Rangers (22-16-5, 49 pts) at Penguins (23-19-3, 49 pts)
7:30 pm; PPG Paints Arena
NBCSN; ESPN 98.7 FM

The Game

Several Rangers voiced their pleasure that they would not have to wait long to right the ship following the disappointing result in a 7-2 loss against the Islanders Saturday afternoon at Madison Square Garden.

Following a lopsided loss like that, coach Alain Vigneault could make lineup changes and/or shuffle lines and defensive pairs around. The team was not scheduled to have a morning skate in Pittsburgh, but Vigneault opted to change that to get his team on the ice prior to the 7:30 matchup.

Henrik Lundqvist, who came in in relief of Ondrej Pavelec in the second period, is expected to get the start.

Sunday is the third of four meetings between the Rangers and Penguins, and the second in the Steel City. New York won the previous meeting in Pennsylvania, 4-3, on Dec. 5.
Pittsburgh comes into today's game on a three-game winning streak and with six victories in their last 10 contests, including a 4-1 win Saturday afternoon against Detroit.

The Penguins' offensive trio of Sidney Crosby, Phil Kessel and Evgeni Malkin combined for four goals and five assists in yesterday's win, while Crosby and Malkin have 17 points in the team's last three games.

Kessel leads the team with 50 points, followed by Malkin's 46 and Crosby's 45. All three players have at least 16 goals on the year.

Goaltender Matt Murray is expected to get the start after serving as the team's backup on Saturday. He's 15-12-1 with a 2.93 GAA and a .903 SV% on the year.

Players to Watch

Lundqvist was named to his fourth All-Star game last week in what has been a strong season for No. 30. Sunday he'll face a Penguins team that he's played against more than any team in his NHL career. He's 29-22-11 with a 2.51 GAA and a .913 SV% with four shutouts against Pittsburgh, and he's helped the Rangers earned at least a point in 13 of his last 17 games against the Penguins.

Pittsburgh's Malkin posted two goals and two assists for four points in the team's win over Detroit, which came off the heels of a three-point performance on Jan. 7 before the team went on recess for the bye. No. 71 is one goal shy of hitting the 20-goal mark for the 10th time in his NHL career.

Say What?

""I think we are all going to watch our shifts and figure out exactly where we could have been better on all those odd-man rushes. The beautiful thing about a back-to-back is it's a huge game for us tomorrow and we can put forth a good effort and turn the page on this one." - Rick Nash following Saturday's loss

Inside the Numbers

The Rangers have earned at least one point in 16 of their last 21 games against the Penguins, dating back to Apr. 3, 2013 (10-5-6 record over the span).

Agreed. Team needs an overhaul top to bottom. The only way this will happen is if we lose enough to be way out of the playoffs by the deadline.

I wanted him gone before he was hired. I saw his show in Vancouver and this is a technicolor replay. Luongo saved his ass for so long in Vancouver same as Lundqvist here. He is incapable of coaching a team without a star goalie to cover the multitude of mistakes he allows his players to make, while he sprinkles his angel dust bull**** about his fast break. Whens the last time you saw this team make a fast break out of their end. They have no breakout, its a standing still defenseman looking up ice for a long bomb that works one every 300 times. Get rid of Herb Tarleck.

Conventional thinking says that a team that gets embarrassed at home by a rival will be nasty and angry to start their next game. If the team has ANY heart/guts this should be true. Especially so if the following game is against another rival.

The first 10 minutes tonight will tell us a lot about where this team is and whether this coach still has the players on his side.

I’m not rooting for them to get blown out again. But if they do, then something had better be done NOW, with 3 months left in the season.

He's been whining about how he had his three best players Zibanejad, Zuccarello and are you ready for this Miller against Barzal's line and they got lit up. Which they did. But when did Miller become one of his top three forwards? Most times he's crapping on the guy, and now because it suits his, save my ass spiel, he's one of his top three forwards. Besides that at what point in time does a coach with a clue maybe try changing the matchup? With this dope who doesn't know enough to put a drain plug in a draining tub, never, and as usual he stood there with a stupid look on his face chomping on his gum and did nothing. Fire Herb.

I'll never understand this line of thinking. Wanting the coach to be gone is one thing, but wishing to get blown out is ridiculous and childish. You are actually wanting what you believe to be your favorite team to not only lose...but to get destroyed just so they might fire a coach.

Does getting blown out do anything else for the team? And you want not only him fired, but trade everyone!!! Get so many draft picks....yes, trade all players older than what....maybe 22....so no one gets a long term deal....so this way we can get more and more picks.....get all the picks. And no one gets paid more than like 3 million a year....cause no one should get paid high salaries...this way we can get more and more picks.

Get the ball rolling, and fire AV (which I actually agree needs to happen), trade everyone older than 22, sign no one for more than 3 million a year. Oh yeah, and when a guy you just sign to a free agent contract doesn't perform after 30 games, trade him forrrrrrrrr...hmmm....oh yes, picks! Cause every free agent will want to come here after that.

Regardless of what you want the consequences to be, I can't fathom how a supposed fan wants their so called favorite team to lose. Ridiculous.

Rangers are no longer good enough to take a shot at the Cup...They dont have a 1st line...The D is atrocious...Goaltending is why we are even near a playoff spot. Gorton over paid for Smith...He signed awful Shattenkirk...He traded Stepan and Raanta and got nothing back that we can use today.....AV plays Kampfer too much...Buch and JT end up on the 4th line...Constant line juggling...They dont hit anyone....They are mess in their own end....They have no plan on Offense...It needs to be blown up....If Rangers play great tonight and win, then AV gets cut more slack....NOT what is needed

How does OVERHAUL equate with TRADE ALL THE PLAYERS. Womandar at it again. Not the first time you put words on my posts, but I know I'm not alone.

Hmmm...so we should keep losing....8-0..... every game until he gets axed....brilliant plan.

I guess in the abstract I would root for that to happen, but only if I was told before the game that AV would be fired tonight IF they lost by 5+ goals tonight.

However, since we don't know that for a fact, watching another blowout would be painful. In any event, it shouldn't take another embarrassing loss tonight to get AV fired. He should've been canned right after the Ottawa series.

You cannot blow up the team without firing the coach first. AV's system is not working for this group. It happens. A different voice and system would do wonders. Right now, this team is not good enough to compete with the top teams (or even the middle teams), but trading away players before seeing how they would work with a new coach is not smart.

This.

The Rangers need structure and discipline as well as consistency with the line combos and defensive pairings. They have none of that with Gum-Gum.

Firing AV would be good, but the problem is systemic, and run to the top of management! At the very least , Gorton needs to go. This team has no trajectory or plan. We all saw that with the Stepan trade. He probably envisioned signing Thornton, and got left with his pants down, and has done nothing to balance the lineup. We are subpar at W,C and D, but Gorton does nothing when players become available.

How bout a comprimise, we lose 8-0, Herb gets canned and Miller hangs one on Crosby? Everybody wins.

Deal. No work tomorrow, so I better get the bourbon ready for another episode of The Process starring AV.

I think Pitt is going to come out hard knowing how vulnerable to even a minor forecheck the Rangers are. It could be 8-0 no matter who hopes for what.

I can't blame Gorton. Yet. He's made some good acquisitions, especially with some of the young players coming up. Unfortunately he's allowed AV to influence trades and drafting to fit The Process, which may have set the franchise back 5 years or more. AV lives in some fantasy world where NHL hockey has no physical play at all and the game is played like a no-contact 35+ night league.

The Rangers have no physical presence, no intimidation factor, no way of imposing their will upon an opponent. They have skilled players who skate well make nice passes and Henrik in net. Meanwhile, the rest of the league is about to change into playoff mode where the games are more and more physical. Anaheim-LA had 3 fights in 4 seconds of game time last night. Rivals going at it, and I'm jealous of the fans of those teams. Rangers-Isles had several incidents of harsh language. Maybe. That's AV's impact on this franchise. And it SUCKS.

Yesterday, I had an excuse to bail yearly ... went to the gym after the 2nd. Oh I know, today it is alcohol time! :-)

On Friday I grabbed a bottle of Colonel E.H. Taylor small batch bourbon. If you ever get a chance to grab a bottle of any of the Col. E.H. Taylor whiskeys (single barrel, small batch, straight rye) do it. Simply delicious stuff. I have enough left in the bottle for tonight's game!

Sure you can blame Gorton....you can't just import one or two physical players and expect a problem fixed.....if you don't change the system, the players are just numbers. The GM hasn't asked the coach to change tactics cause they have been a winning team. You bring a GM and coach in who want a different style, you could get there with what we have.

It seems to me that Gorton tries to get players that the coach asks for. Hence the acquisitions of Yandle, Boyle and Shattenkirk. AV and/or Arniel keep asking for a PP QB and Gorton keeps getting them one. After awhile you'd hope that Gorton would realize that it wouldn't matter if he got them Bobby Orr or Paul Coffey.

Bring in a coach that demands physical play and wants a team that hits in all three zones, and I'd wager that Gorton will adjust and get players to fit that style.

I agree....but do you think that if you brought in a coach that demanded a more physical type of play, you would need to make that many changes? I think those type of players are here, but are just being completely mismanaged.

The Rangers have enough guys who can play physical if the coach demands it and has the” how much do you like it here because I want checks finished, if you don’t want to, let me know and I will talk to Gorton about finding you a new address”.
