Rangers (24-18-5, 53 pts) at Kings (24-17-5, 53 pts)
10:30 pm; Staples Center, Los Angeles
MSG Network; ESPN 98.7 FM

The Game

The Rangers look to rebound from a road trip-opening loss Saturday when they head to Los Angeles to battle the Kings Sunday night.

New York fell behind by a pair of goals against the Avalanche, and while Pavel Buchnevich's power play goal midway through the second got the Rangers to within a goal, it was as close as they'd get in a loss that snapped their modest two-game winning streak.

Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves in the loss on Saturday, and with the lack of a morning skate Sunday, it's unknown if Lundqvist will make his fifth straight start Sunday against Los Angeles.

Also unknown is the status of forwards Michael Grabner (flu) and Kevin Hayes (contusion), as well as defenseman Marc Staal (hip flexor). Coach Alain Vigneault did not have an update on Grabner following Saturday's game, and said both Hayes and Staal were 50/50.

The Rangers were victorious in the first meeting between these two teams with a 4-2 win on Dec. 15 at Madison Square Garden.

The Kings enter Sunday on a six-game losing streak and with just two wins in their last 10 contests, most recently a 2-1 loss to Anaheim on Friday night. That slump has Los Angeles on the outside looking in in the Western Conference playoff picture after a strong start.

Anze Kopitar is having a strong season with 18 goals and 47 points through 46 games, putting him just five points shy of his total from a year ago. Dustin Brown is having a renaissance season with 32 points, though he's been held off the scoresheet the last five games.

Like the team as a whole, goaltender Jonathan Quick is struggling with five consecutive losses and just two victories in his last nine starts dating back to Dec. 23.

Players to Watch

Mika Zibanejad has had success as of late against the Kings with a goal and multi-point game in three of his last four games against Los Angeles, and has three goals and five assists in eight career games.

While things haven't been going the Kings' way, captain Anze Kopitar has been a bright spot with assists in back-to-back games and points in six of their last seven games overall.

Inside the Numbers

New York has earned at least one point in each of its last five road games against Los Angeles, dating back to Oct. 7, 2011 (3-0-2 record). In addition, the Blueshirts have posted a 6-2-1-2 record in their last 11 road games against the Kings, dating back to Dec. 14, 2000.

In a preventative shot to the excuse makers blaming the injuries. Here's a team not making excuses. Especially the coach.

What a great photo. When hockey was awesome. You could watch the skill of Dionne, Simmer and Taylor along with the violence of Wells, Korab and Hopkins. So much better than today’s “product”.

Rangers were battered yesterday by a team that was determined to finish every check and not give the Rangers space to handle the puck. The Rangers rarely play well against those teams thanks to AV’s process.

LA has lost 5 in a row and will be in a foul mood. They can play the same style as the Avs did yesterday. If the Kings are on their game to start, this could get ugly.

IMO the Rangers are drawing dead on this road swing. The time change will kick in tonight on a team with one of the best travel situations in the league. Unfortunately they are not conditioned for these types of trips. The next game will be the dreaded tnird in four days. Another night off and then the go home game. If they can’t get something done tonight 0 for 4 looms large.

Would it be possible that some of those injuries were pushed by a players themselves?Like a bit of an embellishment to finish off the coach?

Lettieri has goal scoring ability, he’s on the 4th line. Fast had 3 games where he scored this season, he’s on the 3rd line.
