I think Kovalchuck is in the Rangers plans this summer... Sather loves his Russians... and Tavares is also a guy they would aim at... I think Carlson (NOT KARLSSON) on D and JVR is another that they might add.... again cant add all the cap is the cap.. but it also depends on what they trade at the draft as well.. as the Rangers will have between moving the 5 that left 25 million to spend .. which they also have RFA's Namestnikov (1.97), Hayes 2.6),Spooner(2.8),Vessy (.925) Skeji (.925)OGara (.925)and Gilmour(.742)

Pavlec will get replaced by Georgiev

they will have 2 forwards (Carey, McLeod, and Desharnais) to replace as outgoing players.. one of which COULD be either Kovolchuck or Tavares

give a line up IF no one is traded at the draft... if they are .. who knows what the team looks like.

Zibanejad, Mika 5.3
Kreider, Chris 4.6
Zuccarello, Mats 4.5
Spooner, Ryan (MAYBE 3.5-4) I like him but he may get that in arbitration
Hayes, Kevin (MAYBE 3.2) Not sure he is worth it.. I like him but he may get that in arbitration
Namestnikov, Vladislav (MAYBE 4.5) He will ask for a crapload more then he is making now.
Fast, Jesper 1.85
Buchnevich, Pavel 9.25
Vesey, Jimmy (MAYBE 1.5) Does anyone want to keep him or trade him? Not sure the resigning costs
Holland, Peter .675
Player to be named later COULD be Beleskey
Player to be named later could be Lettieri, Vinni, Chytil, Filip, Andersson, Lias (all .925) or all three depending on

Shattenkirk, Kevin 6.65
Staal, Marc 5.7 (Can they/Should they buy him out?)
O'Gara, Rob (MAYBE 1.2) minimal raise if he is sticking with the team
Skjei, Brady (MAYBE 1.50-2) might be higher but I am not sure
Pionk, Neal .925
Deangelo, Anthony .863
Kampfer, Steven.65
Gilmour, John (MAYBE .925) a bump up but not sure he makes the team out of camp due more to where he is in development and price.

Girardi 3.6 (still owing this and next year then drops to 1.1 the third year. )

Lundqvist, Henrik 8.5
Georgiev, Alexandar .79

Smith, Brendan 4.2 in the minors I think 3.3 towards the cap not sure if he sees the NHL again like Redden
Beleskey, Matt 1.9 in the minors I think .691 towards the cap may make that fourth line slot leaving cash to sign a big name

That D looks terrible and with an aging Hank ... not promissing I would think (and I love Hank and would hate to see him go but he might need to go to make another team better and give the Rangers a shot )

No way Im giving anyone a monster contract at the second half point of their career....Thats how we have been doing it forever and its never worked. Holland, Carey, Cody, DD will not and should not be here....Buying out Staal is too much dead cap space....Let him play or be a 7th....He is a good soldier

Maloney says the Ottawa series pretty much told the management it is time to make a change. The team as it is has no fight in it. And, he said, the Nashville game was the last straw. I can see it, these both points. But, if this is the case, how does the coach get away clean?!?

General manager Jeff Gorton said the picks give the Rangers flexibility and currency.

"We have to look at both scenarios," he said when asked if he would be willing to trade picks for current NHL players.

"We'll look at different positions and see what's available. When you have three first-round picks and you're on the draft floor, opportunity will be there," Gorton said.

That's just obvious. His mission is to rebuild the team as fast as possible. He's stressed the importance of youth, but there's no doubt in my mind that he intends to put together a playoff team next year.

That isn't a contradictory statement.

He also said he wanted close to if not nhl ready prospects back on some of his deals before he started, he’s done that. Hajek, Rykov, Lindgren and Howden are knocking on the door for their opportunity. There was considerable talk Lindgren would be signed this summer, to join Howden and Hajek at next seasons training camp joining Chytil, Andersson and whoever they draft this summer, for a pretty impressive prospect pool. Going to be a young team next year.

He is a battler which the Rangers can use especially with a coach smart enough to value those types of players. He shows some pretty good stuff on the highlights in this link. If he doesn’t get signed and goes back to college I’d bet on him getting more offensive situations and opportunities. From what I’ve read he’s a helluva prospect. Captain of the world junior USA says a lot about his character. Hopefully the Rangers stole one here.

I'll say what I have been saying all week. The Rangers plan to be a solid playoff contending team next season battling for a WC spot. Maybe they fall a little short, but I believe they can be a solid team next season that is in the mix until the end. Then in two years back battling up near the top again with bigger dreams. This will not be some 4 or 5 year rebuild plan. Reboot not rebuild.

Why the Rangers reportedly moved on from JT Miller

11:51AM

Larry Brooks writes that the Rangers had become "convinced" that many of JT Miller's issues were not related to coaching/Alain Vigneault and became "concerned" his work ethic and off-ice prep had "regressed." (NY Post)

Miller, an RFA with arbitration rights, was unlikely to get a long-term deal from the Rangers that would have bought out some of his UFA years. (NY Post)

Miller can be a UFA after next season.

Jeff Gorton said that Tampa Bay had been interested in Miller for some time, a decision was going to have to be made on his future and they felt comfortable including him in the deal based upon what they were getting back.

Adam Rotter: It wasn't long ago that I viewed Miller as nearly untouchable and a big part of the next phase of the Rangers. The disappointing thing with Miller was that this was the first year where you couldn't see real progression in his game. He had taken noticeable steps in each of the previous years and the next step for this season was to fully solidify a spot in the Rangers top-six and become a leader/consistent offensive performer. For whatever reason, going back and forth to center and wing, how the team was performing, or something else, Miller didn't take that next step and was far less noticeable on the ice.

The Rangers took a big risk in moving Miller. He's a former first round pick, has a ton of talent and despite the amount of games he has played, he's still fairly young. That said, the Rangers know Miller better than anyone, have been watching him since before he was 18 and with a very close eye since he was drafted. They know they are taking a risk but they did what they thought was best for the team and we will just have to see how it all plays out.

Skjei was the same way, skates well, coachable, good positional defenseman. When he got here I was expecting zero offense out of him, because for the most part his career at Minnesota was incredibly limited offensively. He had a good year his sophomore season when he played a chunk of the year with Mike Reilly. (I watched 10-15 games of Gophers hockey a year when Skjei was there)

Skjei in the NHL is a different story. He was almost 0.5 PPG last year, his rookie year. This year he's off that pace but still, 20 points in 64 games on a bad team. The reason why is he defends well, and I don't mean that he lays hard hits or clears the crease. He's smart with the puck in the defensive zone, keeps possession of it, and finds a teammate. Smart defensive play beats "warrior" defensemen any day of the week.

Lindgren isn't the type of player who creates offense, but the offense will certainly benefit from his sound defensive play, which should actually contribute to his numbers, in a very similar fashion to what Skjei does night in and night out.

Strange times indeed! The knock on this kid is having absolutely no offensive instincts. After that an NHL sized tenacious physical defender with excellent skating and speed to close gaps. He maybe a defensive defenseman but he is not a plodding caveman!! Give me a bunch three of these guys and let's drop the puck!!!
