his career, with three goals and 12 points in 10 career games, including a point in seven of his last eight contests in which he's scored all three goals and added eight assists.

While he's having a difficult season, Halak loves facing the Rangers. For his career, Halak is 15-7-0 with a .921 SV % and a 2.58 GAA against the Blueshirts with a pair of shutouts. He has five wins in his last six games against the Rangers, including earlier this season.

Say What?

"It's going to be fun. I feel like the one earlier in the season, we weren't playing our best hockey. We're looking forward to obviously playing - I'm looking forward to playing again in that rivalry and put a better result out there and hopefully gain two points against a divisional opponent." - Kevin Shattenkirk on facing the Islanders

Rangers Lineup Friday at Practice

J.T. Miller - Mika Zibanejad - Mats Zuccarello
Rick Nash - Kevin Hayes - Jesper Fast
Jimmy Vesey - Boo Nieves - Pavel Buchnevich
Michael Grabner - David Desharnais - Vinni Lettieri

Ryan McDonagh - Nick Holden
Brady Skjei - Kevin Shattenkirk
Marc Staal - Steven Kampfer

Inside the Numbers

The Rangers have earned at least one point in 17 of their last 28 games against the Islanders, dating back to Nov. 15, 2011 (13-11-4 record over the span).

Coming off the break, today's game will tell us what this team is made of. No excuses with Kreider and potentially Hayes out. The Islanders are a not a good team. Anything less than a lopsided win on home ice will tell us we are not a good team either.

Rangers will come out flat, get dominated for stretches, get pinned in their zone for entire shifts. They've rarely played well against the Isles at home under AV. They will make a 3rd period surge and perhaps tie the game, only to lose in the shootout.

AV will deliver the standard post-game speech to the press about "the Process" and "good looks" and Henrik playing well. The front office lacked the guts to replace AV with a decent coach to salvage the season. We will watch "AV hockey" for the next 3 months and hear the same old excuses.

Also, Sam and Joe should be in full cackle mode this afternoon after the long break. So much to talk about from the past week. Oh, is that a hockey game down there?

Isles defense is awful. They leave guys open in their zone like crazy. Rangers should get shot opportunities, which they will screw up by passing too much.

Barzal skated through everyone, broke the Rangers defense down, pass to open guy with clear shot from 15 feet away, goal.

The AV “Process” in full effect.

Isles have given up at least 4 goals against per game for two weeks before the break. Rangers may get shutout.

Rangers get these bull**** tripping penalties because they reach with their sticks on defense instead of skating into the opponent and taking the body.

It’s the Process. And it sucks.

Isles are about as bad as the Rangers with their coverage in their defensive zone. All 4 PK’ers in one corner. That’s disgusting.

Every other team in the league takes the body on Barzal. Not the Rangers, they just let him skate around with the puck.
